Five Star recently raised prices. New food service didn't improve. Heat and AC problems due to old building. Staff responsive but still problems. Overall, recommend despite critiques. Roof and safety assured. Staff friendly.

"Great Meals and Helpful Staff Make This Community Recommendable"
I'm happy with how things are going for my mom at this place. The staff sometimes have trouble communicating, but they're trying hard to fix problems and answer my questions. The meals here are really impressive, with lots of variety and delicious flavors. I would definitely suggest it to anyone interested.

"Staff Changes Impact Quality and Dining Experience"
I would suggest this place to others. The staff is going through a big change, which is why I gave it a 3-star rating. The nurses on the 3rd floor, particularly [name removed], are really good. However, the meals and dining options seem a bit dull and repetitive.

"Friendly Staff, Activities Need Improvement"
The workers at the place were nice and looked like they cared about the people living there. But the things to do there weren’t that great. My family member didn’t really join in on the fun and was just chilling in other spots around the place. I didn’t get any news about them taking part in the stuff there was to do. I’m thinking maybe the workers didn’t have what they needed to make the activities good and get everyone to join in.

"Comfortable and Friendly Assisted Living with Varied Activities and Services"
My loved one feels very comfortable here. Everyone is really friendly and helpful. The safety measures are great. They offer lots of activities like library visits, performances, book clubs, games, fitness classes, movies, and happy hours for residents in independent living. An added bonus is that additional services like medication distribution come with a fee, but are available. There's a laundry room and dry cleaning services, plus a taxi service billed monthly if used."

"Mixed Experience but Overall Recommendable Assisted Living Facility"
Our first time here wasn't great, but we sorted things out. When we had problems, the boss acted quickly. Until now, the care's been okay, and he's happy when I visit. They've got fun activities every day. Right now, visits inside are limited, and laundry's been a bit tricky. Still, I'd suggest it to others.

"Luxury Feel with Personalized Care: A Unique Assisted Living Experience"
During COVID, activities were limited, but before, they had beading, painting, and crafts. My mom loved those. Compared to others, this felt like a luxury apartment first, not just assisted living. It seemed like normal living—clean, modern, recently renovated. My mom had a unique medical situation, and this was the only place that listened and found creative ways to care for her. Other places didn't seem prepared, but this community took the time to understand her needs and welcomed her in.

"Mixed Experience: Assisted Living Facility Review"
This place is pretty clean. Most staff are good. Nurses are great, friendly, and responsive. Before Covid-19, service coordinators weren't helpful, especially with special needs. Caregivers are good but slow to update us. They used to showcase resident art and offer varied programs. Memory care services are weak despite having a department. Not well-suited for higher care needs, better for mobile folks.

"Great Place with Friendly Staff and Good Amenities"
I looked at many places for my mom, and Five Star was the best. It looked the nicest and felt like a fancy apartment building. They were very helpful in figuring out my mom's needs and making things work for her. The nurses and staff are super friendly and always help with our requests. They have great things for the residents like a gym, a pretty library, and a business center with computers and printers. The food is okay, and they have a restaurant-style dining area with menus and a hostess. The dining staff know what each resident likes and doesn't like. I'm happy my mom is in a safe and stable place.

"Unchecked Bug Issue Plaguing High-rated Yonkers Facility."
My folks have been residents at the so-called 5-star Yonkers for over half a decade. However, in the recent year, there's been a growing issue with bugs, particularly annoying flies, in the living spaces and corridors. It seems apartments above the kitchen/dining area are having it worse. It's heartbreaking to watch my parents swat away 6 or 7 big flies on a daily basis, interfering with their meals and personal space. I brought this up with the management awhile back, yet the director, [name removed], hasn't given any feedback. The exterior may be deceptive - be cautious of this place. Would you pick an apartment suffering from an unresolved pest issue? Lately, something about this property doesn't feel right.

"Okay Facility, Extra Services Costly and Supplies Not Included"
The place is okay - it has good service features like cleaning and washing. But there are some extra features they call "level 3" service that cost $750 more each month, over the pricey $8000 for the special memory care studio. They say they use something called a Montessori-based system and I'm not sure what that means. We also have to buy all the stuff, like pads, diapers and other stuff - I thought the place would provide those but they don't.

My dad lives in the independent living apartments here. It’s an affordable choice for us, which is great. The place is lovely. The lounge area is fantastic, and the grounds are beautiful. My dad enjoys all the daily activities they offer, and they even provide rides to the doctor’s office. I highly recommend this community.

