"Disturbed by Lack of Staff Interaction and Enervating Environment"

I'm really let down because the social worker and nursing director won't call me back about important matters related to my family member. I've left a ton of messages but still, no one returns my calls. This lack of communication makes me really uneasy about having my loved one stay at this place where I can't get a hold of anyone in charge. Moreover, while it looks like they involve their residents in social media, most of the time, those residents just sit idle all day. It seems like a pretty boring environment where the residents are not kept active. My relative also consistently mentions that the food quality is barely mediocre.

"Unreasonable treatment by an assisted living facility results in eviction"

We moved our mom into this place in 2016. The staff didn't offer her different meal choices if she didn't like what was given. According to the law, they should have, and kept a record of it. This happened from January 25 to February 1, 2017. I thought the food issue was fixed, but mom kept complaining about her meals. Turns out, not just the food, but her health was also being ignored. She had hurt her shoulder, but no one was taking care of it. None of the staff even knew about it and when we asked to see mom's medical records, they said we had to wait. Finally, she got an X-ray which didn't show any broken bones. But we wanted them to get her an MRI because her pain could be due to some other injury. The facility didn't allow it and we still weren't allowed to check her records. Over the next couple of days staff asked her weird questions like if she liked it there and if she wanted to be elsewhere. Mom also got a surprise visit from the facility's boss, putting more stress on her. Worse, my brother and I were told we were only allowed to visit under supervision. According to the law, they can only do that under very serious circumstances, none of which we fulfilled. The staff's actions felt like they were 'getting back at us' for asking about mom's food and health. Finally, they handed us empty medical forms and told us mom was getting evicted! So, if you're looking to admit a loved one here, think twice. Especially, if they have dementia or alzheimer's because they won't be able to tell you what's wrong. And if you complain, you might just be asked to move your loved one out.

"Beware: The Homeplace at Midway May Evict Complaining Family Members"

We sent our mom to live there in April 2016. The assistants didn't let her choose an alternative meal if she didn't want the food that was given to her that day. By law, if menu changes have to happen, they must offer equal nutrition and keep records of it all. If a patient doesn't want the food, they need to offer a nutritious switch. This happened between Jan. 25 - Feb. 1, 2017. I thought the food problem was resolved but our mom kept telling us she didn't like the food and was never given a choice. I was wrong! The food problem was worse and our mom's right shoulder had been hurt somehow. She couldn't move it without lots of pain. She first told me that her shoulder was hurt on January 17, 2017. I thought the Nurses had been keeping an eye on it and making notes. I was wrong! No one at the meeting even knew about our mom's shoulder and we were told to wait 1-2 days to see her notes. I agreed. Jan. 25, 6:00 PM - she finally got an X-Ray at 9:00 PM. Fortunately, there were no broken bones, but we had to ask them to send her for an MRI to see more detail. I asked for this on Jan. 26th. I was denied again and not allowed to see any of her records. Jan. 26, 10:30 AM - two Homeplace workers came to Mom's room asking her questions like, "Do you like it here?" "Would you rather be somewhere else?" Jan. 26, 6:00 PM - my brother and I went to see the head nurse. We were denied for a third time when we asked to see any documentation on our mom. Jan. 27, 2:00 PM - The Homeplace boss said my brother and I could only make monitored visits from then on and asked for a meeting on Feb. 1 at 5:00 PM. I agreed. They can only do monitored visits for a few reasons by law-- like if a visitor broke the law or made a resident feel unsafe. My brother and I didn't do any of these things. It looks like they only did this because we asked too many questions. Feb. 1, 5:00 PM - They said we scared their staff and accused us of asking for home addresses. We didn't. They also gave us a packet of empty medical records and said they're kicking our mom out! So, here's my advice: If you have a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer's, this is a great place to send them because they won't remember anything bad. But if you or a family member ever complain, start looking for a new nursing home because they'll find a way to kick you out.
