"Poor communication and discharge process; Exceptional staff member shines"
My family member stayed at Brookdale West Orange before. I tried to contact the nursing staff multiple times, but they didn't respond to my messages. I wanted to know if my family member had returned from the hospital to Brookdale. Instead of getting an answer from Brookdale, I had to learn from someone else that my family member was discharged and wouldn't be allowed back, several days after I tried to ask the nursing department. It was really disappointing. The only reason I'm giving a slightly better score for Friendliness is because of the Bridge Program Manager. She was super nice and welcoming, and she took the time to understand my family member's life story during orientation.

"Lacks liveliness; distant."
We visited Brookdale. It was nice, but residents were independent. Few activities.

"Weekend Visits Lack Activities, Tour Guide Misses Appointment"
I liked Brookdale West Orange, but when we visited on the weekend, many residents were just watching TV. It felt like there weren't any activities happening. Plus, our tour guide didn't show up, so the food manager gave us the tour. He talked mostly about food.

"Friendly and Professional Staff with Great Facilities"
Overall, the staff are very friendly and professional. They know a lot about the Medicaid process, which was important to me. Everyone is willing to help out, no matter what their job is. The activities coordinator is very energetic, and my loved one really likes him. He and the rest of the staff have been very helpful. The nursing staff pays close attention to my loved one's needs. We're still figuring out some parts of the care, but they have a good foundation. The place is nice and easy to get around. They have a great gazebo in the back that will be awesome when the weather gets warmer. Overall, they offer very good services and care. The location is also great, and it's an excellent value.

"Not Active Enough and No Furniture Provided"
This place was okay, but people seemed to just sit around. I wanted a more active place for my loved one. Also, I had to bring furniture, and I wanted something already set up. Nothing was wrong, it just wouldn't work for us.

"Cozy Tour, Hotel Vibes"
The tour didn't feel very cozy, it seemed more like a hotel. The rooms were nearly identical in size.

"Brookdale West: Upbeat Atmosphere and Friendly Staff Enhance Dining Experience"
The atmosphere at Brookdale West is upbeat and welcoming, not gloomy. Despite occasional communication and COVID-related staffing challenges, the friendly staff and appetizing food make dining enjoyable.

"Assisted Living Facility Review: Good Activities, Slow Responses, Limited Visiting Slots"
The facility is good. The activities manager is very helpful. If I have any concerns, I can talk to her, and she will take care of them. However, getting medical updates isn't fast. It's been weeks without an answer to my latest question. I dislike having to schedule visits. Afternoon slots are limited, mostly in the evening. For the cost, I expected more.

"Communication and Food Changes Impact Assisted Living Experience"
I wish the community had communicated changes better for my loved one's transition. Food was good initially, but recent changes made it less enjoyable.

"A Caring Community"
The staff here is friendly. My uncle enjoys the food, and they have daily activities. They keep the place clean and do his laundry. There are plenty of male residents on his floor. We also have an aid who works well with the staff.

"The facility is nice, but lacks desired room configuration."
The assisted living facility is nice, but the rooms are small. I wish there were two adjoining studios for my parents, but unfortunately, that configuration doesn't exist.

"Top-notch Assisted Living Experience!"
I had a really good time visiting this place for my loved one. The people working there were super helpful and they answered all my questions really well. Also, I liked how the building was set up and all the cool stuff they had for the people living there. I don't have any complaints at all, and I would definitely tell other people to check it out.

"Could use more activities, but clean and pleasant environment."
They keep this place super tidy. It looks really nice, and the people who work here try hard. There are lots of things for folks to do, but my ex-husband thinks it's boring.

"Commute Too Long, Price Too High, Not Homey Atmosphere"

"A Friendly Place for Mom to Thrive"
My mother-in-law is doing great here. She’s making friends and eating well. We’ve tried the food, and it’s really good. She’s joining in on some activities too. They have meetings to listen to the residents. The hairdresser did a nice job, and she was happy with it. The staff fixed her medication and keep an eye on it. She’s moving around more now. It felt like walking into a hotel lobby. The residents are funny, feisty, and very friendly. I would recommend this place.

"Warm and Friendly with Personalized Care"
I chose this place for my dad, and I'm really happy so far. It's only been a week, but he looks great, and every staff member already knows him. He hasn't joined in the social activities yet, but the staff and other residents keep telling me to give him time. The residents I’ve talked to seem very happy and shared their own adjustment experiences with me. I also loved that when we were in the dining room, the woman serving dinner remembered what he drank at lunch. That made me feel like everyone really cares about him. The nurses are also very available to family members. The place is very pretty, and the residents are treated like adults, not patients. They’re given as much freedom and independence as they want. My dad also got to bring his cat, which made him really happy. He uses a walker and is in the early stages of memory problems; he’s 85.

So far, things are going well with the community, but the move was definitely tough. My mom has been at Brookdale for over a month now. They're doing a good job taking care of her.

"Lovely Place with Kind Staff!"
This community is great! The building is pretty inside and out. There's a big backyard with nice views where residents can enjoy fresh air. The staff are really attentive to my parents, helping them get involved in activities. But, they could use more drivers for doctor visits.

"A Good Experience"
My in-laws are doing great at this place. The folks here take good care of them. The part of the place they're in is pretty new, so it's all neat and tidy. The staff is really nice and helpful. They've got lots of fun stuff for my in-laws to do. The food is good, they're eating well. Overall, it's been a positive experience and I'd suggest it to others.

"Unsteady Experience at Emeritus"
Our time at Emeritus in West Orange has been pretty uneven. The place itself is clean and the staff is nice. But, moving in was a huge mess - we moved in around a holiday and they just didn't manage it well. The food is unpredictable too, sometimes she loves it, sometimes she hates it. But, whenever I've eaten there, it's been pretty good, even though I'm usually quite fussy!

"Mixed feelings about cleanliness and pricing at distant location."
This place is in a nice spot, but it's kinda far from where I live. The place isn't as clean as the other places I've seen. And it costs a lot considering its condition.

"Maginal Treatment at Assisted Living, Speedy Exit Needed"
My mom stayed at this community for nearly two months, and I'm stunned that A Place For Mom even thought to recommend it. The treatment here was horrible. It felt less like a caring environment and more like a storage unit for anyone needing a wheelchair and assistance. We moved my mom out as fast as we could.

"Seemed very nice, but we're having problems"
This place seems nice overall, but we've run into a big issue. The staff has been friendly and helpful, especially the head of the memory care unit. However, a week after my loved one moved in, they fell and had to go to the hospital. We understand accidents happen, but then they fell again after returning from the hospital. It feels like they should have been watched more closely.

"Mixed Bag: Good Care, but Numerous Operational Issues"
The folks here are nice, but our tour misled us. Since we visited, some key staff like the social worker and admin aren't around as much. Feels short on help now. After 7 PM, no one's at the front desk; calls go to 24-hour staff, but they're tough to reach. Mom's had trouble with shuttle rides to the doctor when there's no space. Thanksgiving dinner wasn't great; not enough staff to serve everyone quickly. Care's okay overall, but the staff's reliability varies a lot.

"Facility Tour Fell Short of Expectations"
We visited this place, but it didn't wow us. The stuff they had for the cost didn't seem worth it. Other places had better activities and rooms. Plus, it looked older than the one we ended up choosing.

"Lack of Courtesy at Assisted Living Facility"
The helpers are impolite. They ignore you often, never greeting. It feels like they're overburdened and underpaid. I'm a nurse, and it seems like we're not getting our money's worth. I wish they'd at least say hi. While they're looking after my grandma, getting updates feels like a struggle. The floor feels sticky when walking.
