"Brookdale Chandler: Unfair Treatment and Overcharging"
We'd give Brookdale Chandler half a star if could. They've been really bad to our family and did everything possible to keep my father in law from living there. This is even after he passed their health check, paid money, and signed their contract. They even gave us keys to a place for him, but then said they didn't know about his health issues like bipolar disorder. They said they couldn't take care of him - they nearly made him lose his home. His doctors and AZ officials said this place could and should take care of people like him. Watch out, they treat patients unfairly and charge too much. The head person, [name removed], keeps saying they can't care for my father in law. He also tries to ask for more money because he says my father in law needs extra care, which isn't true - my father in law's doctors don't agree with the extra care Brookdale says he needs. It just seems like they're making up reasons to keep him out and cause stress.

"Unresolved bullying and unfair costs marred assisted living experience."
The experience wasn't positive. My mom was a resident from to Now, she's back living with me. The main issue was another lady resident who was genuinely unkind to my mom. We raised our concerns to the staff, but their actions, like secluding her at a separate table, just didn't seem right. I believe my mom bore the brunt of it because she seemed to spark jealousy. My mom was an ambassador, known for welcoming new residents and was popular among all. But I had to take her out from there. Adding to our predicament, she moved out on and since she had moved in on, we had to pay up to. I didn't think that was just because her departure wasn't by choice, it was due to the ill-treatment from the mean lady. Everyone was aware of it, but sadly, nothing was done. All in all, it was a disappointingly negative experience.

"Disappointed with Overpriced Assisted Living; Pressure and Fees Disheartening"
I thought the assisted living place charged too much and cared too much about money. The person who talked to us about it pushed us to decide quickly, even though it wasn't right for my dad. He moved out a little while later. I'm really let down by the whole thing. It doesn't seem fair that you have to pay a big fee before you even know if you're going to stay.

"Friendly Community with Great Meals and Activities"
We really like the smaller size of this community. The residents are friendly and made our loved one feel welcome right away. The staff is super friendly, and the director [name removed] has been especially helpful, especially when we had financial problems. He fixed things quickly. Even though our loved one is pretty independent, they still check on him, which we appreciate. He enjoys the meals and dining services and loves all the activities. He really looks forward to going out every day with the other residents to parks and shopping.

"Expensive Assisted Living Facility with Poor Response Time"
Don't pick this place unless you've got a lot of cash. At first, Brookdale made us think we'd pay each month, making it seem cheap. When we moved in, Mom couldn't move much, and we got hit with bill for extra help. They nickel and dime you for everything. Mom asked for one meal in her room, and they charged a lot for it. It's easy to run up big bills here. By the middle of her second month, Mom was moving around on her own, but they still charged us the same, even though she didn't need extra help anymore. She's out now, but we haven't gotten the bill for her last month yet. I'm worried they'll add on more fees. I'm also afraid they'll try to charge us for another month because we didn't give 30 days' notice. There was a Covid outbreak where 9 people got sick. Luckily, no one died or had to go to the hospital, and they were all kept apart. I'm not sure if we got extra charges because Mom had to stay in her room for two weeks and they had to bring things to her. If that's why, it's not fair because it's not her fault they got sick. Mom says they took too long to come when she pushed the button for help. Sometimes, nobody came at all. For such a big place, they need more staff at night. Mom only got one full bath in her 3 months there, even though we paid for lots of extra help. I also heard 5 other people left while we were there because they couldn't afford it. This place costs too much.

"Underwhelming Assisted Living Facility Tour Experience"
The tour guide focused too much on selling. It didn't seem right for my loved one. The place wasn't very clean; carpets needed vacuuming. Not many people were active. They only had window AC units, which are old-fashioned. The rooms were pricey for what they offered, just studios for much more than other 1-bedrooms nearby.

"Decent, but feels like Assisted Living, with limited outings"
The outside of the place was great, but the inside really reminded me of an Assisted living place instead of the more lively Independent living places. Most of the activities seemed to be about playing cards and there were only a few opportunities to go offsite, and even then, only 10 people could go at a time. Given the things they offered, it was kind of expensive, especially when compared to how close it was to Atria Chandler Villas.

"Clean, friendly community with great activities and food"
We visited this place and found the staff really helpful. The community looked clean and pleasant. The menu was tempting, and they offered a lot of activities. Even though it wasn’t close enough for us, we would still suggest this place for taking care of a loved one.

"Limited Privacy But Clean and Friendly Setting"
If you need to leave your living space, you can only get out through the main front door, which doesn't give you much privacy. I prefer not having people keep tabs on when I leave or return. The overall community looks clean and properly cared for. The staff seems kind-hearted, and the folks living there seemed happy.

"Mom Feels at Home"
The people who work here are nice and always ready to help. They plan things for us to do every day and even take us out sometimes. My mom enjoys the food here, especially the salad bar. Her apartment has a patio that's all fenced in, which is nice. They let people have pets, and they work hard to keep everything clean. There are big trees in the backyard, but sometimes the grass doesn't look so great. Still, this place feels cozy and comfortable, like home. I think it's a good choice for anyone looking for a place like this.

