"Mixed feelings: Great staff but lacking in care due to understaffing"

The workers were nice, but there weren't enough of them to give proper care. This made things slow, especially on weekends. It seemed like the bosses were trying to save money by not hiring more help. I wouldn't suggest this place for someone who needs a lot of assistance. It might be okay for someone who only needs a little.

"Quality Decline in Assisted Living Facilities"

Certainly! Here's the revised review in 8th-grade level American English: The cottages are nice, but there's a lot of turnover. Rates went up, and staff is lacking. Didn't feel like they cared about my grandparents.

"Community, Cleanliness, and Happy Residents"

Overall, it was a positive experience. My family member struggles with bathroom cleanliness, so I've noticed untidy bathrooms during my visits. The staff is responsive when informed. We chose this facility for its strong sense of community, resident interactions, and inviting layout. The food is excellent, and there are many happy people here.

"Happy resident, recommend to families. A Place For Mom approved."

She is really happy and comfortable at this facility. From what we've seen, we would suggest this community to other families. Dealing with A Place For Mom was great too.

"Mom Adjusts Well, Recommends Birchwoods Despite COVID Lockdown"

We picked Birchwoods at Canco because my mom liked having a small kitchen in her room. It's tough to judge right now because they are in lockdown due to COVID, but that's not their fault. She's only been here a few months, but she seems to be adjusting well. Overall, we would recommend the place to others.

"Good facility, but waiting for nurse visit."

This is a good facility. The staff is nice. My only concern is that I've been asking for a nurse practitioner to check on my loved one for specific concerns. It's been 6 weeks, and we're still waiting. The meals seem okay, and the facility is very clean. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

"Mixed Feelings about Assisted Living Facility"

I think it's important to remind the staff to keep your loved one's room tidy and make sure housekeeping stays on track. The place is nice for residents. The staff does a good job talking to families, but they're not quick to reply to messages.

"Birchwoods tour: just okay, nothing impressive"

I toured Birchwoods, and it was just okay. Nothing impressive stood out to me about the community.

"Huge Disappointment with Birchwoods Assisted Living Facility"

I wanted my mom to stay at Birchwoods for a month while I traveled abroad. I had to take her out after only two weeks. They didn't give me back any money, even though they let another person use the room I had already paid for. I can't believe they wouldn't refund the rest of the payment or give me back my security deposit. The people living there weren't nice at all. My mom tried to join them at lunch, but they told her she couldn't sit at their table. It felt like they were acting like teens in school. The food they served was terrible. They promised my mom they would help her make friends, but that didn't happen. The management seemed friendly, but they never did what they said they would. Before my mom moved in, I had brought in some pricey sheets. When we arrived, they were gone. The sheets they gave her to replace mine were not the same quality. We left some items in her room, but didn't get all of them back. I guess that's partly on me since my family cleaned out the room and they didn't realize some items belonged to her. However, I'm not happy that some things were returned and some weren't. Overall, Birchwoods was a huge letdown.

"Friendly staff, limited assistance, normal meals, varied activities."

The staff here is great, but they need more help. The community helps my loved one with getting out of bed, managing medication, and getting back into bed. Meals are like cafeteria food, and there are fun activities like bingo and outside entertainment for residents to enjoy.

"Assisted Living Facility Review: New Ownership Brings Excellence Amid Staffing Challenges"

The assisted living facility recently changed ownership. The nursing director is praised for excellence. However, staffing remains a significant concern. While the staff is commendable, there is a persistent shortage common among local facilities. This shortage sometimes leaves residents, like my loved one, walking to meals alone due to insufficient assistance. Despite these challenges, the facility maintains cleanliness and overall quality. Staffing levels remain our primary concern.

"Family Member Feels Relieved and Happy with Birchwoods"

My family and I visited several places around Portland. Birchwoods was the friendliest, most informative, and accommodating. My mom is moving in this month. We all feel so relieved and happy.

