"Top Choice for Community: Small but Offers Events and Healthcare"

This place is the best option around here. It's not big, but it has all the events and healthcare help we require.

"Disorganized Billing, Poor Cleaning, and Unresponsive Staff at Bickford"

We advise against choosing Bickford. Their accounting division was disorganized - it was unclear what our monthly costs were. The cleanliness was far from satisfactory and administrative staff did not seem to care. We struggled with getting them to reply to our emails and phone calls. My mother didn't enjoy her stay and our overall experience was unsatisfactory.

"Staffing challenges affect promises made by assisted living facility."

The community said they would do some things for us, but they couldn't because they didn't have enough people working. The workers tried really hard, but they didn't have enough time to do everything they needed to.

"Misleading Promises and Neglect at Assisted-Living Community"

Stay away from this facility. It's all false promises and poor care. They make it sound like they're a great option, offering more personalized attention, but it's all for show. They'll tell you someone will respond to requests within five minutes but sometimes, all they say is they're too busy to help right then. Believe me, I've seen it for myself and my mom reported the same thing. They might just chalk it up to a resident being a nuissance by pressing their call button too frequently when it's simply because they aren't getting the help they need. Despite claiming to provide transport for my mom to her medical appointments with two weeks' notice, this rarely ever happened. Several times, she missed appointments, even resulting in one doctor dismissing her as a patient due to these last-minute cancellations. One time, a staff member drove her to an appointment in their own car. In her final weeks, the treatment my mom received was horrendous. She went into hospice care in April 2020 and was given only two weeks to live. At first, the nurse said I could visit her and other family members freely due to her limited time. Yet, five days later, she unexpectedly reversed the decision, blaming it on a corporate policy. It wasn't until over a week later that I found out I could take her outside the facility to visit. When I did take her out, the nurse informed my mom she couldn't see me again because it scared others. I wasn't allowed to see her that day. Luckily, a hospice worker stepped in and I was able to take her out the following day. Yet, the nurse continued to hassle my mom for leaving, and even told me to stop taking her out so she wouldn't miss group activities, as if that was more important than spending time with her child! Near the end, the nurse, sadly, didn't even notice that my mom had stopped eating and drinking, rendering her extremely weak. Eventually, we were abruptly told to leave the facility as we tried to visit outside instead of leaving in a car. No explanation was given. The day my mom passed, we were met with arbitrary restrictions on visiting, differing from what was previously stated. Even then, we were told we could only visit once, not leave and return later. The facility and staff showed a complete lack of empathy and consideration for a dying woman and her grieving family. Don't be fooled by their friendly front and marketing efforts. When it comes to actual care for your loved one, it's a different story. Stick to the saying, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

"Distant, not right for memory care."

They didn't know I was coming.

"Well-cared for with responsive staff"

My mother was at Bickford in Okemos for a short time, and she was well cared for. The staff gave her prompt attention and worked hard to keep her comfortable and involved in activities she could manage. They were also quick to respond to our family's requests, and a small billing issue was fixed without any trouble.

"Nice Facility but Didn't Meet Our Needs"

The facility was very nice, but it didn't meet our needs. It was a bit more expensive than other places I've seen. I was disappointed because the person I was supposed to meet with forgot about our appointment. Instead, I met with someone else who couldn't answer all my questions, especially about finances.

"Subpar and Insensitive Care for Dementia Patients at Assisted Living Facility"

If you're looking for an establishment to care for your family member with Dementia or Alzheimer's, you might want to think twice before choosing this place. They seem fine with providing less-than-stellar care and even over-medicating without informing family members. In our unfortunate experience, they weren't bothered when another patient was disrupted in the middle of the night by our relative who suffered from sundowners' syndrome. Rather than addressing the issue with understanding and empathy, our loved one was accused of a forced into psychiatric treatment based on mere hearsay. Just when we thought it couldn't get worse, we made the decision to switch facilities, subsequently losing our cherished family member. Then, we received loads of unopened mail from this institution, including a letter from the State of Michigan regarding a court case that we missed out on because we hadn't been notified. It's strange because this facility claims to be specialized in treating memory problems, but we faced nothing but difficulties. They seem to want only easy, drama-free residents. If our family member was capable of taking care of themselves, we wouldn't have needed their service to begin with!

"Wonderful Common Areas and No Smoking Policy at Assisted Living"

I really liked it here. I would definitely think about staying. The animals in the common areas were wonderful. There's no smoking allowed. I loved the flower beds that were raised up.

"Underwhelmed by Size and Memory Care Quality for Dad's Needs"

My dad and the other folks with memory issues seemed to struggle more here than at other places. It just wasn't right for us.

"Family-Owned Facility with Caring Staff and Private Rooms"

This assisted living place is pretty new and run by a family. They have certified nursing assistants to help out. You can get a one-bedroom place, but it’ll cost you $3,400, plus extra depending on the care you need.
