"Assisted Living Facility Falls Short for Dementia Care"
My mom's things were moved in, and she spent a few hours a day for 2-3 days at Fairdale in Salina, Kansas. We wanted her to get used to a new place. She has dementia. She never spent a night there. After 3 days, we were surprised to learn Fairdale's administration hadn't completed the paperwork required for Mom to be there. So was she truly a resident? Instead of focusing on paperwork, the nurse became rude, and my mom's sundowning behavior, cursing and trying to leave, became the issue. They evaluate each person before accepting them, but Mom's primary nurse didn't even know she was there on one of the days. Another day, they thought Mom's prior caregiver would stay to help her. After discussing with the manager and primary nurse, they decided Mom wasn't appropriate for the facility and asked her to leave. The nurse was rude, and the manager made few comments. I felt the primary nurse and manager were not pleased with our interactions, which may be why Mom was asked to leave. I wasn't happy when they raised the cost of her care significantly because of her sundowning. So, in the end, we paid to move Mom in and then out, and approximately $2000 was kept by the facility. The district manager returned my call, but it was too late. Several families told us they were paying for private duty aides in addition to what they pay Brookdale. Both Salina facilities could use cheerier decor, but we liked the floor plans. Cost-wise, they were similar to other Salina assisted livings. It just wasn't the right place for Mom.

Overly Disappointed
"Facility Lacks Necessary Staff and Disrespects Residents"
The place is neat but the service is awful. They seldom check on our relative who's paying loads to live there... When a staff member promised us the door would be kept open and our family member will be checked frequently, we discovered the door closed and not one staff member had been there... even when they had fallen, and no one was there to help...once again. Getting any updates from the team is like pulling teeth. We have to ask numerous times and then they act like we are pestering them. It's obvious they don't have enough employees. The time it takes to get in and out of the establishment is absurd. I've noticed that my loved one isn't treated with the respect they deserve. They are not seen as an individual who has lived, loved, felt pain, gotten married, fought in a war, raised children, and has grandchildren. They are treated like an inconvenient task that is put at the end of the to-do list and forgotten. I guess it's just business?
