"Mix of Excellent and Rude Staff at Assisted Living Facility"

Some employees are really GREAT while others are just RUDE! Honestly, when you reach your 70s, should you have to deal with RUDE people? I don't think so! No matter the person's attitude, there are several techniques to handle them. If you're not satisfied with your work, then QUIT!

We really liked Atria East Northport. Sadly, my mother-in-law fell and broke her hip, needing more care elsewhere.

"Poor Care, High Fees at USA Assisted Living Facility"

We thought we had found an awesome place for mom! They sure know how to sell their place before grabbing your cash! They surprised us with a month-long "get to know us fee". The helpers in the underground zone for the dementia patients weren't too proactive. They let guest arguments happen and even allowed a guy to pee in their dining area! They were obviously too busy chatting away. The problem? They're short on staff - good staff, to be specific. The meal situation in the dementia area was just terrible. We had to take mom home after only three weeks. It was a dreadful experience! They charged us an arm and a leg for such poor service. They'll certainly make a good sale, no denying they're quite smooth!

"Good assisted living option with minor communication improvements needed."

I recommend it. Like everywhere, you need to stay informed about what’s happening and not rely entirely on them. You should keep talking with the staff and your loved one, which is just normal. Initially, it took some time to figure out all the care services, but it’s all fine now. They weren’t always telling us when our loved one didn’t want certain services she signed up for, and we just wanted to know so we could talk to her about why each one matters. But that’s all fixed now. The front desk hasn’t been as friendly, but overall, the staff we’ve met and talked to have been friendly for the most part.

"Feels like home with great care!"

Atria East Northport has a wonderful team that makes you feel at home. They offer comfort and are always accessible and helpful. I highly recommend them to anyone needing assisted living or dementia care.

"Great community for my friend; highly recommended!"

This has turned out to be a great move for my friend. She is doing well, and I feel good about her moving to this community. It’s a really nice facility with friendly people. She is getting good care and seems to be adjusting well to her new home. This community is lively, and I really like it a lot. Everything is going very well, and I would highly recommend this place.

"Nothing but good things!"

We can’t say enough good things about this place. My loved one adores the staff and says they take great care of him. He enjoys the food and meeting new people. They do a great job with both residents and their families.

"Pleasant Place Overall"

Overall, we're happy with our experience at Atria East Northport. The facility is beautiful, always spotless, and offers a lot for residents. While it can't replace home, the staff ensures everyone feels comfortable and content. Our only suggestion is to encourage more resident participation in activities.

"Late Paperwork Hinders Reimbursement, Loved One Content"

This place is okay, but there's just one little issue. They're supposed to send some papers either to me or my insurance company. But it's getting quite late and I haven't got any money back from the insurance yet, because they still need those papers. Besides that, everything else is pretty good and my loved one is really happy living there.

"Diheartening Journey: Lack of Care Exposed at Atria East Northport"

In late August of 2011, my mother became a resident in the dementia care unit of Atria, East Northport. Unfortunately, not even a month later, she was hospitalized with a broken hip. The circumstances of how she fell are terribly disturbing. She fell during the night and no one discovered her until morning. It's hard to believe that she wouldn't have cried out for help. But, the night staff were usually congregated in a common room, likely too far away to hear her. When they found her in the morning, they assisted her up, helped her to get dressed, and walked her to the common room. When I visited her after lunch, she could not even stand up. I wasn't informed of my mother's fall, and no one had even attempted to walk her to the bathroom for the entire morning. I proposed to the director that the night staff should be stationed at the ends of hallways to catch any calls for help, but I was told this wasn't feasible. Atria said my mother could only return if I hired a private overnight aide, so I did, wanting to keep her close. At some point, my mother's doctor put her on a patch for Alzheimer's. I wasn't told about this new medication, but I did notice that all of a sudden, my mother was suffering from extreme diarrhea which led to bowel incontinence. She told me she felt like a "diaper baby." I had no idea what was causing this, so I spoke with the nursing staff, asking them to withhold her stool softener. A few weeks later, upon checking her medical records, I discovered the new medication listed. After some online research, I found that the drug was not recommended for people under 100 lbs. My mother weighed less than that and one of the main side effects was diarrhea. Despite her condition starting soon after the first dose, the doctor increased her dosing after a week, claiming he wasn't aware of the diarrhea. This situation was worsened when I found out from the private night aide that my mother was often wearing two patches at a time, something that should never be done according to guidelines. As my mother's health worsened and with minimal supervision for dementia patients, I hired a daytime aide. Despite this, I was urged by Atria to move my mother to a nursing home. The following weeks were highly stressful. Local nursing homes were full and I was told that if I couldn't find her a bed, she would be sent wherever one was available. Thankfully, another local assisted living center, Birchwood, offered my mother a place to stay, under the condition that her aides accompany her. They even put her in a private room on the standard floor, a cheaper alternative to the dementia unit, since she had private care. Sadly, my mother passed away six weeks after this transition. Unlike Atria, Birchwood didn't expel her as she neared the end and the staff completely supported both her and me along with the amazing aides who took care of her. If you're just starting this journey with a loved one, my advice is to look for affordable, private help. If I had found these angel nurses sooner, my mom could have remained at home. Based on my experiences, these facilities just don't offer sufficient supervision for dementia patients.

