"Good staff, needs improvement on facility condition"
The director and staff are very good, but the facility itself needs some work. They have a remodel planned, which is needed, but it's still a good place. The staff communicates well with me and my family, usually by phone. The memory care unit is all on one floor, and I feel Homestead is safe and secure for my loved one. The only complaint is about the condition of the facility, but they are fixing it. Overall, I would recommend Homestead Estates of Wichita.

"Homestead Estates: Impressive Facilities, Cost Concerns"
We were really impressed with Homestead Estates—the staff was friendly, the apartments spacious, and the facilities clean. The only challenge was the cost. With a monthly payment of $3800 and Dad’s $3500 income, it’s tough. Still, we’d love to see him there if we could afford it.

"Affordable, Stair-Free Living at Chaucer Estates"
We picked Chaucer Estates because it’s affordable and all on one level—no stairs or elevators. They even have small foreplexes for independent living. Highly recommended!

"Mixed Experience at Assisted Living"
Make sure to visit often to get to know the staff caring for your loved one. My mom wasn't a fan of the food, but the community layout and room sizes are okay. They've got a pleasant outdoor courtyard for residents. However, staff turnover is high.

"Comfortable Assisted Living Option with Ground-Level Pet-Friendly Features"
Really nice place. Maybe assisted living would be better. Has a nice one-bedroom with a den. Everything is on ground level. It's pet friendly, but it's inconvenient to let the dog out since there's no back door.

"Assisted Living Facility Provides Great Value and Care Options"
Chaucer has been a great place for my mom's transition. We're thankful to A Place for Mom for guiding us here. The cost matches the quality she gets. Meals and activities are enjoyable, and the independent housing suits her perfectly now, with the option for more care as needed.

"Doubts Over Refund Delays and Unlogged Response Calls"
I'm still waiting for a refund check 60 days after his passing. And they don't keep records of response calls, so I have doubts about usefulness of those small cabins on the property.

"Declining Care at Assisted Living Facility"
My mom stayed here before rehab. After rehab, they refused her re-entry. Mom's nurse said she needed the same care level. But the new director, who never met Mom, disagreed. There's been lots of management changes, and it seems they're getting worse. I wouldn't suggest them.

"Unfair Treatment Forces Elderly Woman from Chaucer Assisted Living"
Initially, we had high hopes for Chaucer assisted living facility, but unfortunately, things have taken a nose-dive. There have been major shifts in their management team. The Executive Director, Marketing Director, and Director of Wellness (Nursing) all quit seemingly at once. We were fond of those folks. Now, there's a new crew that doesn't seem to know my Mom as well. When my Mom got sick with a viral infection, she was hospitalized. When it was time for her to be discharged, the hospital recommended she temporarily check into a skilled nursing facility, which she did. When it was time for her to go back to Chaucer, the facility needed to conduct a Care Assessment. This Assessment was arranged without my knowledge and I was only informed about it after it was done. The Director of Nursing brought along a nurse who supposedly knew my Mom's care routine, but I think family ought to be part of these assessments. I could’ve spoken up for her and her hearing problem. After the Assessment, the Director of Nursing called me to say, "based on the info she got from the hospital, Mom couldn't return to Chaucer cause of her medical needs". The hospital's nurse, who was present during the assessment, pointed out several times that the help my mother was getting at the hospital was the same stuff Chaucer had been helping her with. Her care needs were no different. The Director of Nursing at Chaucer also told me that because Mom couldn't walk to the dining room herself and since Chaucer didn’t have a night nurse, they wouldn’t allow her back. Isn't it the case that many residents need help walking to the dining room? And doesn't Chaucer have to have a night nurse to meet state regulations? Seems really suspicious that they are running without an RN at night. Bad things can occur at night with old people. A Physician Assistant at the hospital even told me, "this shouldn’t have happened and I’m trying to get Chaucer to rectify this". He was helping reduce her insulin intake, which was temporary adjusted high, so this wouldn’t be an issue. This was really unfair to my Mom and she didn’t deserve it! What a terrible way to treat someone when all my Mom wanted was to go back to Chaucer with people she knew. We feel like we were lied to, cheated, and denied a chance to be at my Mom's Care Assessment. Shame on you Chaucer! This caused a lot of stress for my Mom, who said she felt like dying. Plus, the stress of having to find a new place in a week was just draining and heartbreaking for us all. For the record, my Mom didn’t have to go to a nursing home as the DON suggested. She’s now at another Assisted Living Facility in Wichita. I would advise against this place!

