"Hit or Miss: Mixed Bag Experience at Waterside Landing"
Waterside Landing is pretty clean, and it's in a nice neighborhood. The physical therapy is top-notch. But, some of the staff aren't respectful, while others are great. The help isn't consistent, and they're slow to respond when residents need them. The bosses don't talk to each other, and they're not great at telling residents what's up.

"Mixed Bag at Assisted Living"
The place was supposed to manage my loved one's medications, but it took forever to get hearing aids to the hospital during their stay. Overall, they didn't communicate well with our family. I was disappointed when they went through my loved one's fridge while we were moving their stuff after they passed away. Plus, they didn't even know about my loved one's stroke or broken leg.

"Avoid Bed Bug Infestation and Lies at Newly Reopened Facility"
This place didn't have ants, but was infested with BED BUGS, and now they're reopening with a new name. They first claimed they had issues due to Hurricane Irma, which was a complete fib! They then told everyone they had two months to leave, scattering more than 200 residents. Living nearby, I haven't seen signs of thorough cleaning. I also know city workers who've reported no significant changes. Seriously, don't risk your family and avoid wasting money here, where bed bugs are a given! On a side note, their administrator [name removed], isn't worth a dime.

"Decent Facility, Did Not Keep Some Promises, Still Adjusting"
My dad recently moved into this place. He's doing pretty good, but they didn't do some things they said they would. I was told they could give a lot of care, but we actually had to get extra help for him. Other than that, the place is nice and it's kept clean. Dad's happy with the food. Do your homework before picking a place for your loved one. We're still figuring things out here, but I'd say I recommend this place.

"Brookdale was the Answer to Months of Our Prayers"
We always knew that moving a loved one into assisted living or a nursing home might be necessary one day, but that didn't make it easier. After visiting many places that honestly made us think about continuing to care for my mom ourselves (even though we knew we couldn't give her the care she needed), we settled on a place that was expensive, lacked the right amenities, and wasn’t somewhere we felt good about. At the last minute, we were told to check out Brookdale Margate, and everything changed. The sales director, was great to work with, and Virginia, the administrator, was organized and helpful. The director was amazing—he truly cares about the place and making it the best. Even the housekeeping and maintenance teams were professional and eager to help. The facility was so clean and nice that I could see myself living there, and the services were exactly what my mom needed. The rent was about the same as renting a regular apartment, but it came with 24/7 medical supervision, skilled nurses, daily transportation, lots of activities, and three fantastic meals a day, plus tons of other amenities. We could choose what extra services Mom needed, like medication management and help with bathing, for a reasonable extra fee, and skip what she didn’t need. For the first time in years, my mom felt independent again. She even had a pendant to call for help anytime and nurses who checked on her regularly. Her rent also included housekeeping, laundry, linens, and transportation to the bank, grocery store, or doctor’s appointments. The food was so good that my picky mom ate more in one meal than she had in a long time, after losing almost 100 pounds the year before. She loved her apartment, brought her own furniture, and was even allowed to have her little Yorkie with her. The apartment had everything: two TVs, a full kitchen with new appliances, a screened patio, a big bedroom with a walk-in closet, and a senior-friendly bathroom. Before, during, and after the move, everyone at Brookdale Margate was so helpful. They welcomed all our family, including my 5-year-old son. Mom can invite family and friends to stay as long as they like, up to 7 days at a time. My whole family enjoys visiting, and we love the staff and the other residents. I truly believe Brookdale Margate will add years to my mom's life by giving her a real chance to live again. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants their aging loved ones to live independently in their retirement.

"Mom is adjusting; friendly staff, good communication."
Mom is still getting used to her new surroundings, but she seems to be doing well. She is pretty independent and doesn't need much help. The staff seems friendly. Overall, I would recommend them to anyone.

"Neglected Facility: Poor Upkeep and Lax Staff"
The company really needs to come and check out this facility! It looks nice from the outside, but the inside is a mess. This could be a top-notch healthcare place if it wasn't so dirty and neglected. It's the same mess every time I visit, which shows how little effort the staff put into cleaning. The employees don't seem to care about their duties and ignore requests. They also aren't quick to make sure medications are delivered as needed and they're supposed to gather laundry but often forget, blaming the residents. The air isn't fresh inside the building, it has a stale smell. Talking with the staff is almost impossible, you'd think you were trying to chat with the president! I've tried to speak with a manager, but it's always a fruitless effort and they never return my calls. The same goes for the accounting department; unless you threaten to complain, there's no response. I would recommend finding a better place for loved ones - unless there's intervention from the company, the facility is on a downhill path. I'm now in the process of looking for a new place.

"Decent Place but Needs Upgrades and Honest Room Showcasing"
At this place, my sis is doing okay overall, but they definitely need to make a few changes. When they present to you a studio apartment and the one you actually shift into, they're not identical. My sister's apartment feels too tiny and her stove isn't working. I've recommended they should take off the stove to free up some space. Plus, when they bug spray, they shouldn't just do it for one room but the whole area. Considering it's quite an older building, it definitely requires some refurbishing.