"Mom’s New Home Is Wonderful!"
My mom, who just lost my dad, moved into 5 Star two weeks ago. The Move-in Coordinator was amazing and really helped her settle in. They even had staff help hang pictures, get rid of boxes, and find a place for her Christmas decorations. She quickly got to know the building and took a tour of the library, beauty salon, and gift shop. She also got her mailbox key and learned about all the services available to her. The cleaning crew came on her first Monday and did a fantastic job cleaning her apartment, including vacuuming, dusting, and washing her towels and sheets. They change her sheets every week. At dinner, she was placed with a nice group of residents so she wouldn’t feel alone. Her granddaughter stayed with her for the first few nights. Even though she’s 90, she feels at home after living in Florida for over 40 years. Now she goes to Tai Chi class every day and has already enjoyed pet day, where they bring in dogs for the residents to interact with. When she moved from Florida to New York, she had to change her HMO. Luckily, there’s a doctor in the building who takes HMOs, so we quickly switched her insurance to avoid any coverage problems. There are also local pharmacies that deliver. As the weeks go by, she’ll join other residents for grocery shopping and trips to local stores using 5 Star’s transportation. While all her meals in the dining room are delicious and healthy, she has also ordered pizza and Chinese food from nearby restaurants on nights when her granddaughter stays over! She’s excited for her 91st birthday in April. The residents will have a big party at the end of the month to celebrate everyone with April birthdays, and they even have surf and turf with the staff!

"Excited for Mom’s Move to 5 Star!"
My 91-year-old mom is moving into 5 Star tomorrow. We’ve been working with the staff for the past month, and the Move-in Coordinator has been super helpful with our move from Florida to NYC. Everyone, from the front desk receptionist to the restaurant waitresses, is very patient, skilled, and polite. For example, one waitress was very patient while helping a hearing-impaired resident order her meal. The food is excellent, with big, fresh portions that are reasonably priced using the point system. The desserts are homemade and delicious. All the public bathrooms are clean, and there are always many cleaning staff around when I visit. The residents are often chatting and enjoying their time together in the public areas, and many watch the movie of the day in the screening room. My mom’s one-bedroom apartment is very large for NYC standards, and the view is breathtaking. I can’t wait for my mom to move in and enjoy this great atmosphere!

"Pleasant Surprise After One Month at Five Star of Yonkers"
I’m writing this review after my mom has been at Five Star of Yonkers for one month. Moving my 90-year-old mom from her home of 50 years was a tough choice, but I believe we made the right decision. Even though it's still a bit of a change for her, Five Star seems like a great fit. The facility is nice and well-kept. Since my mom lives in an independent apartment, I can’t comment on the assisted living services directly. However, her apartment is modern and comfortable, with amazing views of the Hudson River. They provide weekly light housekeeping and she enjoys a buffet breakfast and a three-course dinner each day. The dining room is inviting, the food is good, and there’s a variety of choices, which is better than many other places we looked at. They offer a lot of activities, including trips to museums, stores, and even the Yonkers casino. One highlight is the Thursday afternoon "Happy Hour" with an open bar, tasty snacks, and live music. The staff has been mostly cheerful and helpful. Special thanks to the team in the dining room, the Move-in Coordinator, who made the transition easier. In terms of cost, Five Star offers a better deal compared to other senior living facilities in Westchester and Rockland Counties. We got a promotional rate due to their renovations, but even regular rates are reasonable compared to the high rents at other places. I know everyone's situation is different, but I hope this review helps someone in a similar position.

"Assisted Living at Yonkers Falls Short, Lacks Care and Humanity"
This Yonkers assisted living home isn't what it used to be. The happiness of the folks living here isn't prioritized anymore. Here's the scoop: They can't keep their staff. And it's worse for the management. They've cut down on dining staff too, which means not-so-fast service. There are lesser happy hours, and the fun activities are more budget than fancy. During holidays, there's no staff member who goes around to make sure everyone's feeling at home. And get this, you've to give a 10-day notice if you're planning on bringing a guest for dinner. The dining boss made my grandma sob because she wouldn't let our cousins have dinner with us. That was unprecedented. It wouldn’t have been an issue in the past, but now, it seems okay with the higher-ups. Even the corporate guys don’t take our pleas into account. Please consider some other place that's kinder and more caring - should've done that ourselves. (And yes, the rent hikes by about 3% every year).

"Great Care and Convenient Location at Five Star Premier"
At Five Star Premier at Yonkers, one of the best things about this assisted living place is their care. They have a lot of staff, which is great for someone who needs help. My mother-in-law has trouble seeing and gets really wonderful care. It's a generally good place. The location is very convenient. The amenities downstairs aren't as good as some other places, and the activities aren't as good either. They do have a winter garden that the residents can use. She likes the food there. They have a good social worker who is very involved, which has really helped her adjust. The management has also been very helpful in meeting her needs. Overall, things have really worked out here.