"“Lovely Assisted Living Facility with Some Odd Features”"

I visited the Open House. It was easy to find. Inside the front door, there’s a lovely café for guests and residents. The chef treated us to delicious appetizers like lamb chops, shrimp cocktail, spring rolls, and crab cakes. We got an invite for a meal, which is tempting! The facility is big, with 150 residents and only a few available rooms. What struck me as odd was that all rooms are being renovated to include a kitchenette with a full-size refrigerator, coffee maker, and microwave. While it’s ‘high end,’ my mom wouldn’t use it. The rooms have big closets, nice-sized bathrooms, and overall spaciousness. They’ve also created a cement walking path around the facility, which will be great for daily walks once it’s landscaped. Smartly, there’s a closed-in courtyard for memory patients. There are plenty of activities, but my mom noticed only ONE off-premises activity—a bus trip to Roosevelt’s home, and another month it was Westbury Gardens, I think. Where my mom is now, they take daily rides, so not getting out often would bother her. Plus, it’s just a short walk to Larkfield Road for shopping. Everyone was very nice!

"Expensive Renovating Facility with Mismatched Staff"

The place is currently under construction. I didn't feel the staff matched well with my mom's needs. The fees are more expensive compared to other care homes I've visited.

"Very happy, clean place, friendly staff"

We are very happy. It's a really clean place, and the staff is pretty friendly. My mom is actually pretty happy there. She could use a little more variety in the daily activities, just a suggestion, not a complaint. My mom is very comfortable there, and everyone has been absolutely terrific.

"Neglectful Facility Seems Money-Driven, Creates Constant Worry"

The facility neglected him constantly. He'd just remain isolated in his room, gazing aimlessly out the window. There were multiple hospital visits, and the final time he fell, he was left waiting for help all day. It wasn't even nighttime and there was no check-up. It seemed to me like they were only interested in the payment. My mom was in a constant state of worry about a dreaded phone call - about my dad winding up in the hospital again. She couldn't stand leaving him in their care.

"Promising assisted living for Dad, mindful of Mom's commute."

I visited the place on Saturday, I was happy to see many men living there because I'm searching for a place for my Dad. The drive might be long and tough for my Mom. But I'll remember this place once we finish checking Dad's medicine and care needs at the hospital.

"Needs work: Care and Maintenance, Food's Nice Though"

My relative and I have bumped into some problems at Atria East Northport. They could really be more mindful of everything, from the residents to the condition of the place. My family member got off on a bad foot here, having a couple of tumbles and getting sick during the first two weeks. Plus, he constantly appears to be in dirty clothes, so it seems like they don't stick to their wash routine very well. Although management was quite involved and fast to act during the first few weeks, it now generally just seems like business as usual. If you need anything done, you're better off talking to the helpers directly. But, one thing that they do seem to get right is the food. It always seems pretty tasty.

"Assisted Living Review: Nice Community with Room for Improvement"

This place is really nice and cheerful. They're fixing up some parts, but it can be a hassle for the people who live here. The main meals are tasty, but they don't give you much food, and they rush you to finish. They say they have food for diabetics, but you can never get it. The snacks and appetizers they serve at some gatherings aren't very healthy and kind of disappointing. The staff is awesome and really nice. The people who live here are also really friendly.

"Happiness at Atria if you can afford it"

My sister recently moved into an assisted living facility. She calls me every day to share how happy she is. The food is top-notch, and the staff is incredibly friendly. The activities are fine, and she even takes trips into the city once a week using the LIRR. Unlike most residents, she can walk unassisted, and her room is very spacious and lovely. However, it is quite expensive.

