" Mom's Health Declines Rapidly in Unsupportive Assisted Living Facility"

To put it simply, my mother, who was in the early stages of dementia, moved to this assisted living facility. The food was awful. We found out the reason behind this was their undisclosed policy of serving only kosher meals, despite the fact that my mother isn't kosher. As her condition worsened, she required more external healthcare, which was surprisingly not included in the fees, thus adding to my expenses. Once we decided to relocate her to a memory care ward in the same building, her health drastically deteriorated. Despite investing my own funds for almost continuous private caregiving, she regressed rapidly. The problem was, her slow eating was never aided and meals were cleared as per their schedule, leaving her with consumed one-fourth of her total meals each day. Adding to her troubles, the assigned physician prescribed her fiber supplements that unfortunately led to persistent diarrhea. When we finally transferred her to another facility, she was greatly weakened, both physically and mentally, to the point that she passed away soon after. I would strongly advise against considering this facility.

"Atria overcharged and refused refund after insurance denial"

My experience here was really bad. At first, they were nice when they were getting me into the place, but things changed when we had to talk about the cost after my long-term insurance rejected my claim. Without that insurance, I couldn't afford Atria, but they kept charging my card for things I couldn't understand even after they sent me the billing details I asked for. They didn't want to give back my money, so I had to argue about the charges with my credit card company. Luckily, I won the argument.

"Good Community, but Improvements Needed"

I love the community here. The food is terrible, and it's expensive. They do a good job of telling me about my loved one's health care. They could be faster at giving out medication. The rooms are small, which makes it hard for people with disabilities, and it's not very accommodating.

"Friendly Community with Jewish Focus"

This place is great for anyone needing care, but it’s very Jewish-oriented. Staff turnover is high, but they’re attentive. Administrators promptly address family concerns. During holy week, non-Jewish residents face meal challenges. Limited food choices, sometimes cold. Community offers exercise classes, Tai Chi, field trips, book club, and entertainers.

"Disappointed Experience at Assisted Living Facility"

Before my mom moved in, they had a COVID problem. I couldn't reach anyone, so I couldn't check her in. I decided not to move her in for now. I lost my deposit and they kept charging me. They took money from my mom's account. I'm still waiting for a call to fix this. The rooms and building are nice, but there's not much outdoor space, just a terrace.

"Mixed Experience with Assisted Living Facility; Great Staff, Communication Issues"

We've had some good and some not so good experiences at the assisted living facility. Overall, the staff was very friendly. They supported us a lot in helping my loved one transition there. They visited our home, explained their services, and were always very helpful in getting her settled. They did their best given my loved one's needs and were very accommodating, even helping her choose meals for her diabetic diet. However, the biggest issue arose when my loved one contracted Covid there and had to be hospitalized. There was a staff member who didn't handle my mother's behavior well, leading to poor communication between the rehab facility, Atria, and myself. I wasn't informed soon enough that she couldn't return to Atria.

"Mixed Feelings on Assisted Living Quality and Management"

The meals aren’t great considering what we’re paying. It looks like they can’t keep a steady team; we’ve seen three different bosses since August, which has been a letdown. On the bright side, their COVID plan is in place and working well so far.

"Great Staff and Activities, Cozy Rooms"

I liked the building, neighborhood, staff, and how they treat people. The library is very small, and I'm not sure the menu has a lot of variety. But the room layout looks like a good fit for us, and the many activities at the independent living level are also a good fit.

"Great Start for My Aunt"

My aunt is still getting used to living here. The staff are very helpful and making sure she feels comfortable. She's eating the meals, and I've heard she likes the activities. She's joining in on the morning exercise and art class. I think this place is better and easier for me to visit her.

"Worth Considering for Religious Seniors"

The food here is okay, but they just got a new chef and manager, so we hope it gets better. The workers are nice. The person in charge of residents is great and quick to help. The place is always clean. It's a good choice for someone who's religious.

"Nice Place, But Not Just Right for Mom"

I visited this place for my mom. It's a decent place - from what I saw everything looked really good. I had a good visit there, but I wanted something closer to home. Even though they provide a lot, it wasn't the exact right match for my mom.

"Good Choice for Dad!"

My dad's new place, Atria, was great even though he's leaving soon. I only visited once when we toured it. We picked Atria because it's kosher. The tour guide knew a lot and Dad likes it. He hasn't said anything bad about it.

"Unaware of Strictly Kosher Menu at Atria Riverdale"

My cousin's doing alright at Atria Riverdale, but she's not happy about the meals. They only serve Kosher food, but they don't tell you that before you come. I believe that's a big deal that you and your family should be made aware of because my cousin doesn't follow a Kosher diet. The place looks neat and the workers are super nice and ready to help. The cost is fairer than other facilities, but I still have doubts about what they're charging her. My rating for this place is 3 stars while the food gets a disappointing 1 star.

