"Good Care at Charter Senior Living Poplar Creek"
My loved one lives at Charter Senior Living Poplar Creek, and she gets really good care there. Based on what we've seen, I would recommend this place to others

"Average Care, High Cost at Local Assisted Living"
We picked Charter because it’s one of the not-so-many Level 2 Care places nearby. It seemed like the top choice back then and wasn’t too far to drive. If someone asked me, I’d say the care they give isn’t that great, they could make the food better, and the extra money for Level 2 Care doesn’t seem right. It’s too much, especially since most times, my mom doesn’t get help from two aides when she needs to get in or out of bed.

"Inadequate Staff and Slow Response at Care Facility"
The assisted living place doesn’t have enough workers, and they prefer to make everyone stay together in one room to keep an eye on them, rather than letting them stay in their own rooms and coming to check on them there. They hardly ever come to see if the people living there need anything, and they’re really slow to answer the help bell, sometimes they don’t even answer it at all.

"Friendly Community with Shelter Certificate"
We looked at a few places and chose this one because they have a Shelter certificate. This means my mom won't have to move again. The people here are really nice and they really care about her.

"Facility Struggles with Staffing and Patient Satisfaction"
I visit once or twice a week. My sister, who is paralyzed from the waist down, struggles when she needs to empty her bowels. Unfortunately, the facility hasn't provided a positive experience during the 3+ months she's been there. They receive instructions from her physician, but they often seem unprepared. The bigger issue is their staffing shortage. Sometimes my sister waits for help for over 2 hours. Despite claiming to understand her needs, they consistently fall short. The hardworking staff are overburdened.

"Needs Better Staff and Faster Help"
The place looks neat, but I thought someone would clean my family member’s room, and they haven’t. We chose Charter since my family member needed more help back then. They really should get better at answering quickly and paying more attention to the people living there. My family member asked for help by pressing the help button, and nobody came for two hours. It’d be great if all the workers were nice and kind too.

"Convenient, Clean, and Supportive Assisted Living for Recuperating Elderly"
Last summer, we needed a place for our mom while she recovered from a broken leg. The Charter was nearby her rehab center, and the rent was fair. The place is clean, and the staff are friendly. When she couldn't go back to independent living, she went back to Charter for those reasons.

"Mixed Feelings About Assisted Living Staff"
When we visited for the tour and met their team, we felt they were caring and attentive to our loved one's needs. The meals they serve look wonderful, but our loved one's opinions vary. They offer activities, but we hope the staff encourages participation more.

"Great Care, Good Value for Aging in Place"
The daytime caregivers are fantastic, but the nighttime ones can be a bit rough with my loved one. The staff is helpful and checks in with me regularly. has been especially great, and so has the head of nursing. They're understaffed like everyone else, so the response time is slower than expected. Overall, the value for the money is pretty good, especially compared to other places in the area. We appreciate the option to age in place here.

"Assisted living feels more like hotel, less like home"
I visited this place while searching for my parents’ new home. What I saw was pretty good. The staff were friendly, but they don’t take Medicaid. It felt more like a hotel than a community. Everything was tidy and nice, but it lacked that cozy feeling of home. They had a dining service and I saw residents having dinner. The staff were helping some of them move around. Overall, it was better than okay, and everything looked nice.

"Visited Recently Licensed, Isolated Assisted Living Facility"
This place just got its license and the memory care unit is on the second floor. I feel like she needs to get outside sometimes so she doesn't feel lonely. They didn't get their license in time and it's kind of out in the boonies. They showed me a book about how they think things should run. They even let people bring their kids and workers to talk and play with the residents like they are family. Plus, they let animals into the place. There's about one or two for every 10 to 20 people living there, which is good for making people happy.

"Dissatisfied with Care and Food Quality at Assisted Living Facility"
Our time here was not pleasant at all. The meals were awful and the staff were not helpful. The only person we liked was the lady who showed us around, the saleswoman. There were issues regarding health and the food was also not good. We didn't stay for more than a few weeks.

