American House Jenison

"Helpful staff and friendly residents"
The staff was very helpful. She did a great job talking to my mom when she was getting used to moving out of her home. We are still adjusting, but everyone we meet has been nice and helpful. The other residents have been great too.

"Safety Concerns: Not Recommended Assisted Living Facility, Poor Management Decisions"
I had my mom at American House in Jenison for over 4 years. Lately, the big bosses there made some choices that weren't good for residents, especially those in memory care. They decided to have fewer staff because there weren't as many people living there. Now, they say there can only be 1 person to give out medicine and 1 helper on each shift in both the regular and memory care buildings. This isn't safe, especially for those in memory care who need help from two people sometimes. And when that happens, there's nobody else around to watch out for other residents who might fall or try to leave, or who might have trouble as the day goes on. After they made this rule, something bad happened. The local caregivers were nice and caring, but I moved my mom to another place and I can't tell anyone to go to American House right now.

"Meal Limitations Impact Choice"
The tour at American House Jenison was pleasant. The only downside was that my loved one wasn’t fond of the two daily meals. As a result, we chose another community.

"Friendly Staff and Minor Misconception at American House Jenison"
The staff has been awesome. They’re super friendly and always ready to help. The only thing that surprised me was that I thought assisted living would involve more assistance with things my loved one doesn’t want to do, like laundry and bathing. But overall, things are going smoothly, and I’d recommend American House Jenison to others.

"Needs Better Talking with Families and Staff"
COMMUNICATION is key, and that’s why I’m shouting it out. The folks running this place should really get better at talking to the families of the people living here and also between the staff themselves.

"Friendly Staff, Unappetizing Food"
The staff is friendly, but the food is even worse than cafeteria meals. It's definitely not prepared by a chef.

"Avoid American House: Bed Bug Infestation Alert"
American House has had bed bugs for more than 6 months. All they do is spray, but they won't fumigate because they don't want to spend money. Meanwhile, residents are getting bitten by these bugs. Don't move your relatives into American House. I think a call to the Ottawa County health department is necessary.

"Care Quality Declines at Assisted Living Facility; Monetary Focus Seen"
Once upon a time, the care they gave was top-notch, but things sure have changed in the last couple of years. The service and quality of care they offer have hit rock-bottom. My mom was left to clean her room and bathroom because there just weren't enough hands to help, even though our monthly bill certainly didn't get any lighter. And let's talk food. They couldn't be bothered to accommodate special diet needs, with pizza and hot dogs making way too many appearances on the menu. And the fruit? Always from a can, never a fresh piece in sight. Shower times were often overlooked, again because they were understaffed. But, hey, that's not our problem, right? It was the icing on the cake when they sent us to collections for a three month period AFTER my mom had moved to a far superior facility. Don't take their word for it; they stick strictly to their contract. It's such a shame to see this place become just a money-making operation, without the real care they used to give.

"Mixed Experience at Assisted Living Facility"
Being at this assisted living facility has been tough for my family member. The place looks clean, but there was a bed bug incident. Most staff are helpful, but some don't listen to my loved one. The food is good, and they have a hair salon.

"Great care and fun activities for residents highly recommended!"
I would definitely recommend this place; they really do a great job. Everything from the activities to the care is excellent. They have fun activities like bingo, parties, parades, and more. The residents always seem to be having a good time, and the staff make sure everyone can join in. Plus, there's a caretaker who spends time reading to my loved one.

"Friendly Staff, Great Care, but Covid Affects Meals"
American House takes great care of our loved one. The staff is super friendly and always ready to help with anything without making a big deal. Covid has made the meals a bit worse, which isn't fair, according to our loved one.

"Great Food and Space at American House Assisted Living"
We were really happy with almost everything at American House. I’d definitely recommend it. The food was tasty, and the rooms and layout of the place were great. They have a nice patio, courtyard, and fountain for residents to enjoy outside.

"Nice Staff and Small Community, Needs More Memory Care Activities"
Overall, I would recommend American House. Family members need to stay very involved with their loved ones' care. There are only 20 or fewer residents in each building, which is nice for building relationships but makes it harder to have activities in each building. American House is better for residents in Independent or Assisted Living. The memory care staff needs more training. The memory care could use some things to help residents, like fish tanks or a bird aviary. It has gotten better but is still a work in progress. I have never had an issue with how my parents have been treated; the staff has always been kind and professional.
