"Lack of trained staff and care in assisted living facility"

The staff at this assisted living facility were genuinely kind, but it's clear they weren't properly trained to care for patients. They didn't understand the importance of keeping things clean and preventing health issues. The mental well-being of patients also didn't seem to be a big concern for them. They hardly helped her out of bed, even though she could handle standing and turning with some help. As a former ICU nurse, I can confidently say they definitely need more training to professionalize their care-giving services. They also didn't take the time to ensure that she was offered warm food, help with her tray, or certain likes and dislikes - despite me providing some food options that could be easily heated up. They assured me they could handle her care, which was really heartbreaking because she was such a sweet lady and easy to look after. It deeply saddens me to remember how things turned out. There were several times I thought of reporting them, but I kept hoping they'd improve and get their act together.

"Friendly, helpful staff; smooth move-in; recommended"

The staff is friendly, patient, caring, and helpful. Housekeeping cleans weekly and responds promptly. Maintenance is quick. Move-in was smooth; staff aids new residents. Recommended.

"Mixed Experience at Assisted Living Facility"

Memory care ranks higher than assisted living. Staff varies widely. Administration unfriendly post-residency. Medication issues and honesty concerns. Slow response for wheelchair-bound residents. Short-staffed. Poor communication. Bland food. Diverse resident population. Overall care lacking.

"A Caring, Homey Choice"

We’ve had a great time at Gull Creek. The staff really cares about my family member, making sure they feel comfortable and heard. [Name removed] does an amazing job with activities, keeping everyone engaged. They’ve spruced up the garden and sitting area, and they’re upgrading other parts of the community too. It feels like a safe, beautiful home—not an institution. That’s why we picked Gull Creek!

"Understaffed, Untrained, and Mediocre Food Mixed Experience"

The people who work there are nice and they try their best. But sometimes they miss things because there aren't enough staff members. The staff seem like they haven't been trained properly for some tasks. Instead of dining staff, nurses have to bring trays to residents. The food isn't good, and they don't help with food allergies.

"Mixed feelings about assisted living in Berlin, MD"

The people living there are nice and easy to befriend. The staff is usually friendly and accommodating. Right now, though, they don’t have enough helpers. Sometimes my mom likes the food, sometimes not so much, but it's not a big deal. I haven't tried it myself. The place itself is big and beautiful with spacious rooms, some even have a terrace. The cost seems reasonable, and it's in a quiet neighborhood with lovely grounds. They're even adding a garden! The new recreation director is awesome and inclusive. There have been some changes in management, but they're trying hard to fix things. Berlin, MD is a great spot! It’s close to cool places like Ocean City and nature reserves with wild ponies. It's a bit of a drive to the beach, but not too bad. I hope they can sort out their staffing issues, seems like a common problem everywhere.

"Confusing Layout and Limited Facility"

Gull Creek's place is kinda small and not arranged nicely. The boss lady is nice though, she's checked in on me a bunch. She seems like she's really into it. But the building itself is weird. It's like someone kept adding rooms without thinking. I got lost in there, so I bet it's even harder for someone with memory issues.

"Great Community, Just Too Far"

This community was my second choice. If it was closer, I would have taken her there. It was very similar to another place we were looking at. I just needed it to be closer for family visits.

"Nice place, too far from family"

This was a nice community, but it was too far from family.

"Moderate assisted living, consider elsewhere if no memory care needed."

When we visited, the place seemed okay. Clean, nice apartments. But if no memory care needed, we'd look elsewhere.

"Friendly Assisted Living with Adequate Rooms"

We picked Gull Creek because everyone we met was super friendly. They’ve made changes to the office staff, but the regular staff is great. The room sizes are just right for our needs. It’d be nice if they took residents outside more while the weather’s good. Overall, I’d totally recommend them.

"Assisted Living Facility Needs Improvement"

This place had some problems with staff and care quality. They didn't communicate until we said we were leaving. I only saw the director after more than 90 days. The food was sometimes good, sometimes not. Some staff members were rude. The main office listened and helped solve some problems.

"Nice place, but too far from the beach"

This place seems really nice. But it's too far from the beach. On the map, it looks close, but it isn't. If I stay around here (Eastern Shore of Maryland), I want to be near the beach. I'll keep looking, but thanks for setting this up. I appreciate your help.

