"Awful Care and Bad Food at Brookdale Deer Creek"
My family member stayed at Brookdale Deer Creek, and it was a really bad experience. They didn't pay any attention to her and just left her in her room while her dementia got worse. There weren't any activities to keep her busy. The food was just awful, it tasted like cardboard. Nothing they said they would do, they actually did. It was just awful and I wouldn't tell anyone to send their family member there.

"Overall positive experience with some limitations."
There was some confusion about finding a primary health provider. The common areas are really clean, and the staff is friendly and helpful. My mom enjoys the food and stays busy with activities. The cost matches the care she needs. They limit services, which is good because my mom's care exceeds that. Overall, I'm happy with the facility.

"Frustration with Billing Issues at Brookdale Assisted Living Facility"
My experience at Brookdale has been kinda mixed. I'm pretty upset right now because of all the charges I'm getting billed. We talked about it before, and I thought it was solved, but then I got another bill that was twice as much. At first, everyone was really nice and helpful, but once we were settled in, things changed. Tomorrow, we're going to talk about this billing problem. If it's not fixed, we might have to find another place for my mom.

"Great Assisted Living Community!"
The community is small, so everyone knows the residents. They make an effort to learn their names and get to know their families. We think it’s a great place for our loved one. The dining room is bright with lots of windows, nice table settings, and flowers. It always smells clean, even when we visit unexpectedly. The marble floor sparkles. We’ve recommended this community to others and will keep doing so.

"Potential home for mom, but high cost and urine smell"
My husband and I checked out this assisted living place as a possible home for my mom. We toured mainly the shared rooms where each resident had a personal bedroom with a door. However, one down side was that residents needed to go to the main area to use the bathroom. Unfortunately, a lot of areas smelled strongly like urine. The guide mentioned they're almost done with some updates, but given the high cost, I wasn't too impressed. Prices are a la carte, so help with things like changing, showering, going to the bathroom and keeping track of medicine costs extra. Even though it’s near our house, it's not our top pick.

"Smooth Transition: Dad's Happy Stay at Brookdale Deer Creek"
My dad just moved to Brookdale Deer Creek six weeks ago. The staff, including managers, nurses, aides, housekeeping, and dining room staff, have all been amazing. They're very friendly and always ready to help. Before I returned home to Illinois, I stayed in Florida for a month to make sure my dad settled in well. There were some small issues like laundry and housekeeping, but they listened to our comments and fixed everything promptly. Dad seems to really enjoy it there and keeps talking about how nice everyone is. It's tough to give up your home, car, and independence, but it was the right decision, especially since dad, who is 94 years old, agreed it was time. Even though we're out of state, we're confident that dad is safe, happy, and well cared for at Brookdale Deer Creek!

"Critical Evaluation: Accountability and Cleanliness Needed at Brookdale"
My husband resided in a Homestead facility before moving to Brookdale at Deer Creek due to proximity to my work. On my first visit, I spoke to Stacy who provided pricing details and information. I later returned who kindly showed me smaller rooms suited to my husband's mobility. Shockingly, I spotted various cockroaches in most rooms. They assured me this would be addressed. 1. We were assigned a cleaner - an older man who left much to be desired in his cleaning efforts. Missing spots and using a dirty mop were regular occurrences. I've even tried to train him on how to clean properly, and when he failed to maintain standards, I found myself cleaning my husband's room. 2. My primary issue was with the Aids, mainly due to language barriers and a lack of interest in providing quality care. I went out of my way to establish relationships and assist them in providing care for my husband. My efforts included organizing my husband's room in an easy-to-navigate manner. This worked briefly, but to my dismay, I discovered Aids are rotated monthly, leading me to train new staff repeatedly. The lack of steady, caring, accountable aids was very disconcerting. 3. The nursing station staff seemed overwhelmed, which may negatively affect the quality of care. 4. The reception staff was a mix of pleasant and professional offered different levels of professionalism and friendliness. 5. The business office director, often seemed disinterested and unresponsive. 6. The executive administrator, was initially approachable but gradually became evasive, particularly when I needed assistance with financial adjustments. Overall, Brookdale isn't terrible, but it could benefit from improved accountability at all levels. An emphasis on ensuring higher quality of care and cleanliness could elevate its standing in the community. For Brookdale's improvement and the family's peace of mind, I've detailed these experiences. I'm now seeking a new facility where both my husband and I can feel comfortable.

