"Mixed Feelings About Sunrise of Old Tappan"
Sunrise of Old Tappan has been pretty easy to deal with up to now! Right now, I would suggest them to others. It's a little soon to give a full recommendation though. However, we had a family member there two years ago and we were satisfied with her care, so we decided to bring another loved one here. We'll have to wait and see if things stay the same or not.

"Sunrise of Old Tappan Tour: Nice but Not Our Best Fit"
Our family visited Sunrise of Old Tappan for a tour. The tour was nice, but compared to other places we've seen, we didn't feel it was the right fit for our loved one.

"Assisted Living Community Comparison"
This place was like another one I considered. I knew someone at the other one, so I picked that instead. They offer nice things for residents, but the other place seemed better.

"Lacked the warm, friendly atmosphere we hoped for"
Our family visited for a tour, and it was good. It was our second choice. But after seeing other places, this one didn’t feel as friendly or happy. The residents didn’t seem very engaged or joyful.

"Mixed Feelings About Assisted Living Facility Tour"
Our family visited this place in person for a tour. It was alright, but when they talked about the different care levels, it was hard to understand. They didn't seem very honest, and we worried they'd charge extra for every little thing. The building was nice, but the medical costs were way higher than other places we checked out.

"Poor Care and Lack of Activities at Old Tappan Facility"
Old Tappan's Assisted Living Facility Lacks Services and Care." This assisted living home in Old Tappan is reminiscent of outdated, closed-down nursing homes. There is a lack of meaningful activities and the staff, which is far too small, consistently behaves rudely and unsympathetically. Strangely, everyone must be quiet in their rooms by 7:30 pm, making the place feel more like a hospital than a home. It sometimes appears that many residents are sedated. In contrast to many other senior communities where age is celebrated and respected, this facility feels stifling, run only by aides and an office clerk. The director's demeanor is frequently inappropriate and disrespectful. On one occasion, we brought a loved one home after an evening out and were greeted with anger by a medication aide because we had returned after 8 pm. There seems to be a lack of empathy among the staff that this facility is, for its residents, home. The lack of enriching activities is particularly concerning. There's one aide who interacted harshly with female residents and is incapable of engaging in any interesting conversation. Strangely, you never hear laughter in this place - signifying a lack of joy and camaraderie. The key aide seems overwhelmed and struggles to handle their responsibilities. The medical staff, particularly a doctor whose name has been left out from this review, fails to show enduring support for its senior residents' well-being. As such, it may simply be better for residents to see their own doctors for their medical needs. Considering all these issues, we're contemplating moving our loved one somewhere else. Growing old shouldn’t involve living in fear or in silence. Life should be celebrated and lived to the fullest, but the director and staff in this facility do not facilitate that.

"Sunrise of Old Tappan Neglects and Disrespects Elders"
We had a horrifying experience with Sunrise of Old Tappan. They didn't listen to our worries or respect us. My father wasn't allowed to use his hearing aids or see his eye doctor, even though Sunrise's own doctor agreed he should. I complained about this mistreatment, and they responded by suing me. I'm a healthcare professional and I work for a major hospital in New York City, so I know how to care for patients. The head of Sunrise yelled at me and hung up on me many times. This was shocking and made a difficult situation even worse. My mother had severe lung disease, but they didn't provide her with medical care. I finally managed to get her taken to the hospital, where she stayed for a week. Sunrise tried to stop me from doing this, but I believe everyone has the right to live. However, later on, my mother ended up in intensive care and passed away 10 days later. Now, my father is lonely and they're not letting him socialize. The staff is understaffed at night and there are no nurses to look after patients. An aide often yells at my dad because he can't hear very well. There were some kind aides, but they could only do so much. It's been really sad and frightening. Unfortunately, the head of Sunrise is probably the meanest person I've met in my 36 years in healthcare. I would not recommend this facility. There are other Sunrise locations and assisted living facilities that treat seniors with a lot more respect. It's heartbreaking that they aren't taking proper care of my father and are feeding him baby food instead of high protein meals. This is a truly upsetting and dangerous situation.

