" A Cozy Assisted Living Experience"
I recently visited an assisted living facility, and I'd like to share my observations. Overall, the place had a comfy, homey atmosphere. However, there were a few areas that needed attention. Exterior: The outside of the facility required some sprucing up. The paint was peeling, and the overall appearance could use improvement. Interior: Inside, the facility needed updating. The care manager seemed friendly, but the decor and amenities could benefit from modernization. There were plenty of comfy overstuffed sofas and recliners, but beyond watching cable TV, I didn't see many activities. Perhaps they could consider adding more engaging options, like coffee gatherings in the kitchen. Location: The facility is nestled in the woods, further west on West Jolly Acres than the Conastone substation. The road leading there is initially paved but turns into a hard-packed gravel road after the substation. The state keeps it open due to the nearby Conastone Electric substation and Sunshine Acres. It's a serene spot away from traffic and sirens, with views of the woods and deer. Care and Services: The caregivers do grocery shopping at two stores in Stewartstown, PA, about 5 miles away. This flexibility allows them to adjust food preferences and handle supply issues directly. Laundry is done daily and neatly put away for residents. There may be an outside rear deck for bird watching, and there's a ramp for easy entry. Community Feel: For those accustomed to country living or farm life, this place would be a good fit. It lacks the sterile feeling of a hospital or nursing home and instead feels very homey. No unpleasant odors, and most areas have carpeting. It's also conveniently close to York or Upper Chesapeake Hospital, with two nearby EMT firehouses. Considerations: My only concern was the lack of activities for residents. If your loved one suffers from depression, this might be something to discuss with the staff. The population here is predominantly elderly and Caucasian, so keep that in mind.

"Sunshine Acres: Clean, Friendly, and Personal Care"
We really like Sunshine Acres so far. The inside is very clean when we visit. We enjoy the outdoor visits because it’s in a nice, woodsy area. The staff we’ve met are all very nice. The location is great for our family, and we like that it’s a smaller community. It feels like our loved one gets more personal attention.

"Decent Facility with Room for Improvement"
The place looks a bit worn and not so new. However, it’s really tidy. The surroundings are pretty. They have more staff than many big places, with a 2:10 staff-to-resident ratio. The two ladies we met there were super kind and welcoming. It was obvious that the folks living there were fond of one staff member especially. The people staying there seem to have more trouble remembering things than my parent does, so it doesn’t seem like the right place for them. Considering what people pay to stay here, you’d think the owner could splash on some new paint and tidy up the clutter outside the living spaces.

"Small, Clean Facility with Room for Improvement"
The facility seems a bit worn out and not so appealing. However, it's kept really tidy. It's located in a lovely area. The staff-to-resident ratio is 2:10, which is better than many larger places. We met two women who were very kind and welcoming. It was clear that the residents were fond of one staff member in particular. The residents seemed to be less aware than my parent, so it didn't seem like the right place for them. Considering the fees these families are paying, I believe the owner could afford to freshen up the place with a new coat of paint and remove the clutter that's lying around (not in the residents' areas, but next to the outbuildings).