"Great but Needs More Staff"

"My Impression of Atria: High Standard Nursing Home"

Atria's place feels nice and looks pretty clean. The staff, especially the directors, are friendly and helpful. But the food service is a bit dull—mostly fish every day with not much variety. The activities they offer are mainly for older and disabled folks, like book talks, singing songs, and old movies. It might get a little boring for less disabled people. Overall, Atria is a well-supervised nursing residence for elderly folks with disabilities. However, if you're healthy and normal, it's too pricey and not really for independent living.

"So clean and friendly, loved one feels at home!"

It's very nice and super clean. The staff is really friendly. At first, our loved one was nervous, but it didn't take long for her to say she likes it. We've had no problems with the billing. Everyone is so nice. A relative in our family needs care, and after seeing this place, he wants to go here too.

"Nice place but needs more staff and friendly residents"

The place is very nice, but they don't have enough staff, like most places. Sometimes the meds aren't given on time. The biggest problem is the other residents. There's not much diversity, and they aren't very friendly. They can be cliquish and exclusive, and sometimes they won't let others join their tables. She likes the food, though. We have talked with the team, and they are very good about meeting her needs.

"Wonderful Respite Care Experience"

My family member stayed at the assisted living facility for a month during respite care. She had a great time! The social activities were fantastic, especially going to the movies. The location near the city was convenient, and the shuttle service worked well. Overall, it was a positive experience. The only thing missing was an exercise room, but since my loved one is independent, it wasn’t a big issue.

"Needs better onboarding"

I think the Atria team is good at their job. They’re friendly and helpful to the people who live there. But when I started, the process wasn’t very exciting. They didn’t give me enough guidance or tell me what to expect. I had to ask all the questions myself.

"Unsatisfactory Stay at Atria Assisted Living"

My husband and I tried out the Atria elder care facility for 30 days. Unfortunately, my experience was far from positive, I was ready to pack up and leave. The provided services fell significantly short of those highlighted during my initial orientation. The space was a major constraint as the allotted room was not spacious enough for two people. My husband, being a Level 2 care recipient, was supposed to receive assistance during the mornings and evenings. Fortunately, I was there to show the staff how to help him since no fixed schedule had been arranged. Meals were another issue, with long waiting times in the dining hall. The menu lacked completeness, and you had better luck if you knew what you wanted beforehand. The tidiness of the room was also frustrating as no one came to vacuum. However, a highlight was the activities team who were superb in their role. It was also tough accommodating two people with varying care needs. Furthermore, the facility underwent a lockdown due to a disease outbreak. In my opinion, we should've been sent home until the situation was under control. The coordination between the different departments was poor, and a lot of confusion could've been cleared up if we had a chance to meet with a social worker early on. The best decision we made was to leave and return home.

"Nice Place with Good Amenities, But Lacks Weekend Staff"

Our family member's stay was short, but Atria Riverdale seemed nice. It was clean and well-kept, with plenty of activities. The food was good too. Unfortunately, our loved one had a bad fall on their first day and couldn't stay. We noticed fewer staff on weekends.

"Decent Facility, Some Snags - Pets Welcome!"

Generally, Atria Riverdale does pretty well, though we've faced some challenges. To me, the staff seems always ready to lend a hand and pretty friendly, and they keep the place tidy. My family member is finding it a bit hard to get used to this new way of living, but everyone there is trying their best to make him comfortable. There's been a couple of mix-ups with his medicine, but nothing drastic. My beloved one isn't a fan of the food served. I like that they allow pets, I feel it's a major advantage for elderly folks!

The community was multicultural and super social, with an urban vibe compared to other places we visited. The staff stood out for being incredibly friendly and attentive.

"Medication Chaos Highlights Atria Riverdale's Mismanagement"

Looks Can Hide Reality at Assisted Living Facilities This facility seems great initially, with its nice and tidy outward appearance, but once your loved one starts living at Atria Riverdale, you begin to realize management is really messed up. As a recent example, since January 2014, they have been charging an EXTRA $475 for medicating residents. This used to be a part of the monthly cost, but now that's being charged on top of normal fees. As a result, folks are required to leave their rooms for medication. Often everyone gathers in a crowded and confusing space, waiting for the medical technician to appear. It isn't uncommon for residents to have to seek out the med tech to receive their medication. My Mom has even had to wait for hours to receive her medication, and worse, she's received the wrong medication multiple times. There were situations when she missed her medication doses as no one ensured it was received by her. We even noticed a time she was given her night medication in the morning. Despite changes in Mom's prescriptions by her doctor, staff has continued to give her old medicine. The management is being paid to manage her medication but she essentially has to be in control to ensure it's done correctly. The approach of the "Wellness" staff, also known as the nursing office, is unsatisfactory. They seem more focused on their performance reviews than the actual wellbeing of the residents. Their behavior often turns argumentative and they act totally unprofessional, and don't respond to residents' urgent communication attempts for hours or sometimes not at all. We're presently deeply disappointed and feel that we were deceived about Atria Riverdale's capacity to cater, maintain and safeguard their residents' quality of life. Whenever people ask us about recommending Atria Riverdale, our answer is a resounding "no." Mom stays only due to her strong bonds with fellow residents and the genuine care she receives from the aides. It would be too upsetting for her to move now. However, she is equally stressed due to the poor administration at Atria Riverdale. This place could be run better.

