"Friendly nurses vary; food and communication issues."
My loved one is at Grand Emerald Place, and things have been good overall. However, some nurses aren't as friendly as others, depending on the shift. I wouldn't eat the food there; it's not balanced, and dessert is weird, like half a banana or a few grapes. The activity director is great, but they need weekend help for more activities. For the money paid, there should be more interaction with management. Fixing problems like water leaks shouldn't take two weeks. Better communication would help, especially with my mom's memory issues.

"Friendly, Small Community with Personal Care"
I would recommend this place to others for their loved ones. Overall, we are happy with our experience here. This is a smaller community, and the staff gets to know the residents on a personal level. Everyone is friendly. There have been times when they haven't been able to accommodate my loved one's dietary restrictions.

"A Place with Concerns"
We visited the assisted living facility twice. The first time, there were no COVID restrictions, so we saw residents moving around. The second time, due to lockdown, we couldn’t see any residents. However, we did tour two model rooms and explore the facilities. It’s a nice place, but not suitable for our loved one. Her dementia would make it challenging to get to the dining room—she’d need to go from her room to the elevator, downstairs, and then to the dining area. We worried she might get lost, especially near the stairwell next to the elevator.

"Caring staff, good Covid protocol, fun activities, prompt communication"
We've found that they really care about giving the best care in a smaller, more personal setting. We were happy with their good Covid protocol. They still have activities. In the Fall, they had a sing-along with residents inside and a few family members outside, serving hot chocolate and cookies. We saw the activities director doing one-on-one crafting activities. Our family has visited a few times, two people at a time. We loved seeing photos of our loved one during the Holidays, smiling and wearing a Christmas hat. It made us feel so good. The staff have fun with the residents, like doing elf on the shelf. If they don't offer a service on-site, they can arrange off-site care. Once it's safe with Covid, they'll offer more on-site services like haircuts. When small issues come up, they contact us, and we work through them together. There are about 60 units here, with room for about 77 residents, which means our loved one gets more direct attention. When our loved one needs something, they let us know right away. Whenever we've needed anything, they've gone out of their way to help.

"Assisted Living Facility Excels in Communication and Service"
The community closes at 6 pm, so visiting after 6 isn't possible. They excel in communication between staff and family, promptly addressing any questions we have. I would recommend this community to others.

"Great food and fun events at this caring facility!"
My father and stepmother lived at Grand Emerald for a few years. They really liked the food, and we had a great time at the fun parties and family events the staff organized. The nurses were always very attentive. It’s a fantastic place!

"Poor Food, Lack of Choices and Inadequate Staffing at Facility"
The meals here are really bad and the serving sizes are too small. Most of the time, residents don't even get what they asked for from the preset menu because there isn't enough food, they run out of the needed ingredients, or the regular cook isn't around and a replacement person is cooking. This often leads to a lot of processed meat being served, and the fruits and vegetables are typically from a box or a can. Plus, they're short-staffed so the residents aren't always properly taken care of.

"Good Service, But High Cost and Nursing Home Odor"
The meals were really tasty, and the staff was super kind and listened to all my worries. But paying $3000 just to get in seems a lot. The only thing that bothered me was this nursing home smell, especially in one room where it was super strong.

"Satisfying Visit To This Home"

"Warm Community with Great Activities, Improving Communication"
This place is really nice and tidy. They offer a bunch of things to do for the people who live here. The food is good, and they give you plenty to eat. The staff is super nice, but sometimes they don’t talk enough with the family members. I asked them to help my aunt with her exercises, and all they had to do was move her wheelchair back a bit. They're getting better at talking to me, but sometimes they still don't call back. Overall, it seems like they're getting better.

"Welcoming Tour but Stairs Could Be a Concern"
I really liked the community when I toured it. The people were very friendly, and the staff was nice too. They even had a sign to welcome us, which was a nice touch. I don't have any complaints about that. But I was worried about the stairs since it was like an apartment building with many levels. I was concerned my mom might get confused, and there was nothing on the first floor for her.

"Mid review: Nice workers, but not enough of them"
Most of the workers at this place are nice and do their work well. But there are not enough of them to take care of everyone, especially the ones like my mom who need more help. Because she's getting worse, I'm worried I might need to move her somewhere else. I don't want to do that if I don't have to.

