"Mixed Experience: Pleasant Atmosphere, Costly Extras, Unfair Treatment"
The place had air fresheners everywhere to make the air smell nice. Most of the staff was friendly, and the helpers were all very nice. The food was pretty good too. We thought Above & Beyond At The Knights was okay for the price, but it didn't cover everything, so it got expensive over time. My dad stayed in the memory care unit downstairs but got kicked out because he got aggressive with another resident. We didn't think this was fair. We also felt like the management wasn't honest with us about some things, and we didn't like that.

"Neglected Elderly Father Passed Away After Inadequate Care"
The Above and Beyond assisted living center really let my family and me down... My dad was under their care together with Hospice Care, but he got a pressure sore on his foot. At first, they just called it a blister... They said they'd get him to wound care, but never made that happen... His "blister" got infected, leading to sepsis... He had to be rushed to the hospital, and on top of everything else, his foot had gangrene... His wound didn’t just appear overnight, but they never told me how serious it was, only that it was a pressure sore. The folks supposed to help my dad essentially dropped the ball, neglecting proper care... One week after being taken to the hospital, my dad passed away...

"Caring and Qualified Staff at Above and Beyond"
Starting with the director, I am very impressed with the hands-on attention my husband receives. It’s amazing to find a director so highly medically qualified. From the director to the aides and cleaning staff, they all try to please and treat the dementia patients with caring respect and love. My children and I feel very fortunate to have discovered Above and Beyond at the Knights.

"ABK’s heart and care exceed expectations, despite initial challenges"
About a year ago, I wrote a review for Above and Beyond at the Knights (ABK) that now embarrasses me deeply. I want to replace it with this updated review until I can get the old one deleted. When we first placed Mom in ABK, we were overwhelmed with grief and confusion because of her sudden decline into aggressive dementia. I wrote a harsh review during a time when our family was in shock, not recognizing the person Mom had become. But yes, it was her. ABK wasn’t fully prepared for what they were going to face when she arrived, but they bravely took on the challenge. As different approaches to Mom’s care were tried, and some proved difficult at first, we were pressured by other facilities to move her. That’s when I let my anger and fear take over, leading to a terrible review of ABK. I should have taken a moment to think before writing it. Gradually, everything changed. With the focused and loving care from the owner and her kind staff, Mom received such affection and dedication to her well-being that I will always be grateful. The team at ABK has done more for her than we ever could. Mom has even moved from Memory Care to Assisted Living. The challenges of caring for her are handled reasonably, and the management is made up of some of the best and wisest people I’ve ever had the good fortune to meet and trust. The staff is loving and upbeat, despite the difficult conditions they deal with daily. I suggest not focusing on the fact that ABK isn’t perfect (no place is, and neither am I). It might not look like the Taj Mahal, but the care your loved one will receive here is beyond what you can imagine. Above and Beyond at the Knights has a heart bigger than its building. Please give them a chance to do their best for you or your loved one. And the food, made like you would at home, is delicious and nutritious. I am now a volunteer reader at ABK, and my only regret is that I didn’t update my review sooner. My humble apologies to the owner and the staff, and my deepest gratitude. God bless you all.

"Mixed Experience with Assisted Living Facility"
After seven months, the facility rates around 3 or 4 stars. It's clean, and the staff is friendly when helping Mom. However, there's frequent turnover among the staff. We haven't experienced other facilities, as she's only been at A&B. Her care meets her needs adequately.

"Needs Improvement: Care and Communication Lacking"
I’m really let down by how things got worse with the new bosses. The care’s not good anymore, the food’s bad, and sometimes there’s not enough for everyone. I find crumbs and dirt in the rooms where people stay. The nurses don’t tell families how the patients are doing enough. If someone doesn’t want to eat, join in activities, or do their therapy, the workers just don’t care. We need more skilled nurses around the clock on every floor to keep an eye on folks and handle their medicine right. And the staff should be able to talk in all languages, but mostly in clear English. Getting to appointments is super hard. This place is supposed to help people, but they need to do better at getting patients places. We need vans for wheelchairs, not buses with high steps. It’s super important to talk with the people staying and their families so we can fix problems, not just avoid them!

"Assisted Living Facility Falls Short Under New Ownership"
I'm really disappointed with the changes since the new owners took over. The care has gone down, food choices are bad, and there's not enough for everyone. There's even crumbs and dirt in patients' rooms. The nursing staff hardly keeps families updated on patients' status. If a patient doesn't want to eat or join activities, they're not supportive. There should be more trained nurses on each floor 24/7 to watch patients and manage their meds. Staff should also be able to speak better English and other languages. Transportation for appointments is inadequate. Assisted living needs better options like wheelchair vans, not buses with big steps. Communication with patients and families is crucial. Concerns should be addressed openly, not hidden behind closed doors.