"Feels Like Home for Mom at Sunrise of Old Tappan"
Sunrise of Old Tappan was a really good recommendation. Mom has been there for 8 months now, and it truly feels like home. Thank you so much for suggesting this place and for listening to me and my sisters to help find what was best for our mom. We're really grateful.

"Homey Atmosphere with Attentive Staff and Clean Facilities"
This place is great! The people who work here are super nice and always pay attention to you. Everything is really clean, and they know everyone's names. The food looks yummy, and it feels like home. They play a lot of Frank Sinatra music, which is cool. The rooms are a good size, and they have kitchenettes.

"Poor Hygiene and Negligent Management at Assisted Living Facility"
The staff members do a good job but the Lead Care Manager doesn't seem kind or caring. They need to do better when dealing with people. On tours, the administrators make the place look fantastic but the reality differs. I've noticed chairs wet with urine and bathrooms which are not clean, with soiled diapers on the floor. The situation is worse in the memory care wing, where there's a lot of yelling and screaming.

"Warm Atmosphere with Helpful Staff and Varied Activities"
The people who work here are really kind and helpful. The folks who live here are friendly too. There are plenty of things to do, and my mom is starting to join in. Sometimes the food tastes good, sometimes not so much. It's not a big place, and it's been around for a while, but they make sure it stays clean. I think it's a good place for people to live.

"Welcoming Place, But Check Costs and Details"
Sunrise feels cozy and homey, unlike the last place which felt more like a hotel. The food is okay, but they don't spend enough time helping our family member with the menu. Instead, they just give him what they think he'll like, which can be frustrating. They do serve beer and wine with dinner, which is nice for an occasional drink, and family and friends can join meals for a small fee. The staff are always welcoming when we drop by, and it's always clean, warm, and friendly. However, we wish they'd pay more attention to cleaning his private bathroom. They wait for him to ask, but with his poor vision, he doesn't always see when it needs cleaning. My biggest complaint is the push to use OMNI care for prescriptions. Our family member gets his meds through the VA, so he doesn't have prescription insurance. OMNI care has specific packaging rules, and switching would cost us over $1,500 more each month. If you have prescription insurance, this might not be an issue, but make sure to check before moving in. Rates are quoted daily, and care costs can increase quickly without you realizing it. If money is no problem, you and your family member will probably be very happy here. The staff are very friendly and try hard to meet everyone's needs.

"Mom loves it here!"
My mom just moved in, and so far, everyone is great. The place feels like a resort. It’s very clean, and everyone is nice and helpful. The staff and other residents are friendly. My mom loves all the meals and says it feels like dining at a restaurant with so many choices. The assistants do their jobs well.

"Beautiful facility, but higher costs than expected"
We visited this community while searching for care options for our loved one. I thought the place looked really nice. The facility was beautiful and well laid out, and the people seemed friendly. However, it was quite expensive, and the extra costs for our loved one's care needs made it more than we could afford.

"Aunt and Uncle are very happy in their new home!"
Our family moved our Aunt and Uncle from out of state to New Jersey. The move was stressful and a bit chaotic for us, but the Sunrise staff was very understanding and helpful. We noticed the staff being very attentive to the residents. Our Uncle is enjoying the menu, and our Aunt and Uncle are smiling again. They seem very happy with their new home.

"Very nice place, but not the best fit for us."
We visited this place while looking for care options. It looked very nice, was clean, and the people were friendly and caring. The care seemed great. However, we didn’t think the atmosphere was the best fit for our loved one. It felt a bit too upscale for her comfort.

"Great experience, nice place, Mom loves it here!"
We had a great experience, and it's going well for us. The place is really nice. We hired someone to help, and she talks with the staff about any needs. Mom loved it from the start. They really enjoy the food and can’t stop talking about it. There are lots of activities to do.

"Very happy with clean, friendly community"
I am very happy with this community. It's really clean, and the staff is friendly. I don't join many activities, but those who do seem to enjoy them. The food could be better, though—there's room for improvement. Overall, I'm quite happy. The location works well for me, and it's easy for my friend to visit. I'd definitely recommend it.
