"Mixed Experience with Staff Turnover and Good Amenities"

I picked this place because rooms were spacious, costs moderate, and staff ratios fair. Staff turnover has been high. Food's good, they try to meet dietary needs. I'd suggest it to other families.

"Great care with attention to detail and responsive staff."

All the common areas at Elan, like the hallways and tables, were very clean. It would have been nice if they paid a bit more attention to the resident rooms. The staff consistently showed a lot of care and love. Our family was also very impressed by the care provided. The assisted living area seemed more sophisticated than the memory care side, with better care and communication. We would have liked a bit more focus on the smaller details of my mother's care. Compared to her previous place, she received a much higher level of care and more attention here for the same cost. They also helped her attend events outside the community. The activities director did a great job keeping her engaged. The executive director was amazing and very responsive, and all the key staff were accommodating and communicative.

"A Pleasant Surprise: Mom’s New Home!"

I visited this place today for my Mom. It was super clean and nice. I think Mom will love the friendly staff and fun activities. The residents seem happy and well taken care of. They even treated me to lunch, which was surprisingly good—definitely not what I expected from typical facility food. The nurse explained everything about Mom’s care, and I feel confident choosing this facility.

"Bad Experience at Elan - Poor Care, False Promises, Lack of Refunds"

Let me tell you that the folks who work in marketing at Elan Santa Monica are terrific. They're friendly, helpful and great communicators. But although I can't rate this place zero stars, absolutely the only star I give this place goes to those marketing guys. From the outside, the facility looks nice, but don't be fooled. When we checked out the rooms, we saw dead roaches in two out of three. And yeah, they were dead but they were all over the place. The showers were always cold, and the food was awful, even my elderly family member didn't like it. Here comes the important part: You absolutely shouldn't consider Elan for your loved one's care. We went to Elan because my family member needed special care for their memory condition. The marketing team convinced us to choose their facility. They were caring and responsive when we had tons of questions and worries because this was a real tough decision for us. But everything changed once my family member became a resident at Elan. The head nurse was terrible – she didn't actually provide care. We were assured that our loved one would be checked on every half an hour and that we'd be kept informed about anything that happened – like falls or behavior issues. Despite our constant calls and visits, we always got the same rosy answers. Then, out of nowhere, they said they had to kick my family member out due to their supposed "bad behavior." This was unbelievable! We were paying $6,000 a month and found out they only checked on our family member every two hours and failed to inform us about multiple falls. My loved one's ankle even swelled up from a near break that nobody at Elan knew about. When we confronted the head nurse, she criticized our family member's behavior but wouldn't explain why we weren't kept in the loop. The director was no better. After promising a refund due to the lack of care, we only got part of the money back and she stopped returning our calls. It was clear that they were more interested in keeping our money than providing proper care. To sum it up, Elan might seem nice at first, but the actual care provided is really poor. The head nurse is more of a manager than a nurse, and the director is terrible with customer service. In my opinion, this reflects badly on the whole place. I absolutely cannot recommend Elan; it was just a big letdown. That said, I definitely suggest checking out another facility at a location I'll keep private. They truly care about their residents and keep their promises, so they deserve your consideration.

"Great Staff in a Big, Clean Place"

This is a beautiful new place. It's really clean, and the staff is friendly. But, it's too big and looks too much like a hospital. The staff is amazing, though.

"Lovely Facility with Oversight in Tour Coordination"

I visited this assisted living facility which has wonderful amenities. Despite my scheduled and confirmed tour, there was confusion as no one seemed aware of my visit. The staff member assigned to guide me had recently joined and couldn't answer all my questions. It's a great place, but unfortunately, it's too far from my home to choose it.

"Mixed Impressions on New Assisted Living Facility"

The new facility was bright and open, but its location in a manufactured home park was distracting due to nearby crime. Costs were better than expected.

"Pricey Fees with Limited Spaces and Small Rooms"

Every year, the fees increase by 2-4%. This could mean we would need to pay up to $2700 extra each year. The memory care section is fresh and modern, but feels a bit cold. There's just one major hangout space. The rooms are tiny and don't have closets, just a small wardrobe.

"Still growing, but promising with right management and potential"

This place is new and very nice. During my tour, they were still growing and not as established as I hoped for my mom. The management seemed to be hiring the right people, and our tour guide answered all our questions. The rooms weren’t furnished, so residents have to provide their own furniture, which I didn’t like. Overall, it’s a matter of whether they can provide great service from the start.

"Small Community, Big Benefits"

I'm really glad I got the chance to move my dad from Florida to here; it's truly been a blessing. I picked this place for several reasons, but the main one was that it's brand new. The building layout is a lot like the community he was in back in Florida. Right now, the memory care unit only has 7 residents, which is great for my dad because he's getting the one-on-one attention he needs.
