"Mixed Feelings: Assisted Living Facility Needs Improvements"

I stayed at Bickford for a few weeks in 2022. The food's alright and some staff, especially the CNAs, are caring. But it feels kinda like a prison where they give you a little freedom now and then. You can't ask questions about your meds or why you can't go for a walk. The courtyard feels like a sad prison yard. Some staff, like nurses and admin, talk to you like you're a kid. And sometimes, dementia patients just wander around with no one knowing what to do. The place feels too sterile, like a fancy church, with too much Pottery Barn stuff and crosses and Jesus everywhere. They don't seem to realize there are other religions out there.

"Food Quality and Memory Care Issues at Bickford Assisted Living"

My relative thought there were many memory care patients at Bickford. The residents had different stages of memory loss and couldn’t chat with others. We found out that it’s mostly memory care from other healthcare workers in the area. They’re careful not to schedule visits during mealtime. But why? Another loved one at Bickford lost weight due to poor food quality and lack of encouragement to eat. When we asked staff about this, they said, ‘We’re assisted living; it’s not our job.’ Also, there’s a problem with missing food items. I saw a sandwich without key ingredients and broth that looked like tomato juice with big potatoes in a small cup. Sadly, management didn’t address our concerns.

"Positive Experience in Assisted Living"

We picked Bickford of Iowa because we needed to decide quickly, they had space, and it cost less than some others we considered. It turned out to be a good match for her needs. They offer 2 room sizes, and we chose the bigger one at first. It's smaller than expected but enough for her. She gets along great with the staff and seems happy here. The only issue is limited visiting times; it's hard with my job, so I can't visit as much as I'd like. Overall, I definitely recommend this place.

"Comfortable Assisted Living Experience"

Mom is doing okay since she moved here. It was a big change, but she's adjusting. She stays busy with community activities, which is good for her. The food is good, no complaints there. Most of the staff are really nice and patient. We had to remind them not to ask Mom what she wants for housekeeping and bed linens, just do it. She likes her apartment setup; she could bring some personal things.

"Great staff and clean facility, perfect for my husband"

I'm happy with my husband's move here. He's still getting used to it, but I know he's in good hands. The staff is great—always helpful and friendly when I visit. The place is always clean, and they offer good activities and nice meals. They're taking good care of him and meeting his needs. I would recommend this community; it's working out well for us.

"Lackluster Assisted Living Facility Disappoints Visitors"

We visited this place, but nothing really stood out. The staff didn't seem friendly, they didn't even look at us while we walked around. It was strange that there weren't any residents around, especially since they said they were full. I did like the dining area and how cozy it felt, but there was a bad smell everywhere. The whole place, including the apartments, felt small and dark. I wouldn't feel good about leaving my loved one there.

"Older Family-Owned Assisted Living in Renovation, Average Experience"

This place is owned by a family and it's kinda old. They're fixing it up though. It's not really special, neither good nor bad stuff stood out to me.
