"Assisted Living Facility Falls Short on Amenities and Safety"
Visited with my mom. First thing we noticed: the food was really terrible. They served "Millbrook Chicken" every night. The cottages need updating badly. Sidewalks have cracks, paint chipping, freezing cold laundry rooms, and a big hole in the roof. No remotes for the garages; no walking trails, pool, gardening, or outside activities. The resident pick-up car is old, rusted, and missing hubcaps. It feels more like a nursing home than Assisted Living. Most residents seem to be in very poor health, often using walkers. Not suitable for independent and active individuals. Safety concerns as desk isn't staffed 24/7; no visible security. Hospital is 15 miles away down rural roads. Ambulance is volunteer-run (5 miles away). No staff seen during the night; potential safety risk. But staff was nice.

"Questionable safety and Lackluster amenities at Assisted Living Facility"
I stopped by this assisted living facility with my mom. The first thing that stood out was the uninspiring food they served, particularly a dish called "Millbrook Chicken" which seemed to be a regular on the menu. I share the concerns voiced in other reviews about the conditions of the cottages in need of a serious makeover – the paths had cracks, paint was peeling, and their laundry rooms felt more like big, icy refrigerators. Even saw one with a gaping hole in its ceiling. Garage remotes were nonexistent, but from what I could tell, cars weren't in heavy rotation here, to begin with. I was disappointed by the lack of amenities like walking trails, a pool, or even places to garden. They didn’t have many outdoor activities on offer. Further, the vehicle used to transport residents to their meals was visibly old, rusted and even missing hubcaps. The establishment felt more like a nursing home than an assisted living facility. It was hard to miss the frail health of many residents, with most seen using walkers, making it more suitable for someone seeking a nursing home setup instead of independent living. They did a good job with the maintenance of the place, however, the lack of things to do and engage with could be limiting for the independent and more active elders. Like others, I also found the safety of this place questionable. No staff at the desk around the clock and the lack of clear cut information about what happens post 11 pm if and when aid is needed raised red flags. A number of residents I spoke to hadn’t seen or heard about any security personnel. In case of emergencies, the nearest hospital is a considerable distance away, along winding country roads and the local ambulance service are volunteers located some 5 miles away. With all this taken into account, I would be hesitant to leave my mom here overnight, fearful of her needing late-night assistance. Yet, it's worth mentioning the staff were consistently courteous and friendly.

"A smaller but friendly community for mom"
I visited this place for my mom. It feels smaller than what we wanted, but the staff is really positive. They have a good menu with many meal choices, and I liked that they offer activities. We recommend families check out this community.

"Not as fancy, more like a nursing home, but nice people."
This place costs more than the one we picked. It's not as nice. People are friendly, but it feels more like a nursing home. We wanted something with more independence.

"I liked everything, but family chose differently."
I really enjoyed touring this community. Everything looked clean and well-kept. The staff was very kind and friendly, and they offer many resources for the residents. It’s a great community, but my family decided it wasn’t the best fit for me. Overall, it was a nice tour, and the community seems great.

"A Mixed Experience at the Assisted Living Facility"
I visited an assisted living facility recently, and here’s what I found: Nice People: The staff members were friendly and welcoming. Lovely Apartments: The independent living apartments were beautiful. Well-Maintained Grounds: The outdoor areas were well-kept. Spacious Apartments: The living spaces were roomy. However, there were some downsides: Views: Unfortunately, the views from the apartments weren’t great. Some faced an old brick building in the courtyard, while others overlooked a parking lot. Property Condition: The property needed maintenance. I noticed chipped paint, cracks, and rust, especially around the cottages. Landscaping: The landscaping around the cottages was lacking, except where residents had made an effort. Laundry Rooms: The shared laundry rooms were outdated, with cobwebs and dead flies. There was no place to fold clothes, and I don’t think they were heated. Dining Areas: Despite misleading photos, the dining room and cafe furniture were quite chipped. Limited Activities: Surprisingly, there were no outdoor activities offered onsite, even though the property was spacious. No Pool: Unfortunately, there was no pool for water aerobics enthusiasts. Greenhouse Misunderstanding: We were told there was a greenhouse for gardening, but it turned out to be a storage shed. Small Gym: The gym was small. In summary, if you’re interested in the apartments, it might be worth considering this facility. However, keep in mind the limitations mentioned above.