"Terrible Experience at Chaucer Assisted Living Makes Mom's Situation Worse"
My mom really liked this place when she first moved in. She got along well with the staff and they genuinely liked her too. But a lot has changed since she got there two years ago. My mom got sick and was put in the hospital, and then she was moved to a special unit to get stronger. When she was ready to go back to Chaucer, she was back to the same care level as before she went to the hospital. That's what the PA and the folks at the special care facility said. But when the head nurse came with another nurse to see if my mom was ready to come back to Chaucer, things got bad. The head nurse barely knows my mom but the other nurse does. The nurse at the special care facility said that the nurse from Chaucer agreed everything was the same as before. But when it was time to leave the special care facility, I was told Chaucer wouldn't take her back because she couldn't walk to the dining room and they don't have night nurses. But there are other residents who can't walk to the dining room and they're supposed to have a nurse all the time. The staff at the special care facility tried to argue for my mom to come back but Chaucer said no. Even though they had no good reason to say no, they turned her away. So many people think this was a horrible way to treat my mom. I bet they still have people who need just as much help as my mom, if not more. I also wasn't told about this evaluation so I could argue for my mom. If I was there, I know things would have turned out differently. This whole situation made my mom sad. If you're thinking of putting someone you love here, think about it carefully. I'm not just some upset relative - I miss the old director, head nurse, and marketing manager who were there when my mom moved in. They had compassion. I'm not sure my mom would have been treated like this if they were still there. We had to find a new assisted living facility in just one week... and my mom was gladly accepted, even though Chaucer said she wasn't okay. Shame on you, Chaucer!

"Disarray and Disappointment at Chaucer Assisted Living"
My mom really liked this assisted living facility at first. She enjoyed being with the staff, and it seemed like most of them liked her too. But since she moved in about two years ago, a lot of the staff members have left. My mom got sick and had to go to the hospital. Afterward, she was moved to a skilled care unit to get stronger. When she was ready to go back to Chaucer, she was at the same level of care as before. I heard this from the physician assistant and the staff at the skilled care unit. However, when the Director of Nursing and a nurse came to evaluate my mom for her return to Chaucer, things went south. The Director of Nursing doesn’t really know my mom, but the nurse does. The nurse at the skilled care unit was part of the assessment and said that everything they were doing there was the same as before. Nothing changed. But when my mom was about to be discharged, they told me they couldn’t take her back. They said she couldn’t walk to the dining room, but they have lots of residents who can’t do that either. They also said they didn’t have a registered nurse at night. I don’t understand how that’s legal. The staff at the skilled care unit tried to argue that my mom should be allowed to return. That’s all she wanted. But it was a no-go. The physician assistant was adjusting her medication, which shouldn't have been an issue. It felt like they were rejecting my mom without a real reason. I bet I could find many residents at Chaucer who needed more care than my mom did. Lots of people thought it was awful how they treated my mom. They didn’t even tell me when the assessment was happening so that I could stand up for her. If I’d been there, maybe things would’ve turned out differently. It’s terrible how older people are treated when they still have their independence and want to live in a comfortable place. This whole situation has made my mom feel worse. I’d encourage anyone considering this place to seriously think about it first. I’m not saying this out of spite. I miss the old management team at Chaucer. Not long after they left, the place changed. We only had one week to find another assisted living facility, but we managed. Guess what, Chaucer? My mom is still capable of living in an assisted living home, not a nursing home like you suggested. And the new place accepted her without any hesitation. You really let us down, Chaucer!

"Inconsistent care and unjust treatment; choose wisely when selecting."
We really liked this place at first. But lots of workers leave... I wonder why? Maybe because of the big company? My mom liked it until recently. She got sick and went to the hospital. Then she went to a special unit for care. When she was ready to leave, the people there said she was ready to go home. Mom was happy and that's all she wanted. She called Chaucer home and liked the other people living there and most of the nurses. But then, things changed. The boss nurse and another nurse came to check on Mom's care. The nurse from the special unit was there too. The nurse from Chaucer who knew Mom said many times that Mom still needed the same care. But even though nothing changed, Chaucer wouldn't let Mom come back. The boss nurse said it was because Mom couldn't walk to the dining room. But there are lots of people there who can't walk there. Then they said it was because they don't have a nurse in the evenings. But how can they work without a nurse in the evenings??? Lots of people there need a lot of help. I've seen it. I think this was unfair to my Mom. Now, Mom says she wants to die. Thanks, Chaucer, for taking away the only thing my Mom wanted and making her so sad!! Oh, and by the way... Mom is in a different Assisted Living now, so Chaucer, you were wrong. My Mom doesn't need a Nursing Home!! Be careful when picking this place. They don't know what they're doing.

"Not Quite the Right Fit, But a Nice Tour"
My friend and I had a pleasant tour of this community. Everyone treated us kindly, and the staff we met was helpful and informative. The community looked nice and clean based on what we saw. Overall, the experience went well, but my friend didn’t feel it was the right fit for her.

"Great Place, but Needs More Activities!"
My mom passed away two months ago, and my 88-year-old dad is here, but he’s alone. The only thing I’d suggest is that they do more activities with the residents. Other than that, it’s a great place—the staff is fantastic, and they handle things promptly. To me, that’s what really matters. We’re very happy with everything.