"Neglected and Afraid at Assisted Living Facility"
I made arrangements for my husband to have a 13-day rest at this assisted living facility. He went in able to walk, eat, talk, and knowing where to go to the bathroom. I even mentioned that they should call our kids if ever they had any trouble taking care of him. They didn't even make a single call. Five days into his stay, my son dropped by for a visit. He found my husband in bed, lying in a diaper that hadn't been changed, with his meals untouched. He couldn't even get up without help and had diaper rash. Out of necessity, my son decided to stay with him at the center to make sure he was taken care of. After my husband fell and we had to call the paramedics, we decided to hire a personal aide to accompany him to his meals. After I came to pick him up, he was in a wheelchair and noticeably scared. But after just a day back home with us, he was back to walking and talking, and able to move around on his own. He still wears diapers, but he stays dry most of the time and lets me know when he needs to go. They also seemed to have lost all his underwear and socks during his stay. This is definitely not the place we'll choose to entrust his care again.

"Expecting Better Care in Assisted Living - Major Disappointment"
For about 16 months now, my mom has been living in the Memory Care Unit. We're starting to be really disappointed with everything here. When we first moved her in, the place was run by Emeritus Corp and it seemed pretty good. It was hard to get ahold of the important staff, but there were activities, the food was okay, and the living space wasn't bad. It was also affordable with her Social Security and some other help. Then Brookdale Corp took over and things started changing a lot. The important staff, like the Exec Directors and the Senior Nursing Staff, keep changing or getting fired. My relatives that come by have noticed that mom and other residents aren't taken care of all the time — about 1 out of 4 visits. Other times, things are fine. Something we noticed is that a lot of her stuff, like clothes and bedding, go missing — about 80%. And what's left in her room isn't even hers! Even when we buy new things and mark them with her name and room number, they disappear after a few weeks. I'm trying to see if the facility will take responsibility for this. One thing we don't complain about is the food. No matter what others say, she likes their meals. And when I visited her for a week, it tasted fine to me. The facility would have parties, memory games, and even field trips for the residents, but that was back in May. Now, there are less activities and no more field trips. They have hired more aides, but it's sometimes hard to understand them, due to language differences, and talking to the staff in general is tricky. When Brookdale took over, they fired the Director of the Memory Care Unit and even though I was trying to improve things with them, at least there was someone there who cared for the residents. Now, when I'm 3000 miles away, I need someone there who communicates well. The new Director is keen on making things better, but so was the last one who only lasted a few weeks, and I am unsure what the present Exec. Director will do. He hasn't been there long enough for me to see what changes he will make. I'll update this review as things progress. I'm looking at what other possibilities are there, but our budget isn't that big.

"Horrific Care: Steer Clear of this Assisted Living Facility"
Man, where do I even start? What we got is way less than what we were promised. The staff is terrible, definitely the worst I've ever seen. They don't seem trained, they have no idea about customer service and they act like they don't care about their residents. They basically run the place because the people in charge are never around. Speaking of the management, it's a mess. My mom's been there for two months, and in that time there have been numerous changes in the directorship, nursing lead, and aides lead. The worst part is that none of them work weekends and they don't come in until after 9:30 AM. Most of the time with the aides is between 6:30 and 10:00 AM, but there are no supervisors around. The aides, who hardly speak English, just don't seem to care at all. I'm not just complaining, this is a verified observation over the last eight weeks. The care is bad, the food is terrible, and there are virtually no activities. Plus, all the staff seem to hate one another.

"Overall, things are good."
I believe most things are good. Some people complain about the food. It would be better if we could choose where to sit during meals. They said dinner was from 4:30 to 6:30, but they start clearing everything by 6:00. The food is the main issue. We've had to be more proactive than expected. The location is lovely, and it's a friendly community. I also think there should be cameras in the hallways.

"Terrible Memory Care Home Experience"
My time dealing with this Memory Care home was awful. There was a really bad smell all over the place. There were no activities for residents like they had promised. Whenever I tried reaching out to the staff, it was a challenge. My relative was in the same clothes for three days straight. His son and I had the responsibility of showering and shaving him. Both of us spotted German cockroaches in his bathroom area. I had no choice but to remove him from that place within less than two weeks. They have yet to refund us for the remaining days since mid-January. I have side-by-side pictures of him when he started there and five days later. It deeply saddens me to think that I placed him in such conditions. Fortunately, he's now in a very caring facility with great activities for more than half the day. The staff there truly care about him and his well-being.