"Superb care, safe, compassionate staff, and interactive memory programs"
My loved one has advanced Alzheimer's and has lived in the memory care unit at Five Star since 2009. He’s always comfortable and happy here. The activities and memory support programs are excellent and really hands-on. I visit often and appreciate how kind and caring the staff is. Everyone on this floor is treated with respect and dignity. The nurses always call me if any needs come up, and the cost is very reasonable compared to other places I’ve looked at. From day one, I could tell my loved one was more at ease here, surrounded by people going through similar challenges. He’s much safer now, especially since he used to wander and had close calls at home with kitchen fires. What’s also great is that I can bring my dog to visit the memory care unit, and the residents enjoy interacting with him. Every time I visit, there’s a cheerful vibe with music and nice decor. The residents have freedom to walk around, including on a safe outdoor terrace. This is a wonderful place, and I’m so thankful for the amazing staff I've come to know over the years.

"Impressive place with friendly staff and nice facilities"
I was really impressed by this place. I toured many communities during my search! It was a nice facility, very clean and well-kept. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. However, I’m not sure if the atmosphere and location would be something my loved one would feel comfortable with. She is from the Midwest, and this might be a little too fancy and urban for her tastes. I liked that in this community, the base price included the first level of care, and you can add more services later if needed.

"He loves it here!"
I haven’t visited yet, but I’ve talked to him every day for 12 years. His family visits often and they really like it. He says he’s very happy there. He gets the New York Times delivered and signed up for a book delivery service since he didn’t bring all his books from his apartment. Another friend who talks to him at least five times a week has visited and says it’s very nice. He had a couple of heart issues the first month and spent a night in the hospital, but he’s settled down now and is perfectly fine. He has HBO and regular TV. He’s tried a few activities, and they have a cocktail hour once a week. He’s not the most social person, but I suggested he start a book club, though they might already have one. He loves the linen service and says he’s spoiled. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great assisted living facility.

"Lots of activities, food variety could improve"
Sometimes the meal planning could be better. The food is great, but occasionally the choices aren’t what I’d prefer. For example, they serve rice twice in a dish—once with vegetables and then again in the soup. But at least there are options. The trickiest part is finding doctors; luckily, the transportation service is fantastic. There’s always something happening, making it tough to decide what to do.

"Nice, but increasing resident dissatisfaction"
My mother has lived here for 5-6 years. It has changed hands 2-3 times in that period, and the care and responsiveness have gone down a bit. When she first moved in, many employees were social workers, including the salespeople and the overseer of senior life. The sales director talked to her about waiting until she was ready and not rushing—no pressure, only compassion. They had team meetings to address issues like residents falling asleep in public areas, looking into why it was happening and how to help. Now it is more of a business model. The apartments and facilities are beautiful but pricey. My mother lives in a large 1110 sq. ft. apartment with 2 beds and 2 baths. Activities vary, with lots of card playing and movies (a plus for some, boring for others), and some trips to restaurants, stores, museums, and shows. There are also 2 days a week for transportation for local errands and 2 other days for local doctors' appointments. A nearby pharmacy delivers once a day. Staff are very helpful. When residents can't open a jar, they bring it down to meals and someone opens it for them. If they can't get their cable to work, someone comes to help with that too. There have been issues with air conditioning not working well in individual apartments and common areas. At one point, it seemed they were keeping the hallways warmer in the summer to save money, causing minor breathing difficulties for some residents. Residents complain that the food is not as good anymore, but I have not noticed that when I eat there. The number of food choices has decreased, and residents are not happy about it, but there are still many choices. When my mother moved in, there were "heart healthy" choices on the menu, but not anymore. One resident, told by her doctor to reduce salt, couldn't get adjusted meals and moved to a different facility. In the years my mother has been there, the monthly price has increased from $6100 to almost $7200. New residents are getting nicer apartments for much less because of the economy, which adds to the disgruntlement. On the other hand, when we looked into switching apartments to downsize, she was given the same price as a newcomer.

"Hugely Disappointed with Assisted Living Facility and Resident Care"
I totally disliked this assisted living place. It upset me that they separate those with memory problems from the other residents. The folks we met on the assisted living floor didn't appear to be too thrilled. What's worse, they treated their birds in a way that shocked us - you shouldn't keep birds if you don't know how to properly care for them. It's just terrible. It worries me to think - if that's how they treat their birds, how would they handle my mom! It's awful. The staff on the assisted living floors seemed friendly to one another, but I didn't see that friendliness given to those living there. The takeaway brownie they provided was a good gesture, but really, it was needed. I'd rather they put the money into better caring for the residents, instead of fancy decorations and promoting their place.

"Good Riverdale Location, Bigger Units, but Pricier Than River Walk"
This place isn't as appealing as River Walk at The Hebrew Home for the Aged, and it costs more too. However, unlike River Walk, this place offers 2BR units and, for the most part, its apartments are notably bigger. Being situated in Riverdale is definitely a big advantage.
