"Friendly Staff and Activities Shine at Assisted Living Facility"
The staff is friendly, with lots of activities for residents. Menu variety is good. Costs are higher with memory care. Overall, happy mom's there.

"Small Memory Care Unit"
During our search for a Memory Care facility, we toured Rittenhouse Village at Portage. We loved this facility, but the Memory Care unit was very small. .

"Friendly staff, close-knit, but not for social people"
Rittenhouse has really friendly staff and a close-knit community, but Dad isn't very social.

"Lacks some care, but friendly. Food and activities enjoyed."
They were really nice. My family member seemed to enjoy the food and activities a lot. But they didn't give the care we expected and weren't checking on them regularly.

"Beware of Poor Care and Service at Rittenhouse"
They had no problem cashing the check of over $2500 bucks a month for their "care". But they messed up when they accidentally gave my old mom or dad another patient's strong painkillers, which landed them in the ER, completely scared. My parent has nasty arthritis, and showers are a struggle without help, help they were supposed to give. I often found my elderly mom or dad completely dirty, wearing a stained adult diaper. It was an uphill battle to find help for a cleanup when my parent was suffering from arthritis. Once, get this, a nurse told me to do it myself, like when my parent bathed me as a kid. So yes, I did end up giving a lot of showers to my parent. Nothing is more shocking than finding your dear old parent lying on the floor when you thought they were safe. Our family paid for these expensive adult diapers, and still, unless we wrote my parent's name on them, they would "vanish". The cleaning crew? Don't get me started. They barely clean the rooms. My advice - take a really hard look before you decide to place your elderly darling – one of the Greatest Generation – or your disabled loved ones in Rittenhouse. I'm a military vet, just like my dad and his dad before him. I haven't exaggerated a single word of this review, nor have I pretended to be someone else. Thankfully, my elderly parent has now moved out of Rittenhouse, and my family and I are sighing in relief.

"Mixed Feelings About Assisted Living Facility Meals"
My mom seems happy here and her room's always tidy. The place is clean overall. But the food's not great. My daughter didn't like her lunch.

"Clarify Assistance Needs: Ask Specific Questions During Interview"
During your interview, make sure to be very specific about your needs and the assistance you expect to receive. For example, when it comes to menus, if you have diabetes but struggle to speak up for yourself, the food options may not match what you were hoping for. Exercise classes should be organized based on people's abilities. For diabetic patients, it's crucial to move to control blood sugar levels. However, there isn't a more challenging class available for those who are capable. Despite the lovely appearance of the place and the friendly staff, it's essential to be clear about the type of assistance you need and advocate for it.

"Speaking on My Mixed Experience at the Portage Facility"
My experiences at the Portage memory care facility have been mixed. Generally, the care is okay but it seems like they're understaffed in the memory care section. Often, the staff seems rushed and doesn't give the residents enough time to eat. I've noticed that they don't pay enough attention or communicate well with the residents. Sometimes, the residents just sit idle while the nursing aides are on their phones. Also, they don't ask the residents if they need to go to the bathroom often enough, causing accidents. It's not always like this but it does depend on who's working that day. I also have a few other worries. The residents' bed linens aren't changed routinely and shower schedules aren't kept. Things like linens, towels, and clothes often go missing in the laundry, even though they're labeled. I wish there was better communication about upcoming activities that memory care patients and their families could participate in. I get a lot of emails from the Valparaiso Rittenhouse about memory care workshops and other events, but I've never received any info about those kinds of activities at the Portage facility. Overall, the Portage facility is decent but can definitely improve. Focusing on details would really boost the quality of care they provide.

"Mother’s Opinion"
My mom enjoys living at Rittenhouse. Her only issue is that the food doesn’t always meet her taste. Rittenhouse suits Mom, but food could improve.

"Great value but needs better cleanliness and housekeeping"
They're doing a great job, but there's room for improvement. The cleaning could be better. The value for what you get is amazing. The food is okay, about a four out of five. The main thing that needs work is the cleanliness the elevators and hallways are often dirty. They should improve housekeeping. I liked the overall value and how it looks.

"Mom found it for me"
I’m moving into "RITTENHOUSE SL" in Portage, NW Indiana this weekend, June 22. "A Place for Mom" told my son and me about it. Before that, I hadn’t found anything that met my wants and needs at a reasonable cost. This place has several things that made it an easy choice for me. I get my medical services at the VA, and it's within the area serviced by the villa. Plus, the clinic has bus service to their primary hospital for special services they don’t provide. I found all this and more through "A Place for Mom.

"Beautiful, but Lacks Encouragement for Activities"
They really need to take more initiative. There isn't much encouragement for people to join in activities. The place is really beautiful. The staff are really nice. Everything is really nice and they know what they are doing. The food tastes good. There's plenty of parking.

"Lovely Place Overall"
My mother-in-law has a nice room with a big bathroom and walk-in closet. Honestly, she’s smarter than most people here. She’s 97 and doesn’t want to cook, clean, or do laundry, so this place works for her. But she’s way ahead intellectually. I wish there was assisted living for people who are still sharp. The food isn’t great, but they try to make it interesting. The accommodations are nice, and I’m glad there’s healthcare available. She’s good at bingo and trivia. Overall, it’s a lovely place.

I’m really happy with Rittenhouse in Portage. It’s a clean and safe place for my mom. They offer many activities and outings for the seniors, which is great. I like visiting my mom there. The staff at Rittenhouse are polite, friendly, and helpful. The food looks healthy and tastes good, and they handle special diets and food allergies well.

"Convenient and Recommendable"
We haven’t tried other places, so we can’t really rate the ‘value.’ We also didn’t join in the ‘activities,’ so we can’t rate those either. But overall, Rittenhouse was convenient for us, and we’d recommend it to others in the area.