"Brackets"

My folks moved to Gull Creek in March 2017. It was one of five assisted living centers we visited before making our choice. We based our decision on quite a few factors, such as the happiness of the residents and their families, how many people were living there, how long the staff tended to stay, whether the staff seemed happy, and the center's reputation. No one had lodged any complaints about Gull Creek at the time, and we thought it was a great place. However, things took a turn for the worse in 2018 when Gardant Management took over. The quality of the food started to decline, and when residents and their families complained, the management didn't seem to care. They organized a few meetings to discuss the issue, but nothing substantial came out of them. The food remained terrible, which is a big problem since many residents have health conditions like heart disease and diabetes that require a good diet. Another worrisome issue was a high staff turnover. From 2017-2020, the center saw three different Directors of Nursing, Activity Directors, Marketing Directors, and more. The average time these key players would stay was only about a year and a half. The latest news is they're looking for a new delegating nurse. Things got even worse when Etros, a firm specializing in helping failing senior living centers, advised the center to cut staff hours. The remaining staff was overworked and unable to carry out their responsibilities effectively. They gave medications at the wrong times and even to the wrong residents. They also could not keep the living spaces clea,n and the residents' laundry piled up. In 2017, there were zero complaints about Gull Creek. Things changed in 2018, and there have been 24 complaints since then. These included mistakes in medication, residents suffering from falls, lack of essential records and reports, and more such negligence. And when asked about any complaints after the February meeting, the management only admitted to one even though state records showed seven more. With so many troubles, it's no surprise Gull Creek has lost many residents, staff, and its good reputation. It's a real pity because some of the employees genuinely care for the residents and treat them like family. There's also one manager who's pretty amazing. However, even they can't stop the place from falling.' : "Gull Creek Assisted Living: From Promising to Disappointing

"Negligent Care and Unethical Billing at Gull Creek"

My mother stayed at Gull Creek from October 2019 till March 2020, and during that time, there were countless issues. The major problem was with the nursing staff and the disappointing quality of care offered. They gave her a particular medication that her doctor specifically said should only be taken when necessary every day for two months. Even though we were told at the start that we could use any pharmacy for her medication, the policy was later changed to only allow use of Apple Pharmacy or a prepackaged pharmacy, which I can't remember the name of, causing the price of one of her medications to increase from $5 with Express Scripts to over $80. Several undiagnosed urinary tract infections that we paid for AZO strips for were another problem. I brought up her issues with hallucinations to the head nurse, B..., who dismissed it as being likely caused by the medicine. There were constant falls and rather than suggesting we get various medical evaluations, they took her walker away and confined her to a wheelchair without recommending any medical evaluations. She suddenly lost the ability to walk in February and B... mentioned they originally thought she was pretending. When I came back to town in March, I took her to a number of doctors to figure out what was wrong and at a meeting with me and her boss, V...., B... claimed she had set the appointments. This wasn't true as I scheduled appointments with a cardiologist, a neurologist, an orthopedic surgeon, and a general practitioner myself. B... only advice was that if my mom continued falling, she wouldn't be able to stay at Gull Creek as they couldn't handle the liability and weren't staffed for two-person assistance. The day my mom fell while stepping out of a car and even while she was crying out from pain on the ground, B... didn't offer to help but instead said she wouldn't be able to stay. She was sent to a rehab center where she was rushed to the ER for yet another undiagnosed urinary tract infection. I have more complaints but what I've provided should be enough to show why I don't recommend Gull Creek for anyone's loved ones. The poor nursing care, awful food, and unethical business practices put me off. Unexpected additional charges surfaced including a $4000 facility charge and my mother’s rent increasing by $900 despite being told that her level of care was covered in her monthly rate. There were more charges even after my mother was moved to rehab. The only good thing was the staff who handled the activities, [names removed], who showed real care for my mother.

"Disappointing Experience at Gull Creek Assisted Living Facility"

My mom lives at Gull Creek and has been there for a few years. But the new company running things from Chicago made some changes that aren't good. The food isn't good at all, lots of people are leaving their jobs, and the people in charge aren't doing a good job. They cut back on how much the staff works, so now the care for the residents isn't so good.

"Glowing Faces, Happy Residents"

Everybody in this community is so happy. We are thrilled with the services and care that mom is receiving. Everyone is just so nice and caring. The food is great and mom has actually gained weight, which is what we wanted. Mom is also getting back to her old self.

"Smooth Transition to Assisted Living"

My mom's getting used to it here. At first, her apartment wasn't completely ready, but they fixed it up. There are plenty of activities for her when she wants to join in. She enjoys the desserts and thinks the meals are alright. This place is closest to me, and we're thankful for A Place For Mom's assistance.

"A Welcoming Home!"

The staff at Gull Creek is awesome! The food tastes good, and they maintain a clean, well-cared-for community. Plus, there are plenty of fun activities to enjoy, and they even have a bus for store trips.

"Gull Creek is the Place to Be"

My dad is there now, and it has been an excellent experience. The best part is I know my dad is safe, getting his medicine on time, and having people looking out for him. The staff in every area has been great to work with, and dad likes that he can get breakfast anytime during the day. I'm glad I made the phone call.