"Lovely community for my Mother in law!"
I've visited Grand Emerald a few times since my Mother in law moved in. It's clean and well taken care of. She says there's lots of food, and they make sure she eats. She enjoys bingo, church on Sundays, and going to the beauty salon. The staff has been nice, and she hasn't had any complaints.

"A Caring and Friendly Assisted Living Facility"
After my 96-year-old mom fell and broke her hip at home, we talked about moving to assisted living. Before this, she was very independent, doing her own cleaning, shopping, cooking, and laundry. She was hesitant at first, but while in rehab, she realized she might need help with bathing and other small tasks. I checked out all the assisted living places in the area and found Grand Emerald to be perfect. It's not huge like the newer ones, but it's really cute with pretty seasonal decor. It was always clean and had a homey feel that I liked. Everyone was friendly and nice. The price was very reasonable, which was a plus. Unfortunately, while my mom was in rehab, she got a C. diff infection twice. When we moved her to Grand Emerald, she got it again. The nurse was wonderful, making sure she got the care she needed. The aides were great, helping her to the restroom and with other tasks. The nurse kept me informed about sending her to the hospital because she was so weak and not eating. She came home again, but within a week, she had [removed] again. I understand that once you get C. diff, it's hard to get rid of and can come back many times, which is tough on the elderly. This last time in the hospital took a toll on her mind and body, and she passed away on December 11th. I am so grateful for Grand Emerald for their care and concern during the short time she was there. Everyone, from the administrator to the aides, was so friendly and nice. They really care about their residents and spent time getting to know them. Both times mom was in the hospital, the Administrator came to see her, which surprised both of us. She even got a get-well card the first time she was in the hospital. I can't give an honest review of the activities since mom wasn't there long enough to participate, but the monthly schedule looked fun. I met a few residents in the elevator, and they all said they loved it there. It was so homelike, friendly, and happy. The food was good, and the chef even talked to mom about what she could or couldn't eat as a diabetic. He would make something special for her if she wanted. Her room was always clean, and her laundry was done once a week. I can't say enough good things about Grand Emerald and the staff.

"A solid choice with room for improvement"
It's not bad but it's not what it could be, either. My parents stayed there. Two important things to know are about pricing and staffing levels. I'll add more comments after these sections. Pricing - Be very clear about your expectations when you look at the lease contract. We were considering two facilities. Grand Emerald has a community fee equal to one month's rent. The other facility, Wellbrooke of South Bend, didn't have that. We chose Grand Emerald because we were told we could use our current outside pharmacy for our mother's prescriptions. It was cheaper than Wellbrooke's contracted pharmacy. I thought I'd save enough to cover the community fee over time. But we couldn't use the pharmacy we discussed once our mother moved in. I never got a good explanation for this change, and I felt it was a serious misrepresentation during the evaluation process. Weekend Staffing - Grand Emerald was mostly empty when my parents were there. They had no more than 21 residents at a time. Because of this, staffing levels were very low on weekends. The staff was so busy they couldn't take the time to care for the residents as well as they wanted to. Like all other places, this is a business, and labor costs are the easiest place to cut. The care wasn't negligent, but it wasn't as good as the brochures and sales pitch promised. Atmosphere - Grand Emerald is a low-key building. There's not much vibrancy in the building, staff, or activities. Wellbrooke of South Bend, where our father went after he needed skilled care, was much more energetic. Know what you're getting into. Some might like the calm at Grand Emerald, while others prefer the busier pace at Wellbrooke. It's a matter of preference. Administration - The people are very nice and respect your questions. The staff that interacts with residents is quite good. There might not be enough of them on weekends, but those who are there are really first-rate. I had a dispute over our dad's account after he went to Wellbrooke for skilled care. He left Grand Emerald in May, but I got a notice of a price increase. I had to call corporate headquarters in Chicago to sort it out. Paperwork isn't their strength, but that’s not why we chose the facility. Overall, it's a solid place. My brother and I were both away from South Bend, and it was nice to know our parents were safe, and we didn't have to worry about them. There are many areas for improvement, but the core mission of caring for seniors in a healthy environment mostly happens at Grand Emerald.

"Mixed Experience at Assisted Living Facility"
It's been okay—I'd rate them around 7.5 or 8 out of ten. I do have a couple of complaints: the food could be better—it's a bit bland with not much taste. Also, getting help can take a while, especially on weekends. They could use more staff. But overall, it's the least expensive place I looked at, and the facility is quite nice. My friend has a great room.
