"Great place, but needs more activities"

My experience has been really good. My mom likes it here. She enjoys the food. The staff is awesome. The room sizes are good, though they could be bigger. There are plenty of common areas. They have a wonderful outdoor courtyard for residents. They need more variety in the activities.

"Expensive, unfriendly facility feels like a prison."

The personnel here are extremely unkind! The building is secured with a system that requires a key fob for entry and exit, which makes it feel like a jail. This is certainly not what I envisioned for assisted living. Plus, the costs are excessively high.

"Subpar Food and Staff, Dull Activities at Assisted Facility"

This place isn't great. The food and employees aren't good, and the activities are dull and uninteresting.

"Brusque Staff Only Interested in Resident's Money"

The employees are incredibly impolite and only care about your cash.

"Moving Mom Was Easier Than Expected at Bickford of Ames"

Well, my siblings and I thought moving Mom to an assisted living facility would be a big hassle, but we were totally wrong. Bickford of Ames in Ames, Iowa made everything so easy! After years of hearing "I'm not moving out of my house, we were surprised at how smoothly things went. The staff welcomed her with big smiles and made her feel right at home, easing any worries she had. Now, she’s really happy. Thanks a million!

This community is lovely, and they take good care of my mom. She's safe here, and the staff is friendly. The place is clean and well-maintained, with nice activities and good meals. I highly recommend it.

"Poor Treatment of Residents: Inadequate Care & Unprofessional Staff"

My mom lived here for half a year and I saw many upsetting things. Only the cook treated the elders with respect! The other staff didn't care, unless family members were there. They would let the senior citizens sleep in their wheelchairs in the open areas for hours. This reminded me of the older nursing homes I used to volunteer at when I was younger. The only game arranged was "BINGO," where the rewards were bits of candy bars, even though most of the folks, including my mom, had diabetes! That's not an okay prize. During a meeting for family members, it was shared that one of the elders didn't like the "goth" gear that the support staff was wearing. She said it was scary and looked like witches. Regrettably, the person who was told this shared it with the workers, who didn't appreciate being called witches. Guess who was supported? Not the residents! I don't think the place was managed properly or kindly. They had all the old folks wait in a small hallway to get medicine before or after meals. Did everyone really need their medicines at the same time every day? My mom passed away here and I wish I could have afforded a better place for her. And there's more: A cleaner was selling her homemade baked goods to the residents during Christmas. She told them their family would like presents from them and would even clean their rooms more thoroughly for an extra fee. She wasn't punished for this!

"Neglectful Staff and Poor Management at Assisted Living Home"

My mom stayed at this assisted living home for half a year. A bunch of stuff I saw there was not cool at all. Only the cook really respected the senior folks there. The rest of the staff only acted nice when relatives like me were there. They even let the elders sleep in their wheelchairs for hours in the main space. Made me think about an old-timey nursing home I helped out at when I was younger. The one fun time they had planned was "BINGO", and they gave out bits of candy bars as prizes. Not good when a bunch of them, my own mom included, had diabetes! A family meeting spilled the beans that one of the older folks wasn't keen on how the young caregivers dressed - all dark clothes, black hair and lots of makeup. It scared her and reminded her of witches. But when she told the head staff, they just spread the news around to the young staff and caused a fuss! Guess who the head staff backed up? Yep, not the elders, that's for sure! The place couldn't be managed worse than this, if you ask me. They had all the folks squished in a small hall to get their meds before or after they ate. Like they all needed their pills at the exact same time? My mom's last days were spent there, and I really wish I could've placed her somewhere that saw her as a person, not a job. But it wasn't this place. Oh, and there's more. One of the cleaning ladies tried to sell her Christmas baked goods to the old folks. She'd say their families would appreciate it. And she'd clean their rooms better for an extra price. That lady was left off the hook, believe it or not!