"Property Has Potential but Lacks Upkeep and Outdoor Amenities"
The folks are really kind here. We took a tour of a beautiful, roomy independent living apartment. The surroundings and view are rather unpleasant though, either an old brick structure or a parking area. The overall state of the property leaves a lot to be desired. We noticed peeling paint, cracks, and rust - evident signs of overdue upkeep, particularly around the cottages. The landscape around the cottages is overrun with weeds, only improving where the residents have personally taken care of it. Many of these cottages seemed unoccupied, which could explain the lack of attention to their upkeep and landscaping. The cottages share old, worn-out laundry rooms that need new machines and a fresh layer of paint. The laundry rooms we saw weren't in the best conditions; they were dusty, home to dead bugs, and didn’t offer any heat or a folding area. The dining experience was great, even though the images of the dining room and cafe don't quite match reality. The furniture in these areas was notably damaged. Despite the property being massive, there aren't any onsite outdoor amenities. Not even a walking path on their vast land parcel. The most significant letdown was the lack of a swimming pool, especially as my mom enjoys water aerobics. We were told mention of a greenhouse, but all we saw was essentially a storage shed. This was disappointing as it could have been a great amenity given the farming backdrop and origins of the residents. The gym was also on the smaller side. This place could work for someone who prefers apartment living and leads a less active lifestyle. Their transportation services appeared good enough for errands to the pharmacy or grocery shopping.

"Disappointing Assisted Living Facility Needs Major Improvements"
I wasn't very impressed with this place. It's really old. My opinion is only based on the cottages because that's all we saw. When we looked at the cottages, the first thing we noticed was the paint chipping, cracks, rust on the doors, and poorly maintained landscaping behind them. Also, the shared washer and dryers were old and mismatched, and you have to go outside to get to them. They were in a really dirty room. I know a laundry room doesn't have to look fancy, but these were just awful. The cottages weren't much better. They had chipped countertops and old appliances, and they looked very outdated. The outside areas needed a lot of maintenance and landscaping help. It might seem small, but if you're going to have garages in a retirement community, they should be remote-controlled. Do you really expect someone over 70 to get out of their car and manually pull up a garage door in the snow? The 24-hour security isn't exactly what they claim. They have someone until 11 pm, but after that, you have to ring the reception desk, which no one is sitting at. It takes 10 rings until it even starts ringing, and then a security guard (we couldn't figure out if they were onsite or offsite) finally answers. I couldn't leave my mom somewhere that wasn't staffed 24/7. If she calls, it's probably an emergency, and I want someone to pick up right away! Ten rings is a whole minute. Imagine lying in pain or having a heart attack and waiting for a full minute. That's unreasonable. I think their claim of 24/7 help available is exaggerated. You'd be better off calling 911 directly. If that's the case, what are you paying The Fountains for that safety feature? The furniture in the dining room and cafe was badly chipped. This place really needs more money and someone who understands what seniors need to make it better.

"Facility Fails To Meet Expectations: Misleading About Care"
I was hardly blown away by this place. It's seriously outdated for an assisted living facility. I'm only talking about the cottages as those are what we viewed. The first thing we noticed when we walked in were chips in the paint, cracks, rusted doors and terrible landscaping. The shared washers and dryers, which you have to walk outside to reach, were old and mismatched in a pretty grimy room. Sure, a laundry room isn't meant to look chic, but these were truly awful. The cottages were no better. Countertops chipped, appliances outdated - the whole place needs a significant facelift. The exterior needs loads of work and an upgrade in its landscaping. A simple addition like automatic garages would be nice - it's ridiculous to assume elderly folks can manually lift a garage door, especially in snowy weather. The 24-hour security they advertised is quite misleading. They only have staff available until 11 p.m. After that, you'll have to call the reception (with no one manning it) and wait for 10 rings before it redirects to a security guard who we couldn't tell where he was located. I'd seriously worry about leaving my mom somewhere without round-the-clock staff. If she calls with an emergency, every second counts - 10 rings (which equals a full minute) could be catastrophic. So, their claims of 24/7 assistance are not exactly accurate. You're probably better off calling 911 directly, which makes me question what we'd be paying The Fountains for. Even the furniture in the dining room and café was in bad shape. This facility truly needs an infusion of funds, and a management team that really understands the needs of senior citizens.

"Scenic retirement facility in urgent need of crucial updates!"
This place is centered in the beauty of the countryside, perfect for nature lovers. However, the rest of it doesn't match up to the pretty surroundings at all. The whole site is old and worn out. The cottages were a mess with the paint chipping off the whole side of the buildings. They really should wash the bricks rather than continuing to apply paint over it. Inside, each layout is a bit different, but none of the kitchens have been renovated since the 60s, with pink and mustard countertops and linoleum floors. This place could be amazing if the management company, Watermark, would put in the effort to update everything when rooms are vacant. Instead, they try to attract people with "special deals" so they don't have to do any updating. They should switch from carpet to hardwood floors and carpet is impractical for elderlies using canes or walkers. Plus, the places only had air conditioning in one room. The gym had barely any equipment and there's no pool or sauna. The photos on the website make it seem much better than it is. The dining room has no feeling and only looks like a dull nursing home dining area. The pictures make the cafe appear pleasant, but it really looks like a gas station convenience store. The nearest hospital in Poughkeepsie, is far, about 20 miles away. Only Ruthie seems to be in sales, and she's really hard to get hold of after the first visit. She doesn't seem to see an issue with the condition of the place, saying she likes living in her big trailer with similar furnishings.