"Highly Recommend This Place!"

Everything is going really well. It’s very clean, and the staff is super friendly. The staff does change sometimes, so I don’t always see the same person more than a few times. It’s a great place. They have lots of fun activities, like a movie every night and live music. The dining room is really nice, the food is delicious, and the menu changes a lot. The food is well-prepared and served nicely. I chose it because I like the area, and I can walk to shops and other places in just five minutes. They also provide transportation. I would highly recommend it.

"Decent Assisted Living Place, But Location and Cleanliness Lacking"

The tour was good and the place was better than I thought it would be, but it's too close to the highway for my liking. There's just a porch in the back. It could also use a bit more cleaning. Haven't totally crossed it off my list, but it's not my top choice.

"A Heartbreaking Disappointment at Atria of Riverdale"

Our time at the Atria in Riverdale was awful. We noticed that our mom seemed less aware and less able to move around than other folks in the dementia care unit during our first visit. We were told that Atria could handle her needs. The staff was nice and the environment seemed good so we put money down on a room. The very next day, they told us someone else wanted the room so we had to make a choice right then. We decided to take the room and moved my mom in. Then just a few days after that, Atria said they actually couldn't look after her. They admitted that her needs exceeded what they were equipped to handle. On top of this, they suggested we pay for a private aide to be with her around the clock while we looked for a new place. This shocked and upset us. Earlier, we had voiced our worries and they were ignored. We ended up moving my mom to a nursing home. She passed away a few months afterwards. Atria definitely messed up in figuring out the right level of care for my mom. They also treated us poorly. Although the actual people giving care were great and kind-hearted, I wouldn’t suggest this company to anyone.

"Avoid Atria Riverdale - Terrible Care and Costly Experience"

My uncle stayed at Atria Riverdale last year where he used their round-the-clock healthcare. The workers there have confessed that they didn't check on him as much as they should have, which led to him getting seriously hurt. He was in a lot of pain during his last few months there. I wouldn't suggest anyone use Atria's facilities or healthcare. Our experiences were awful and cost us a lot of money. Think twice before you put your loved ones in their care.

We are really happy with this place! My mom has adjusted so well! She was independent for so long, so it was tough, but she’s doing great! This place is wonderful! It’s very social and perfect for someone who loves being around others! My mom’s only complaint is that she’s tired because she’s doing so much! They have lots of activities to keep everyone busy and entertained! It’s awesome! The food is really good too! There’s a lot of choices, and we’ve eaten here several times. No complaints at all! We couldn’t be happier!!

"Review: Huge Disappointment with Management and Services at Atria"