"Improved Meal & Pill Timing Needed at Assisted Living"
Emeritus has been mostly okay for my mom so far. However, there are two things she's not too happy with. The first one is the food. She says it's not that tasty. I'm not really sure how they can fix that. But from what I know, my mom usually eats more if the food is yummy, not just because she "has to eat." She used to be a brilliant cook and baker when she was younger and more active. The second issue can be easily fixed: they need to give her her bedtime pill at a time that works better for her. Initially, they gave her the pill around 8 pm every night. This meant she had to turn off the TV (and miss her favorite shows) and go to bed way earlier than she usually does. Now, they give her the pill anytime between 8 pm and midnight! If she gets the pill too late, she still has to wake up early for breakfast. So she doesn't get enough sleep and ends up falling asleep after breakfast during the day. All my mom really wants is to watch TV, read, eat good food, and live a safe, peaceful life. For a 95 year old lady, I don't think that's asking for too much. I'm sure she's well-cared for and help is always at hand, but I'm worried about her not getting the simple comforts she wants. Really, all she wants is better food and a set time for her bedtime pill. I get that folks in assisted living or nursing homes might miss their old lives and can be a little grumpy. I've heard as much from family and neighbors while looking for a place for mom. But can't they make things a little more tailored to each person? Just think about it. What would you want if you were in my mom's shoes? What would you expect? What would make you feel even just a little bit happier?

"Neglectful staff and unaddressed theft at assisted living facility"
Like a previous review stated, my relative was forced to call 911 after staff didn't answer multiple calls for assistance, the use of the alert pendant also provided. Over a period of seven months, various precious belongings and jewelry worth several thousands of dollars went missing from their room. Despite our complaints, the management showed no interest in tackling this issue, nor did they take any action. While some staff members treated the residents kindly, not all were considerate. Any issues regarding my family member’s care were met with resistant attitudes from the administration instead of assistance in finding solutions. Unfortunately, my relative was quite distressed at the home. She has passed away now, but she was eagerly looking into other care homes before her time came.

"Accommodating and Friendly Staff at Its Best"
It’s been great, they are very accommodating. Philip Lord and the whole staff are awesome. This place was the nicest one we saw. Two things helped me decide: other places had everyone lined up in the lobby like the receptionist had to look after them, and this one didn’t have a smell. Dixie Laflair with A Place For Mom was a sweetheart; she helped me so much and listened when I was crying. She was very knowledgeable and a big part of making this happen.

"Emergency! Terrible Lack of Care at Emeritus Assisted Living!"
Don't let the look of this place trick you! They simply lack the proper care necessary for folks who can't fully care for themselves. My sister practically always stayed in her room since they never escorted her for meals or activities. She was spending extra for level 3 care that they promised but never provided. After less than a week, my sister had to contact 911 to get help because despite ringing numerous times, the Emeritus staff never came. Thankfully, the police did and brought the paramedics. She reached the emergency room around mid-morning. She was starving, upset, and a tad disoriented due to the lack of breakfast. The ER staff checked her over and gave her two lunches to curb her hunger. After that, she had to return to Hospice until we found a proper group home that could offer her the care she needed. Now, she's getting the right care she needs. Now, Emeritus is chasing my sibling who has Power of Attorney for an extra month's rent. This is despite their own rules stating immediate termination of the contract without financial penalty if a resident needs a higher level of care. Even though her doctor provided proof that she needed more care than Emeritus could provide, they're apparently choosing to disregard their own contract. I recently got wind of a PBS expose on Emeritus titled "Life and Death in Assisted Living". It captures exactly what Emeritus is like. You can find the link [taken out]. I can only give Emeritus at Deer Creek a half-star rating at best, but frankly, they shouldn't even be permitted to run an assisted living facility. They might pass as a place for retired, but able-bodied, adults. Other than that, they fall severely short and tarnish the reputation of "assisted living". This has been reported to the state of Florida Ombudsman authorities.

Some staff members she absolutely adores—they're wonderful and take excellent care of her. But once in a while, it's not so great. The activities are decent. We picked Emeritus at Deer Creek for my dad because it seemed like a good deal compared to other places. The people there are really nice and helpful. They've been extra helpful in helping my dad settle in. Even though it's independent living, they check on him if he misses a meal. However, there's a lingering stale smell since he moved in, and when I asked for linen service, nothing happened for three hours. As for activities, it seems like the residents aren't very active, so there are fewer activities available.
