"Assisted Living Facility Review: Mixed Experience, Needs Improvement"
Moving in during Christmas weekend was challenging, lacking needed attention. Although we appreciate the place's appearance and location, there are staffing issues, common to many places. Mom's assessment placed her in memory care, aiming for better medical care, but it didn't meet expectations for social stimulation. Suggestions to move her to assisted living with additional aid were perplexing given the already high cost. Medical needs were not properly attended to, leading to bedsores and other issues. Communication regarding her medication and care was inconsistent. The environment in memory care lacked social engagement, with no proactive efforts from management. Unlocking mom's door without permission was a concerning safety issue. It took considerable effort to address concerns and initiate necessary evaluations and treatments. Despite some staff members being understanding and caring, overall, the facility failed to meet mom's needs adequately.

"Great Care for Mom"
Brookdale has been great for my mom. They’re attentive, especially with her memory loss. Staff shortages exist, but overall care is good. Your experience depends on your involvement. I visit often and appreciate their inclusion of memory care residents in activities.

"Brookdale: Nice Place, Pricey Amenities"
We toured Brookdale, and it’s nice. The place is beautiful but expensive. They followed up after our visit to see where we’d put our loved one. They offer many amenities, although some our loved one wouldn’t use.

"Friendly Staff and Dietary Accommodations"
It’s a really nice place, and I’d suggest it to others for their loved ones. The staff are excellent at discussing concerns, questions, or updates about my family member’s needs. Plus, they’re considerate of dietary restrictions.”

"Friendly Assisted Living with Small Food Portions"
We think this place needs more staff, but we’d still recommend it to anyone. Before COVID, they had lots of activities like day trips, board games, and movie nights. Our only complaint is that the food portions are small due to dietary restrictions. For instance, our loved one got just a slice of pizza for lunch.

"Smooth transition, great care, and engaging amenities at Brookdale Olney!"
We’ve had a smooth transition for my aunt. I’m so glad we found a place that meets her needs and provides the care she deserves. Brookdale Olney seems to be a perfect fit. Her room, the food, and the social activities have been great. Even during COVID lockdowns, she’s been able to thrive with their excellent care. The outside is beautifully landscaped, and the amenities keep her engaged. Overall, we’re very happy with our choice.

"Mixed Experience: Assisted Living Review"
I had to quickly move my brother to The Residence for a short stay. He got sick fast, so we didn't explore other options. The places I checked out seemed similar, but I picked Residence because it felt more suited for men and had a good orientation program. His time there was chaotic due to health issues. The staff were supportive, and other residents seemed happy. Although my brother couldn't join activities, there seemed to be a variety, including a theater with a popcorn machine. Our situation was unusual, so I'm not sure if our problems were normal. Maybe a nursing home would've been better, but we didn't have time to explore. Staff tried their best, but response times were slow at times. Accessing the building after 6:30 was difficult. I often had to wait a long time for someone to answer the phone to let me in. They were helpful when my brother arrived, but communication could've been smoother. Overall, The Residence on Greenway might've been better in different circumstances, but my brother might've enjoyed it.

"Great Assisted Living Facility with Minor Availability and Cost Issues"
I toured this place for my mom and loved what I saw. They keep the building clean and bedrooms tidy. Their meal plan is good, and they offer plenty of activities. But, they didn't have a spot open right away, and it's a bit pricier than another place we checked out.

"A Great Community, My Father Is Doing Well Here"
This place is great for my father. The community is well-kept, and his room and the facility are always clean when I visit. The staff is wonderful, always helpful and attentive. There are plenty of activities for the residents to enjoy. The meals are made from scratch, so the food is really good. You can tell it's a good place, and I would highly recommend it.

"Size And Staffing Concerns Limit Quality Weekend Care"
Our experience at this place wasn't great. They simply couldn't give my wife the type of care she required. On weekdays, things seemed mostly okay, but on weekends, they were short-staffed. That's when she had a number of falls. The place is large, and I don't believe they can properly look after so many people. The employees were kind and made a good effort, but they still couldn't give her what she needed.

"Mixed feelings about Solana Olney; smooth process, lacking medical care."
I like how The Solana Olney talks straight to us. They have activities from morning till dinner, but not much after that. The medical care is missing something; I wish they had a full-time physician's assistant. Sometimes residents need an ambulance, which worries me. They do have a full-time nurse, but she looks after a bunch of other places too. The food isn't great; my mom says it stinks, and they don't serve enough veggies. I wish they'd offer more healthy options. The paperwork and moving in went really smoothly. The staff even helped set up the room. That part was excellent.

"Wouldn't Tell Anyone to go to this Facility"
This place is not worth it. They can't even handle the tough parts of their job. For example, they asked my 94-year-old mom to leave because she gave them a hard time when they'd bathe her - and she's in a wheelchair! They told us to hire a full-time aide, and that would cost us another $4,000 a month. What's the point of paying them for her care if we also have to hire an aide? When I said no, they told her she had to pack it up.

"Poor Dementia Care and Unfriendly Treatment at Assisted Living"
This assisted living place looks nice but they really dropped the ball on caring for people with dementia, like my mom. She's in a wheelchair and can't move herself around but they said she was a threat to others and told me to hire help 8 hours a day. What am I paying them for? They also said I should take her out in 30 days. They didn't even talk to me face-to-face, just called me on the phone. Several times, I visited and my mom was shut in her room. They just left her there.