"Watermark's Aging Facility in Dire Need of Upgrades"
The setting here is stunning, deep in the countryside – it's an ideal spot if you enjoy that sort of thing. But the rest of the property is nowhere near as appealing as the natural surroundings. As we toured the entire facility, I couldn't help but notice how old and worn down everything seemed. The cottages in particular were in a sad state, with the exterior paint chipping and peeling off the brick. And it wasn't just a small patch here or there, I'm talking about the entire sides of buildings. Just pressure washing the brick would make a huge difference. Watermark has the potential to make this a fantastic community if only they'd improve the places when they become vacant. But instead, they keep offering deals to fill these out-of-date dwellings without making necessary renovations. They should seriously consider upgrading kitchens with granite, replacing pergo and linoleum with engineered hardwood floors. Having carpet in a home where elderly residents are likely to use canes and walkers, or spill their food and drinks, is a terrible idea. And some of the cottages had AC in only one room. The gym was basic, and features like a sauna, pool or water aerobics classes were missing. And don't let the website photos fool you. The dining room had no atmosphere at all, it really looked like a typical nursing home eating area. The advertised 'quaint country market' is more akin to a shoddy 7-Eleven. Plus, the nearest hospital is a good 20 miles away in Poughkeepsie. Ruthie, who seems to be the only sales staff person, is extremely hard to reach after your initial visit. Despite encouraging you to "ask any questions", she never replies. She doesn't see the sad state of the places as an issue, proudly declaring that she lives in a large trailer with formica countertops and linoleum floors.

"Mixed Experience at Assisted Living Facility for Alzheimer's Care"
The place isn't bad, but having Alzheimer's patients with us can be boring. I had to keep reminding the staff about my instructions. The food is tasty, and things improved once the caregivers understood better.

"Alzheimer's care integration lacking, food and staff improve."
The place mixes up Alzheimer's care with assisted living, which isn't great for activities if you're still sharp. Even though I gave clear instructions, I had to step in a lot. The food is tasty, and once the caregivers understood what was needed, things got better for her.

"Great place but location too far for Dad - 4 stars"
My 75-year-old Dad liked visiting here. His main worry was about the location. The Fountains is really big and nice; it costs $4650.00 each month for a studio, but it’s worth it for what they provide. The location was too far out of town for my Dad’s liking.

"Looks amazing, need prices. A..."
This place looks amazing! I just need to know the prices. It seems to be around $3500 to $4000 per month. There's also a one-time fee of $4000 for new carpet, paint, and other updates. They have transportation and an on-site doctor, which sounds perfect.

"A wonderful place for seniors!"
I am very impressed with The Fountains. This is the third place my mom has been, and it is way better than the other two. It looks nice, has lots of activities, and the food is served respectfully (no trays of mystery meat here!). Most importantly, everyone at The Fountains is a pleasure to deal with. I would describe the staff as patient, interested, and kind, from the marketing person to the aides. I am very impressed!

"A Truly Personalized Experience for Seniors!"
They have been absolutely amazing! They really make things personal for each resident. From the maintenance crew to the move-in coordinator, who made sure everything was perfect, and the nursing staff is fantastic. The food is delicious, especially the salads—they're incredible! I found their prices to be very reasonable, and they don’t just follow a standard approach. If I could give any advice to families, it would be to visit several places. Take the time to set up appointments to meet the staff, and try to be there during mealtime so you can see how they serve the residents. It's hard to know if a community is the right fit unless you really explore multiple options.

"Mom loves it there!"
Mom's happy there; it's a great place. The atmosphere is nice and smaller than her last place, making the transition easier. She enjoys the food and loves that she can bring wine on Fridays to share with friends. Although she wishes there were more bridge clubs, she appreciates the many craft options available, even if she doesn't do many. The staff is caring and treats everyone like family. They also help her get into town when needed for errands like going to the pharmacy or bookstore. Overall, it feels like a small town.

"Toured it today. Scheduled a visit for Mom in November."
I toured this place today and scheduled a visit with my mom for November. I really liked the facility, and it's the closest one to us. It has about 100 independent living units and 40 assisted living units. There’s currently one 1-bedroom suite available, so I’m eager to move up the lunch meeting. They have nursing and aide staff on-site during the day, and the security staff is EMT-trained. I saw lots of staff around, and the residents seemed very friendly. The rooms are smaller but still nice, and the grounds are beautiful.

"Fewer Services, Same Price, Not Near Anything"
This place is super far from everything! They don't serve as many meals, just 1 or 2 day. It's like other places but with fewer services and no price cut. It's clean, but having everything in a separate building was a worry. There was also no reason to believe you'd get an apartment in the main building, so we feared it would be hard to get around.