"Atria East Northport: Negligent Care, False Promises"

My dad lived at Atria East Northport for less than a month. During that short time, he had to go to the ER twice. Once, he fell and another time, he almost had sepsis from a urinary infection. My dad was always healthy before this. Atria's staff didn't seem to notice my dad getting worse. Nobody took responsibility for his poor care. The place wasn't safe or clean. There were dirty clothes and leftover food on the floor. They didn't even have wipes on the unit. I sent several letters to the Atria president, Although the company responded, Atria president never did. They promise high-quality care on their website, but that's not what we saw. My dad walked into Atria on his own but left in a stretcher after less than a month. He can't walk now and is in a nursing home. When we moved him in, Greg from Atria told us that we would see him getting better within a few weeks because of their "expert" care. But the staff didn't look out for the residents. There were no activities on his floor, just constant TV. If you're thinking about using Atria East Northport for your loved one, check out the unit they'll be living on. My dad was in P2, which we never saw when we toured the place. My mom now calls it "the forgotten floor." Leanne from Atria told us she visits often, but I never saw her or any staff besides the aides there. There weren't enough staff to care for everybody. The patients with dementia were left alone, which is not okay. This was a really bad experience for my family. My dad and us will never get over it.

"He’s happy, and the staff has been very helpful."

The staff has been very kind and patient during the move. They helped us get settled without charging right away, which was great. The food is usually good, though not perfect all the time. Overall, he's very happy there, and the people are super friendly!

"A Tough Decision Made Easy"

The staff at Atria made this tough transition so much easier. Choosing a place for my dad to live wasn't easy, but it was necessary. The staff and the Atria itself made this decision very simple. The staff is very welcoming and reassuring. The Atria is very clean and nicely decorated. They told me about all the activities my dad would join and how they would take care of him. I feel good knowing he is in a safe, clean place with people who care about him. Thank you to the staff at Atria and "A Place For Mom" for helping us find Atria and being so supportive.

"They Really Are Wonderful! They Call..."

They're truly amazing! Whenever something happens, they give me a call. Even with 150 residents, they remember who I am when I walk in—always recognizing me as someone's daughter. The activities they offer make me want to live there. As for the food, it's usually a 3 or 4, depending on the day's menu. Right now, they're renovating everything, and they've been great at keeping us informed. Tracy Abamont from A Place For Mom was phenomenal! Back in August, Tracy assured us that communities would reach out. Within five minutes, they called about an available room. It was fantastic!

"Not Ideal for Long-Term Use"

We tried the dementia unit, but I felt they didn’t take residents out enough. The food was okay, maybe a 4 out of 5 for healthiness. They did a decent job with meals for the residents’ diets. However, I wouldn’t use it long term. If I needed respite care again, I’d keep searching. We picked them because they were the only place available at the time.

"A warm, welcoming, and friendly place for mom"

I was so lucky to find Atria for my mom! After she fell, I knew she couldn't live alone anymore, but I was worried I wouldn't find a place that felt like home to her. As soon as I walked into Atria, I felt it was a welcoming place for someone who valued her independence but also loved being around people.

"Medication Overused at Assisted Living Facility"

I can't really complain about this place since everyone's experience is unique, but sadly, my time there wasn't the best. Sure, it's neat and looks great, but it's quite tiny and they have strict safety measures that feel confining. I didn't find them to be very patient. Their go-to solution was medication. Whenever my roommate felt upset, they'd give him pills. That's not always the right answer and it felt like they were too quick to resort to meds. My roommate kept falling because he was too medicated, so they kept sending him to the hospital. He ended up there 8 times, which I thought was unnecessary and a strain on the wallet. I felt like they were simply trying to get him out of their hair for a few hours. They never really paid heed to what I said. Even though I told them to discuss the medications with me first, they never did.

On January 9th, 2012, the assistant director, Christine DeLeo, talked to the director. They have availability for an assisted living space with memory care. The basic cost for a shared room is $3,300 per month, while a private room is $4,425. Other services offered include medication management for an extra $320 per month. Life Guidance Care, which is an all-inclusive memory care, costs $4,775 for a shared room and $6,820 for a private room. Medicare payments can be used to cover the medical care here, but they don't accept Medicaid. They told me that Medicaid is usually only accepted by nursing homes.

"Nice, active, happy residents, great backyard, clean, close to family"

This place is really nice. It’s active and the residents seem happy and chatty. There’s a strong sense of community. I didn’t see any wheelchairs. The backyard is nice with gardens and lots of space. It’s not overwhelming at all. Everything is clean and it’s close to shopping and family.