"Urgent Improvement Needed for Assisted Living Facility"
At first glance, this assisted living facility looks quite attractive. However, stepping inside tells a different story. It appears as though they don't circulate the airflow because, well, it smells like an old-age home. The dining area is large with a variety of table sizes, and the building is divided into two parts. Unfortunately, as I looked around, I noticed the place was not as clean as I expected it to be - the elevator was downright dirty. My dad's room was quite pleasant, a one-bedroom space with a kitchenette. Nonetheless, a huge step up in cleanliness across the whole place is necessary! It's noticeable that the outside of the facility is better maintained than the indoors. An unexpected inspection from the main office would probably do wonders - perhaps then they'd ask themselves if they'd place their own parents in there! I got a lot of promising words from the staff but as soon as I left, they didn't follow through. My dad is here just because I haven't yet had time to find a better place but trust me, as soon as I do, he'll be relocated. These are people's beloved family members residing in your facility, so it would be just kind if you'd invest some time into cleaning up. Peering into elevator corners and checking floor cleanliness with your cleaning crew wouldn't hurt. Sitting behind a desk without tending to these issues is why people show dissatisfaction with your facility!

"Affordable, Yet Lacking in Service and Activities"
My mom isn't really liking her stay in there. However, the cost is decent and it fits well within my budget. She seems to have quite a large room, like an apartment, which isn’t typical for assisted living facilities, and she enjoys the food as well. However, there are negative aspects too. The staff seems to neglect their work! They are supposed to clean her room and do her laundry, yet many times it's left undone unless I remind them! There are hardly any engaging activities, and oftentimes, even special events get cancelled at the last minute, as they claim not enough people are interested. Several staff members are unkind and not willing to assist beyond their basic tasks, even for minor issues. Though there are a couple of exceptions, it's not the general rule. The only saving grace is a man who's always ready to help solve any issues, even on his non-working days!

"A Fair Place, Though Not Perfect—Needs More Attention To Care"
I informed A Place For Mom about my budget of $1850 and they directed me towards this care home. Unfortunately, they had no options that fit within my budget which was a hassle. Upon arrival in September, I was informed that the rates are going to increase next year. On top of that, I had to pay a $1,500 community fee. It seems more like a business than a personal caring environment. Nevertheless, my mother is safe here and the surroundings are neat and clean. I appreciated the layout and development of the place. However, I believe the care aspect needs a lot more attention and care.

"Inadequate Service and Mismanagement for Independent Living Residents"
Ten months back, when I walked into this assisted living facility, it catered to healthier, more independent individuals, which matched my needs perfectly. But lately, there is an influx of residents requiring higher levels of care, like those in nursing homes. Moreover, I was paired to live with a lady whose deteriorating health leaves her in a state of constant disarray. My own apartment, which ought to grant me peace, has transformed into a hub of chaos. The management dictates that I should shift to another room instead of her, where my potential roommates also seem to be dependent. In terms of the fees I shell out, I don't feel I am receiving apt service in return, and my rights as a resident are disregarded. A handful of people certainly empathize. However, the higher-ups continuously give me the runaround. The issue began on August 8, and there still isn't a solution in sight. My suggestion would be to skip this place as it falls short on cleanliness standards too. If you're hoping for quick fixes, you'll be disappointed because every response is 'corporate needs to approve.'

"Great People, Slow Service at Local Assisted Living Facility"
I appreciate the location of this assisted living facility because it's nearby. However, they need to focus on completing tasks they've promised within a reasonable time frame. For instance, my mom required certain papers to be sent over to her doctor, but we had to wait for more than a week. She needs a hip surgery and can't schedule her pre-surgery visit until the papers get there. Furthermore, she needed a higher toilet seat which wasn't installed for over two weeks as promised. Because of this delay, she ended up having an accident. Don't get me wrong, the facility is not terrible, the people are good, but they lag in getting things done at the right time. Mom enjoys the meals and her apartment and is fond of the people here. But getting assistance for her is like trying to move a mountain.

"Exposé Warns of Neglect and Rodents at Emeritus Facilities"
You should check out the documentary "Life and Death in Assisted Living." If you assume that everything is smooth sailing at this assisted living facility when you're not present, you are sadly mistaken. They advertise having "furry friends" but in reality, they're dealing with a rat infestation - they've even chewed through the walls. These rodents have become such an issue that they've invaded the kitchen and hallways at night. Some residents have even moved out after their caregivers were bitten. One resident recently attempted suicide, while other residents have exhibited disturbing behaviors in public. When pets make a mess on the floors or carpets, they are simply left to dry rather than properly cleaned. Life here is predominantly dull with no major activities to kindle interests. The owner doesn't reinvest in the facility unless a state inspection is imminent, leaving expenses to fall on the residents. WPEC-TV Channel 12 is gearing up to air an exposé on two of Emeritus's facilities in November 2013 in a three part series. The Resident Assistants, or RAs, are able to distribute medication after only a four-hour training, resulting in inexperienced handling of important medications.
