"Portland Place: Caring Staff, Some Challenges"

The staff at Portland Place was the best part. They were caring and wonderful to my mom and all of us. The manager, who has lots of experience, hires great staff. They stick around, which keeps things running smoothly. The marketing director was amazing too. The place always smelled good because they emptied the trash regularly. The food seemed great, but my mom's dementia made it hard for her to notice. Overall, I recommend Portland Place for your family member. However, they pushed it as a final stop for my mom, and as her dementia worsened, we faced challenges. The cost was high, and they don't accept Medicaid once funds run out. We eventually moved her to another facility that's awesome and accepts Medicaid. It's tough caring for a loved one with dementia, but there are good moments too.

"Assisted Living Review: Portland Takes Good Care of Husband"

Portland has been really nice to my husband. They are kind and caring. Thankfully, my husband has a motorized wheelchair which lets him go to meals and activities. He's been with Portland for a couple of months now, and we're still adjusting to his needs. Nothing's perfect, and we're fixing problems. I still work full time because I'm only 63, but I'm there every evening to get him ready for bed. The problems I've had were dealt with quickly and with kindness. Like I said, nothing's perfect. We're aiming for a better rating. There were a couple of issues with meds and hygiene, but my concerns are being heard and fixed so far.

"Portland Place Review Summary"

When we first talked to the folks at Portland Place, they were so kind and professional. It made a tough time feel less stressful. They even said my mom's little dog could live with her! When Mom moved in, the manager was new, and there were some issues with communication among the 12 nurses. But despite that, Mom loves her two-room "apartment." The meals are good, happy hours are fun, and the handyman is fantastic. The cost is high, but Mom's happiness is priceless!

"Friendly Staff and Excellent Care"

Portland Place is a great place for your loved one. They’ve kept me well informed about my dad’s medications and overall care. His room is small but cozy, with a microwave, fridge, and a nice closet. The walk-in shower is excellent. I recommend Portland Place.

"Amazing Staff Made the Difference"

Portland Place was owned by the same people as the place we picked. The prices were about the same, and they were really similar in many ways. But we especially liked the staff at the other place we chose - they were just amazing.

"A Recommended Community for Loved Ones"

I would recommend this community to others looking for a place for their loved ones. It's a smaller community where you can usually get answers to your questions, though leaving messages for our loved one can be challenging. They've recently had administrative and staff changes, which happened during COVID. This has made things a bit harder for our loved one and our family. Compared to other communities nearby, they are more cost-effective. They also have a memory care unit where the staff helps with reminders for waking up, bedtime, and giving medications. We hoped for more activities tailored for memory care and more one-on-one attention for the residents in that unit.

"A Sweet Experience!"

Our time there was awesome! The staff and activities director were fantastic. We’d totally recommend this place. Plus, there’s an ice cream factory nearby!

"Poorly Run Facility, Unresponsive Staff, Unkept Promises at Portland Place"

My family member lived at Portland Place for around a year. The employee turnover rate was shockingly high. Even the upper management was changing constantly – four of them in a single year. Miscommunication was common among the staff. Often, the administrators didn't even know my relative's first name when calling us. The medical record keeping was sloppy with incorrect entries regarding medication. They repeatedly addressed our family member by the wrong name right to his/her face, worsening his/her existing memory problems. Even though the cost covered room cleaning, the housekeeping staff seldom cleaned the room or bathroom. Once, a wheelchair-bound resident needed help to use the restroom and return to her room. Despite being given clear instructions, a nurse assistant made her wait for 14 minutes, while she chatted and laughed with a coworker. They promised us biannual resident evaluations but carried them out every three months instead, each time hiking the fee by $1,000. We weren't even informed. The amount was directly debited from our bank account. There were many instances of staff being impolite to us and our loved one. Even when we tried to contact the upper management, they never responded. I plan on filing a complaint with the Ombudsman about Portland Place. I would not advise anyone to choose this facility. Their administration is inefficient and shows clear lack of empathy towards their residents. They tend to offer false promises and often contradict their own statements. Be sure to record any conversation with them as evidence. While they claim to engage residents in varied activities, virtually nothing is done. Their Facebook posts might show ice cream socials and music sessions, but in reality, they might just conduct bingo once in three months. There's no attention given to stimulating the residents mentally. We were thoroughly upset by them, as were four other families we spoke to, who shared identical complaints. They too were exploring other options for their loved ones.

"Terrible Experience Leads to Regret for Assisted Living Choice"

I would never bring my Mom back to that assisted living center, nor would I ever recommend it to anyone else. My Mom was only there for roughly two months, but it was the most awful experience we could have ever subjected her to...we relocated her and her current place is amazing. I wish we had chosen this place from the start!

"Poor Management and Financial Issues Disappointing Assisted Living Experience"

My family member stayed at Portland Place for about two months. I didn't think it was great because the management wasn't good. There were two different managers during that time, and neither of them could help me with money questions. I had to call their main office instead. The staff, though, were friendly and useful. But overall, my loved one didn't like it there, so they chose to leave.

"Disappointing experience at Portland Place in Sandusky."

Portland Place in Sandusky was a letdown. My relative disliked it. Poor management; fell short of expectations.
