Hearth & Home at Vandalia

"Unprepared Staff, Facility Not Recommended"
The workers at this place aren't ready to handle Alzheimer's. I wouldn't advise anyone to consider it.

"Small, Cozy Assisted Living with Clean Facilities and Fresh Food"
This assisted living facility is very tidy and runs smoothly. The manager is friendly and accessible. Staff are both helpful and effective. It's a small, comfortable place. Meals are tasty and prepared daily.

"Poor Training for Alzheimer's Care at Hearth and Home"
Our time at Hearth and Home at Vandalia wasn't pleasant. I realized the employees aren't educated enough to handle the tough situations that Alzheimer's Patients create.

"Mixed Experience at Assisted Living"
I visited this place, and it was really nice. The building was clean, and the staff were friendly. The room didn’t impress me, so we continued our search.

"Disappointing Experience with Poor Communication and Unimpressive Rooms"
I did not have a good experience. There were a lot of problems. When you called, you couldn't get ahold of anybody. Nobody answered the phone. They keep the public areas pretty nice, but the residents' rooms aren't as good as they look from the outside. Overall, it just was not a good experience.

I absolutely loved this community. It had big homey common areas and nice dining facility in each of the 3 wings. The residents seemed friendly and happy. Unfortunately it is out of our price range.

"The Perfect Place for Mom – Better Than We Imagined!"
My mom has been at Hearth and Home for 6 months, and my grandmother was here for a few years before that. The staff is amazing! We’ve been able to join in on fun outings and activities, keeping our family busy and happy. We were worried that my mom wouldn’t feel at home, but it’s been even better than when she was at home. She’s made new friends, come out of her shell, and enjoys a better quality of relationships. The staff is super helpful and accommodating, and the food is great. We’re really happy with her care. If you’re looking for a place, this is it! My mom often tells us she loves her home.

"Avoid this Deceitful, Understaffed and Dismal Assisted Living Facility"
This facility is undeniably dismal. The workers are chronically exhausted due to a lack of pay and never-ending shifts. The management consistently understaffs and then denies the employee shortage issue. The head honcho is a deceitful exploiter of the residents. She bears a scandalous past involving relationships with families of the residents. Her presence at the facility is unpredictable and, when she is around, she avoids interaction with families. The quality of food served is atrocious and inexpensive. The facility seems to have a problem with letting the residents indulge in basic luxuries such as sodas. The chief nurse, appointed by the corporation, behaves unethically too. She assured us falsely about individual attention and comprehensive care provided for my dad. She blatantly lied saying they had an all-inclusive healthcare system in place for dad. Trusting her is a mistake. If she departs, the facility might become considerably more tolerable!

"Negligent Care at Assisted Living Facility"
My mom, who is suffering from dementia, was frequently left uncleaned. There were two occasions when her injuries went untreated until we lodged a complaint.

"Facility Declines After Management Change; Would Not Recommend"
My mom was at this place from January 2015 until December 2016. At first, it was fine, but then things got worse and worse until we started worrying about her safety. Once [Removed] took over, the assisted living facility wasn't as good. The only bright spot was Cheryl, the person in charge of activities. She was a blessing to everyone. [Removed] made my mother sleep in her chair in the hallway and didn't let the staff put her in bed. The place had cockroaches, there wasn't a secure area for those who needed memory care, and the building wasn't clean. There weren't enough staff to take care of everyone properly. I wouldn't suggest sending your family member to stay here.

"Great Consideration: Affordable Option with Caring Staff"
We really thought about going with Hearth & Home for my mom. The person who sells there is super nice, knows a lot, and really thinks about things. I felt good right when I walked in and all the way through. I thought my mom and my family would feel good and sure too. We ended up not picking Hearth & Home because they can't accept Medicaid if we need it later. Their prices each month are good, especially compared to how much other places cost around here. But we might have to move my mom later because of our family's money situation.

"Great place with friendly staff and lots of activities!"
The staff at this place are really friendly, caring, and respectful to both the residents and their families. They always try to involve everyone in as many activities as they want to do. There are plenty of activities available. It's hard to find a better place that feels more like home.

"Wonderful Staff and Excellent Care"
I have nothing but good things to say about the staff and facility at Hearth and Home. Nate, the resident manager, and Leah, the head nurse, went out of their way to help us move my mom to their facility. They even stayed with her at night until she got used to the place. My mom has Alzheimer's, so this was really important for her. I love that there isn't a separate memory care unit here. My mom could join in all the activities with the other residents, which made her happy. The staff is very well-trained and knew how to handle my mom when she got upset. No matter when I visited, the staff was always busy helping residents and talking to them. There are lots of activities for the residents, and my mom especially loved the day they toured a winery! From this experience, I learned that the level of care is more important than the cost. Even though it was hard for my siblings and me to decide to move our mom to assisted living, Nate, Leah, and the rest of the staff took great care of her and us. We knew it was the best place for her.

"Very Impressive Assisted Living Facility!"
We visited this community while exploring care options for a family member. I was really impressed by what I saw at Hearth & Home! The building was new, looked nice, very clean, and well-maintained. The staff were all very friendly! Although it wasn't our final choice, based on our experience, we can definitely recommend it as a place worth considering.

"Impressed by Facility Interior"
I liked the inside of this place. The layout was simple, and the rooms looked clean. I didn't see many staff members, so I worry about my Dad's needs. I'll need to visit again before deciding.

"Inadequate Safety and Poor Memory Care at Facility"
Our time at this place wasn't pleasant. It wasn't as safe as my family member needed it to be, and the people working there didn't manage the memory care properly. My relative had a tendency to wander off, and within just a few weeks, he tried to escape. They sent him to the hospital and told us he couldn't come back.

"Great care and friendly staff!"
They've been doing a great job here! The care is good, and the staff are super friendly. The place looks nice and is always very clean. I think they could improve communication with families—I'm always the one starting conversations about my loved one's care. Also, my loved one mentioned the food could be better.

"Crucial to ask about nursing care and amenities beforehand"
This place does have nurses around all day and night. But, a couple here needed special care, like overnight catheter assistance. Sadly, they had to leave because the facility didn't have enough nursing staff and had to hire someone else. I looked them up online and called them thrice to figure out what to ask. Firstly, if they provide 24-hour nursing care, like having a registered nurse (RN) or a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) available all day. Secondly, I asked about the overall cost and what's included, and if they help residents to the dining room, or bring meals if needed, and if they offer transportation. Since they lacked 24-hour care, it wasn't the best fit.