"Beware of Misleading Facts about Assisted Living Facilities"
My sister only spent 40 days at this assisted living facility and I'm getting her out ASAP. I would have done it earlier, but I had to travel and didn't have other choices. What I'm going to share in this review are plain FACTS—real life situations and information you can check BEFORE deciding to place your loved one here. FACT: On your tour, you'll be greeted by MANY cheerful staff members, be shown around the entire facility, meet everyone including the janitor probably receive a tasty little snack from their kitchen. However, they won't mention that after 6 pm there's NO ADMIN on duty. If your family member sleeps soundly all night, needs no help, never calls out for comfort, doesn't disturb anyone for 12 hours...you will like this place. However, be conscious that at night, there is no RN or ADMINISTRATOR present. Only "med-techs" are there who can call 911 in emergency, but can't even identify the medication they're giving...yes, for real. FACT: There is an understated law that lets the facility dispense medication an hour early or an hour late. Don't anticipate it an hour early, no matter how much pain your family member is in and NEVER upset a med-tech....yes, for real. FACT: If you ask for a medication dispenser device (a locked box that gives medication only on schedule), you'll be told it's not allowed by "corporate." It's likely because it's cheaper for you to rent one, but the facility charges you way more to do the same job....only, they do it late...yes, for real. FACT: You may not realize that your family member could be sleeping on dirty linens in a room that is barely cleaned. When you inquire about it, you'll be told that the person "refused housekeeping" and "wanted to do their own laundry" even without detergent and are shelling out $3000 monthly. Watch closely, because housekeeping suddenly starts delivering their service again...yes, for real. FACT: If your family member is prescribed pain medication to "be taken every 6 hours as needed," know that this means they will HAVE TO ASK for their drugs, even at an ungodly hour. Yes....really. Make sure the doctor orders it without "as needed" if you want them to receive their medication on time. FACT: The place seems marvelous when you tour. There are presentations, way too many activities, and trips to Walmart and the Dollar Store. But beware, if your loved one needs ANY kind of mental or physical THERAPY, you'll need to set this up on your own through insurance. Yes....really FACT: If your loved one isn't active and independent, monitor their food intake. Room service doesn't exist even if they feel too weak to go to the dining room and, besides, that's where they give out the medicines, even when it's unlawful, just so it makes life easier for med-techs. Yes....really FACT: If your loved one requires "care" during the night, or consolation, get ready to hire outside help. Yes, really. After the med-tech complained, "it's not my job", I learned this. There are supposedly caregivers on duty, but apparently, they are all EXTREMELY BUSY. FACT: Vitals like blood pressure are only recorded ONCE A MONTH and this is done as frequently as it gets. Yes....really.....and you are picking up the tab of at least $3000 monthly for, "what is required". Those are the realities. They can be checked. These are the FACTS we all deserve to know BEFORE we admit our loved ones in ANY OF THESE PLACES.

"Understaffed and Lacking Care, Ideal Only for Self-Sufficient Retirees"
Brookdale Chandler Regional would be great for someone just wanting to retire--I'd rate them a solid 5 if that's all you're looking for. But if you or your loved ones need help and care, I'd only give them a 1. The caregivers there are really nice and seem to care a lot, but they're spread too thin. Even they know it. After 6pm when most of the staff has gone, the place is deserted. I wandered around for a half-hour and didn't see one employee. I'm not happy with this place at all.

"Great staff and too much good food"
The staff was great from the moment we walked in. Mom and Dad were nervous about moving from their big house to an assisted living apartment. The staff helped ease their worries. The activities here will help them reconnect with people. The on-site hair salon was a big plus for Mom. They both say there's too much food at each meal, and it's too good to waste.

"Need daily advocacy for residents in Horizon Bay"
Horizon Bay is state-approved for directed care, and that's about the only real plus side. The staff here have a high rate of turnover. The abilities and performances of these care staff members are hit or miss — some are decent, others are downright awful, especially when it comes to being polite and carrying out their responsibilities. There simply aren't enough care staff members to take care of all the residents who need assistance, and as a result, the response time to calls is often frustratingly slow. On average, it takes 10 mins, but it can stretch to 20 mins or more, which is a big problem when you urgently need help. As such, this facility is the kind where it becomes necessary for the resident to have someone advocating for them daily to ensure that the staff members fully understand and cater to their needs. And let's not forget — the cost for care here leans heavily on the expensive side.

"Crucial Appointment Dismissed, Unprofessional Atmosphere Revealed"
I'd actually give less than half a star if I could. We scheduled a visit to check this place out and even called to confirm before we left. But when we got there, there was no one to welcome us; we had to ring their bell multiple times before someone finally showed up. As we were shown around, there were hardly any staff or residents in sight. It seemed like they were having a big meeting, possibly with some people from their head office. It was clear they were more focused on making a good impression on them, rather than offering quality care or maintaining the facility properly. The staff member we had originally intended to meet never showed up. I got a very unprofessional vibe from them and I would never suggest anyone take their loved ones here.

"Not Enough Support for Memory or Confusion Problems"
After visiting, I noticed this facility is not enough like an assisted living home. It's too independent, with the building being freely open for entries and exits. During the day and evening, there are only three caregivers taking care of 90 residents, and only one is present at night. The facility is pretty large and open, which could potentially confuse residents. I found that it's more suitable for individuals who do not have severe memory problems or confusion.