"Mixed Experience at Solana: Great Care but Administrative Hassles"
The nursing team was top-notch, the meals were tasty, and the activities were fun. My brother stayed there for a month after his hospital visit. He really enjoyed the movies and daytime events. He's going to miss it. However, dealing with the oxygen supply was a hassle. I had to arrange for more portable units because Solana couldn't seem to manage it. Also, the hospital provided a month's worth of medication, but then Dr. Dwan ordered more on August 4. From August 13 to September 5, 2015, Solana sent a fax to Omnicare saying my brother was on leave, and even more medication was ordered. But the meds couldn't be returned. I had to call the pharmacy and explain that he never went on leave and only needed a month's supply. They knew he was leaving at the end of August. It was a big mess that I had to sort out. He needs assistance with these things. The reference was just okay. He's too young for Medicare. This place is all out-of-pocket; they don't accept insurance for stays.

"Solid Choice for Assisted Living"
My mom's been there since February. It was tough for her, finding out she had to go only a few days before. But Solana's staff is super welcoming, friendly, and helpful. They know everyone's name and keep an eye out for who needs help. I trust they'll take good care of my mom. It's not flawless, but neither was the care I could provide at home. It's been hard, but it was the right decision for all of us. I've already suggested Solana to friends and family.

"Unexpected Fees: Assisted Living's Hidden Costs"
This place has a fee that seems low at first, but then they add on more charges for stuff you might not even want or need. And they don't ask you about it, they just bill you. Also, because it's so big, it's hard for the staff to take care of everyone all the time.

"Nice Facility, But Not Ideal for Grandma's Needs"
The facility is good, but it's not the best fit for Grandma due to a few reasons: 1) Grandma has a high risk of falling and their rule is to take residents to the hospital after every fall, even if the injury is small, 2) The memory care section is too big and it could be hard for Grandma to get help when she needs it because she can't push buttons or pull cords, and 3) They have strict visiting hours (you can't visit her at night).

"Unhappy With Solana Olney Facilities"
I'm shifting my 98-year-old mom from Solana Olney to a new place. Honestly, I wasn't happy with Solana Olney. The staff didn't seem to know their job too well. For starters, they put my mom on the same floor as folks who have Alzheimer's and memory problems; she doesn't have these issues. When I asked why, they said she'd failed a few memory quizzes about things like dates and times. They suggested she'd be less "bothersome" to others on this floor. That was rather offensive to us since my mom only needed standard resident care. A lot of the staff struggle with English, which made it hard to communicate mom's real needs. Once, a worker rang me up super early about a blister on mom's foot, but the call was quite confusing due to language differences. There aren't a lot of different things to do there, and the few that are there don't really fit older folks (like painting nails or playing with dolls). There weren't many religious services or any planned activities. The food wasn't good either. To me, the cost was too high for the care level and living conditions. So, we're moving her to Emeritus at Sterling in Virginia.

"Beauty, Cleanliness, but Some Issues"
This place looks really nice, and mostly it's kept pretty clean. The people who work here are mostly friendly. But the food isn't that great, and they don't have a lot of different options. Sometimes they mix up our laundry or mess up our clothes. It seems like they need more staff at certain times of the day, but then there are too many at other times. We've had some problems since we moved in, but maybe they're just because of our situation.

"Avoid The Solana Olney, Beautiful but Deeply Flawed Community"
My dad lived at The Solana Olney for nearly a year. The place looks nice but has serious construction problems. For instance, while my dad was there, he didn't have heat or AC. They've been trying to fix the heat for 2 years and still haven't. They offered us a $500 discount for the trouble but that didn't cover my dad's hospital bill when he got pneumonia during the winter of 2013/2014. They brag about having a 4-star dining experience, but I've seen hot dogs and sloppy fish sandwiches on their menu. That's definitely not 4-star. When they serve good food, it's usually bland and tasteless. The care provided is essentially nonexistent. You can ask to see their latest license survey, which is public information and offers details about any community you're interested in. There are countless major care problems in this community. The head nurse is always absent and doesn't return calls. When you do manage to catch her, she doesn't take your concerns seriously, and the nursing staff are prohibited from talking directly to you or reporting any resident issues. Lots of families, including mine, were always uncertain about the monthly bill. The Solana first provides two prices, one for the room and another for care, both determined by the head nurse after meeting your family member. You sign an agreement based on those numbers. However, when receiving your first bill 60-90 days later, the care fees have increased significantly. Two families have mentioned their care costs doubling without any warning or reason for the increase. Calls to the head nurse about this are ignored. The Solana Olney sure is pretty, but I would strongly advise keeping on searching. You'll deeply regret having your loved one move into this community until they can sort out their issues.

"Assisted Living Facility Trades Care for Profits"
This place uses very misleading sales tactics. They market the rooms by showing off the fancy facility. However, they hide all the important negative details. They don't share that the residents are basically trapped with very personal freedom. If the residents want to socialize, they're charged extra. There have been several severe injuries due to lack of adequate care. The only changes they make are to limit the residents' freedom even more.

"Brookdale Corp's Unfair Age Restriction Leaves Visitors Disappointed"
Recently, Brookdale Corp made a random, unfair choice to not allow anyone under the age of 62. Admitted that picking the age of 62 was random. The reasons don't make sense: a) they believe someone younger with dementia may not fit in socially with the older residents, because they might have different tastes in music, culture, and physical abilities and b) They have safety concerns about taking care of the physical/mental behavior issues of a more active resident. I was really let down to find this out, especially after one of their marketers seriously tried to get my attention and urge me to visit, but sadly, they didn't even know about the company rule of not allowing people under 62.

"Advocate for quality care: Research before choosing assisted living."
Recently checked the county/state report. The place is flashy, but not flawless. Although the price is appealing, quality matches cost. Overall, it's okay, but check nursing skills carefully. Unsure if memory care suits mildly or moderately dependent residents. Few activities; caregivers lack initiative. Advocates needed for residents' placement. Thorough assessments crucial.