We really hoped things would be great when mom headed into Atria. She's been there for over two years now and decided to stay because she's made lots of pals with the other residents and the staff. Mom digs her caregivers, however, she's not a huge fan of the facility itself. The caregivers are awesome, really caring and all about making sure mom stays in good spirits and cozy. Her aides have been top-notch, super efficient and have really shown great care. It’s clear that the upper management seriously doesn't appreciate them. In two situations, we know the caregivers got PHYSICALLY ATTACKED by some really wound up patients. The staff got the axe while the aggressive patients got a lecture and then just carried on with their bullying behavior. The management, while the caregivers do all the truly rough and tough tasks, keeps introducing new and worse rules that make the caregivers' lives tougher. The latest one is that caregivers are now prohibited from giving their patients their meds. Instead, the patient has to go down to the nurse's office to take their pills. OUR MOM WAS GIVEN THE WRONG MEDS at the nurse's office. Thank goodness her aide spoke up, which put her in hot water with the management. The management just tried to hide the whole mess, ignoring not just our mom and her aide, but us as well. The food is also gut-wrenchingly gross. Mom frequently has to order in because they keep running out of breakfast staples like orange juice, coffee, or eggs. It ain't unusual for them to run out of dinner dishes or serve stuff that's not even on the menu. Mom always keeps her fridge filled, although at Atria's steep price, she really shouldn't have to. And for anyone who’s NOT Jewish or kosher, there’s no consideration. They all have to eat kosher. During the big Jewish holidays, some of mom's non-Jewish friends have often had to go hungry or eat out. Atria's got THREE kitchens. Something could be done for the non-kosher folks, even if it's as basic as ordering pizza in one of the other dining areas. The management's totally unhelpful and sloppy. It's a pain getting in touch with the right person when we need them, and they often seem to have no clue about what’s happening. They don't seem to view their residents as people, but more like things they can profit from. There’s frequent staff turnover and we don’t usually get informed about changes in policies or decisions that would affect our mom directly. We're starting to think we gotta step in more to make sure mom's quality of life stays good. Cleaning is hit-or-miss. They often skip cleaning or don't finish what they’ve started. And mom even had some of her underwear STOLEN from her place. The planned activities are a mess too. The schedule is usually wrong or outdated, and the activities often don’t happen or are poorly organized. Now, out of the blue, aides can't stay with their patients during activities. Trips have been canned often because they were planned on days when residents can't go - sometimes due to religious reasons. I mean, REALLY? The free rides within a five-mile radius can often be late or not show up at all, and the previous driver was grumpy. There’s not even a space where residents and their families can discuss all the issues happening at Atria. Everyone’s kept separated, and we know from our own chats with others, a lot of people aren't happy. We picked this Atria because it’s close, we had to quickly find a place, and it seemed good at first. They even sent us home with a tasty apple pie they claimed was "baked on-site.” It wasn’t, and we've not seen it since in the dining room. All said, it's been rough. We'd move mom out tomorrow, but we fear that would upset her now that she has so many friends. But we may have to do it anyway, the more our frustration grows.

"Best Memory Care Facility I've Seen"

I really like it here. My mom is on the memory care floor called Life Guidance. It's a locked area within the assisted living facility. The staff's friendliness and responsiveness are huge positives. I've been very pleased with key staff members: admissions, concierge, wellness center, Life Guidance director, and everyone on that floor. Even though there's often leadership change, I've had a good experience with the executive director. I've visited about 15 memory care floors in various places, and this is the best one I've seen, including NYC, Riverside, Bronx, Yonkers, Southern VT, and Mass. The food is decent, with fresh salads and fruit daily, which is nice. However, they do not accept Medicaid after private paying for a while.

"Unclean Establishment, Money-Hungry Owners"

The place is just full of dirt and germs constantly, no surprise they have to lock down and quarantine so often. I wouldn't advise anyone who loves their family to place them here. Remember, it's just a business to them — be ready, they'll try to take every cent that you have.

The Atria experience was pretty disappointing. Even simple requests that my parents made weren't fulfilled. The food was just plain awful! I'm pretty flexible with my eating and even I had a hard time with it. On a positive note, they did have some cool activities and the lady in charge really cares about making them fun. But the overall mood from the employees was far from happy. It was clear they weren't treated or paid well. As nice as the place looked on the outside, it's been really rough for my parents living there.

They sometimes run out of things like eggs and cake, which is frustrating. The food quality is okay for institutional food. They have amazing activities and outings. They’ll even take you to the library if you’re the only one who wants to go. There’s a lot to do, like watching the Dead Sea Scrolls, music concerts, arts and crafts, knitting groups, and movies. The person in charge really cares about helping people and sets up activities based on what you’re interested in. They even have brain teasers every day.

"Perfect Choice for Mom"

I chose Atria Riverdale for my mom because it has the services she needs and is close to family and friends. She gets three meals daily and wears a waterproof wrist alert band for emergencies. She can also pull one of three alert devices in her apartment if needed. My mom still needs help from an aide, and she can keep her own or get one from Atria. I can easily talk to those in charge if I have any questions. After just two days, my mom is starting to do things without her aide. She is coming alive again and is happy.

"Solid Option with a Few Hiccups"

We really like Atria Riverdale. The workers are nice and caring, and I think my Aunt is being taken good care of by the Wellness team. There are lots of things to do, the place is always clean, there's a nice patio, and, surprisingly, pets are allowed. The food is okay. It's a short ten-minute walk from the subway. The only problems we've had are that management changes a lot, and the staff won't help clean up after pets. Also, if someone falls, they won't assist until they call an EMT to make sure no one gets hurt.

"Elderly Friend Mistreated and Ignored at Assisted Living Facility"

My elderly friend, who's 91, joined this assisted living home and she's been living there. But only three days in, she had her things stolen. To make matters worse, the person in charge of housekeeping had the nerve to approach her, asking her to empty her pockets, as they suspected she's the one who took the items. Then, to her shock, they gave her a bill amounting to $11,000. She was utterly confused as she had no idea what the bill was for. It nearly put her health at risk! Regardless of how many times I called, no one from the management team had the decency to return my calls and clarify the situation. Furthermore, she suffered a fall and no one from Atria bothered to inform us or provide updates about her health status.