"Avoid Brookdale: Poor Care, Neglect, and Inaction"
Brookdale should have never accepted my mom. They simply weren't able to meet her care needs. The initial cost was $4,600, only to skyrocket to $9,600 after two weeks. During her two-month stay, she was allowed to fall eight times, missing her medication on 28 occasions. The police had to be called twice because she was left alone in the bathroom for three hours. She lost 89 pounds and developed an unmanageable UTI due to neglect. She suffered cuts on her legs from falls. They bathed her in her own wheelchair which ended up rusting and getting ruined. I had six face-to-face meetings with the Executive Director, trying to improve the situation, in addition to weekly calls. She did absolutely nothing. Other families were having the same issue. Not once did they call back to discuss my mom's needs, but our family is constantly bombarded with calls about the still-incorrect bill. Don't be fooled by the nice decor or friendly staff that greets you at the door. It's all a cover-up for the horrendous treatment your loved one is bound to endure, unfortunately.

"Friendly and Helpful, But Needs Clearer Communication"
I think Brookdale Hoffman Estates could be better at explaining their procedures and what we should be ready for. A few times, situations didn't go as we thought they would, or we needed an extra document or something similar. But they definitely excel in being nice and assisting us.

"Facility Not Ideal for Moderate Dementia Relative"
The facility simply wasn't right for our family member. It didn't give us a great vibe the moment we entered. If you're somewhat aware, like those with medium level dementia are, seeing others in worse condition could be pretty upsetting. The living space was super small. I'm not even sure how you'd fit a bed inside. It was pricier compared to another option we had in mind. The staff were fantastic though, and would've moved her in instantly if it was urgent.

"Great care and clean, friendly environment for Mom’s needs"
My husband and I are very pleased with Mom’s care at Emeritus. They have been excellent from the start, adjusting to Mom's care needs. The staff is helpful everywhere and have taken the time to understand her needs. The facility is clean, family-friendly, and the staff is great. We’ve joined some family events, which are really nice. Mom is in the memory care unit and has adjusted well. She’s improved a lot, gets good medical care, and interacts well with other residents with staff support. The cost is fair for the care provided, and I can’t find anything negative to say. As a former medical social worker, I’ve seen many facilities and have been impressed with Emeritus.

We're really happy with this place! It looks amazing, is very warm, welcoming, and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful, always handling things quickly. When you walk in, it feels like a fancy hotel, so I bet the residents feel like they're on a long vacation! I highly recommend it.

"Feels and Smells Too Much Like a Hospital"
I wasn't fond of the setup - the hallways felt very impersonal, reminding me of a hospital. It even had the scent of a medical facility. I figured my dad would sense this and wouldn't like it at all. He'd definitely not want to feel like he was being placed in an institution.

"Pricey Living Facilities With Cost Adding Up for Extra Care"

"Mixed Feelings at First Assisted Living Experience"
This is my first time dealing with an assisted living place. I moved my mom there in May, so I haven't had much time to really check it out. Overall, the staff is nice and mostly helpful, although some are better than others. But, I've got an issue with Rita. She's the only one who can help with billing questions, but she's hard to reach and takes forever to get back to me. I had to ask her multiple times for my mom's monthly statements (I manage her money because I have Power of Attorney), and when I finally reached her, she just made excuses before giving me what I needed. The place itself is clean and seems like they take care of it well. I haven't noticed any bad smells, which is a big deal for me because I can smell even the tiniest hint of something off.

"Very happy with the nice, welcoming facility!"
My mom is very happy and pleased here. The place is nice and a great setting for seniors. Since this is just a temporary stay, my mom is sad about having to move later, but it’s not because of Emeritus. I would definitely recommend this facility to anyone for their mom or dad.

"Location and Price Made a Difference"
The location mattered a lot to us, and the price was competitive compared to other places we considered. The staff was friendly and attentive, even allowing us to have lunch after the usual lunch hour. The caregiver-patient ratio seemed good, and their Alzheimer's care specialization was beneficial for my mother.

"Tour Mix-Up, Clean Place"
My scheduled tour wasn't in their records, but they accommodated us. Many seniors were in common areas doing activities, and the meal program seemed good. The rooms looked nice, and the place was clean, except for a sewage smell on the third floor. I'll follow up on this. The Director called me back and explained that the smell might have come from the maintenance area below, as they had a backup that day. They claim there's no more smell and invited me for another tour.

"Messy Facility But Nice Room and Staff"
It was a mess. I didn't meet with the person I was supposed to, not the first one, or the second, or even the third. I think one of them was supposed to be the director. They did have a pretty nice room in the Reminiscence section, and the terrace off the third floor dining room was great too. But the whole messiness of the place worries me. I did get to meet a lot of staff members, which was a good thing.
