"Great place for Mom with friendly people and clean facilities"

Heritage Woods in Watseka is a very nice place. It's pretty new, has spacious and well-lit hallways, and a large lobby with a high ceiling that makes it feel even bigger. Every time I visit Mom, everything is always clean, no matter the day or time. Now for the downside. The assisted living apartment should have a better kitchen. With only a small microwave and a "college room" refrigerator, it's hard for Mom to make even a snack, let alone a meal, if she doesn't like what's on the limited menu that day. There's no stove or oven, so no baking. There's a common kitchen with a stove and oven, but you can only use it if no one else is. Also, they seem a bit short-staffed. On Sunday afternoon, there were only two CNAs on duty. Despite these issues, this is really a wonderful place for Mom. Everyone is friendly, housekeeping is done weekly, and laundry is done twice a week! The best way to judge a facility is by the people who live there. Only one person was "crabby." Mom has been there almost four months, and when I visit every week, I talk to the residents. Except for the crabby one, they are all happy. Even when they talk about their kids who live too far away to visit more than once or twice a year, they say it with a smile and a giggle. Most residents know each other by name and were very welcoming to Mom at mealtimes. So far, Heritage Woods of Watseka is not only the best place we visited but also the best place for Mom.

"Examine Your Bills Closely at This Assisted Living Facility"

The facility is neat and enjoyable, but they're trying to bill me for when my mom wasn't even there. They also make residents who are eligible for Medicaid apply for food stamps. When my mom was moved to a nursing home, I paid for the days she was there until I handed back the keys - a total of 10 days. Now they've brought in a lawyer to demand an extra $1000. I've been asking for a clear and itemized bill but haven't gotten it. So you'd better make sure you understand all the charges on your bill and examine it very closely.