"Promising Assisted Living Facility Tour Impressed Me and My Mother"

I went on a tour recently, and I was super impressed! I felt good the whole time I was there. Everyone seemed really happy. I learned a lot of useful stuff. I'm just starting to look for the perfect place for my mom, and I think I found it.

"A cozy and welcoming place with friendly staff."

I really like Birchwoods because it feels like home and it's super comfy. The people who work there are always nice and ready to lend a hand. It's just too bad when one grumpy employee spreads lies and brings everyone down.

"Disappointing Experience at Birchwood Of Canco"

We took a trip to Maine to visit a family member at Birchwood Of Canco. We're happy we did, because that place sure isn't what it used to be. Try to reach a manager by calling in the daytime and you'll find no one there. Hope to talk to a nurse? Best of luck. Where are the employees? Our visit consisted of us ringing our family member's bell for assistance. We ended up waiting way too long in their room until someone finally showed up, flustered and out of breath. We sparked a conversation and plainly asked about their training. The response we got was a sincere chuckle, letting us know there's no formal training. New workers just shadow an untrained coworker for some days before they're left on their own. We also stayed for a meal and to be honest, we weren't thrilled. We struck up a conversation with another resident's daughter and her dad. They told us about the ever-changing staff and how the care for her dad didn't seem like a top priority. We both agreed that the amount of money spent wasn't adding up to the quality of care being offered. Funnily enough, we had this conversation before our meal arrived. The food was further proof of poor service. The same individual who arrived in the room earlier was now serving our meal, clearly just as untrained as before. Only the fresh baked bread was a redeeming factor. We did meet the housekeeper, who was genuinely the only person who greeted us with a smile. At least the room was clean, but we forgot to ask for her name. There's a clear issue at this place and hopefully, someone takes care of it soon. Until then, we're suggesting having our loved one moved.

"Shocked by Mom's Neglect at Assisted Living Centre"

I was really upset when I visited my mom today and found her sitting in her own waste (both on her sheets and the carpet by her bed). Can you believe that?

"Rent paid, but are residents' basic needs being met?"

The 2016 management team doesn't seem bothered about the welfare of residents. Fridges in dwellings ought to be cleaned, particularly concerning residents grappling with memory challenges! Proper care must be ensured: hair grooming, toe nail cutting, and providing daily essentials (toothpaste, toothbrush, skin cream, and meeting incontinence needs!) These are basic needs for seniors, after all. Just because rent payments are happening, doesn't necessarily mean that those in charge of finances are ensuring their parents are well-cared for.

"More Cottages Needed in Assisted Living Facilities"

I think they need to build more cottages because they only had a few.

"Very Kind and Helpful"

Birchwood at Canco seems to have fewer staff members than needed. The food isn't great, and my mom has complained about it a couple of times. However, they've been very kind and helpful overall. Improvements could be made in the food quality and staffing levels. They went out of their way to help us get settled and have been attentive to my mom's needs. Despite the challenges, they do their best with the staff they have.

"Top-notch living place"

I think Birchwood at Canco is doing well. It looks nice, and the rooms are better and cheaper than others I saw. The director is super friendly and easy to deal with.

"Attentive Staff, But Dietary Needs Sometimes Ignored"

I'm super happy with the place! The people there pay a lot of attention, which is nice. Even though there are many people living there, they really seem to care about each person. The only downside is they sometimes mess up with special diets. The food is alright, but they don't always stick to the diets we ask for.

"Top-Notch Care in Welcoming Community"

My family member didn't stay long, but I was impressed. The place felt friendly. Cindy, who manages it, was super nice and helpful.

"Assisted living like a hotel, with room for improvement"

This place is really clean, bright, and cheerful. It's simple for people with disabilities to move around. But, the activities room was kind of boring. There are comfy spots to sit and read. It looks just like a hotel. The food looked good too.

"Facility offers assistance but lacks security for Alzheimer's patients."

This place is pretty good. They have help for old folks and those with Alzheimer's. But it's not super safe, so I decided not to go.