"Management Struggles and Negligence in Assisted Living Facility."
When my mom, recently dealing with dementia, got an assessment at the hospital, we were really pleased with how the evaluation made her feel. The evaluation team knew how to engage her and lift her spirit. But then, she was sent to another center run by the same people, but managed by a different person who always seems stressed and on edge, rushing from one crisis to another. The employees openly express their dislike for her and their desire to quit. I believe she's a kind-hearted and intelligent person, but she's not cut out to run this kind of under-resourced center. Each time we see Mom, we spot a major issue that hasn't been addressed properly. Residents have slowly slipped off chairs while staff members just keep folding clothes, my mom's shirt has food stains from breakfast all the way to dinner, and there's even fecal matter left on the bathroom sink from a morning episode. I genuinely believe the manager and the staff are in over their heads. When I confronted them about the poor sanitation, the manager lashed out and the staff leader got confrontational, blaming the whole mess on my mom's roommate.

"Room Odor Disappoints, Otherwise Decent Assisted Living Facility"

"Homey Atmosphere Wanted, Price and Atmosphere Unfavorable"
During our visit to the community, we found the price and atmosphere not quite right for us. I was hoping for a cozy atmosphere with some supervision, but it seemed like it might be too expensive, and the atmosphere wasn't what we were looking for. Another concern was that weekly visits would be too much for us to manage. However, the staff who gave us the tour were really friendly and spent a lot of time showing us around, which we appreciated.

"Assisted Living Facility with Friendly Staff and Upcoming Renovations"
Getting here was hard because Google Maps was wrong, but once I arrived, I was impressed. The staff was super nice and knew everyone's name. The people living there all seemed happy. The building is old, but Brookdale, the new owners, are planning to spend a lot of money to fix it up soon. The rooms are big, with large bathrooms and showers. Residents can decorate their rooms. This place has basic services included in the rent, with extra options you can choose from. It's all on one floor, shaped like a big T. It would be perfect if the halls weren't so long, but hopefully, the updates will make it even better.

"Good Start Until Management Changed"
My mom lived here until they sold the place. It was a nice spot for her and seemed great at first. But when folks started leaving and new bosses took over, things went downhill. I started to worry about my mom's safety and so I moved her out. I'd be cautious about recommending this place at the moment. On a different note, from A Place For Mom was really helpful the first and second time around.

I am really happy with Emeritus at Allentown and would recommend it to others. My father is adjusting well and doing great here. It's a nice community, and we've had a good experience. There are lots of activities for the residents to join in. The food is very good—my father brags about it, and I've tried it too. I'm very satisfied with Emeritus.

"Struggling to Adjust: Mixed Experience at Assisted Living Facility"
We're still adjusting to the place. It was hard to visit during holidays because there weren't enough staff, but everyone was nice. My mom doesn't cooperate much; she doesn't join activities and sometimes refuses therapy, showers, and eating in the dining room. We're not sure how long we can afford to keep her there since she doesn't have much money.

"Highly Recommend"
My brother checked out Emeritus and another place, and he picked Emeritus. I'm really glad he did. Things are going great. I've been there 8 times, and the staff is always super friendly and helps with anything. I've told a few others to check out this place for their loved ones too. The laundry service is awesome. The physical therapy department could be better, but we get that there's not much space for equipment. The food is good, sometimes even great. There's always something fun for the residents to do. There's a school nearby, so kids come to visit, and everyone loves that. They also have nice church services for those who want them.

"Downhill Since Company Takeover, Poor Communication a Concern"
The first two months my dad was there were wonderful, but it's all gone downhill since. Some of the staff are awesome and the only reason my dad is still there is because of the amazing nurses and aides. However, the bosses don't respond to any messages, and ever since the Brookdale Company took over, many staff members left and were not replaced. It was once easy to communicate with managers about my dad's care, but now there's no managers on site and it takes forever to get answers. There has been no information given to families about who the new contacts are. I've sent emails and called, only to hear after weeks that they're no longer working at Emeritus (now Brookdale). When someone leaves, their email and phone are simply not updated.

"Stressful Living Situation, Poor Communication Frustrate Family"
My mother in law has been staying here for a month now. She shares her room with another lady who has dementia and is always near the window. This lady keeps turning up the heat, making the room uncomfortably warm, which really upsets my mother in law. Staff say they're working on it. I know there's a hierarchy here, but it's their job to solve this. They're not telling me anything about this. The staff were so nice when I was signing the paperwork. But I'm frustrated because nothing gets done around here. It's actually a pretty nice place, and I'd really rather not complain.

"Disappointed by lack of care and communication at assisted living."
The facility couldn't meet our needs. There was a tough situation poorly handled. They didn't call me when it happened; I had to call them. They didn't take precautions afterward or have my loved one checked by a hospital. When they said we had to find another place, they didn't explain. They didn't help us find a new place or give us a timeline. It was tough because he was getting better. Margaret, the memory care director, was nice and called me every day to update. Some people didn't like how things were handled. They're delaying my refund, which makes me unhappy, but I still like the place. They have a nice dining room and activity areas, but I'm disappointed they didn't try harder to make it work. Change isn't good for people with Alzheimer's. They have a good program where everyone knows each other's name.

When we were trying to find a place for our family member, Emeritus was the first place we checked out. The people working there were really nice and good at their jobs. The place was really clean. All the people living there seemed really happy and they got along great with the staff. After checking out another place, we picked Emeritus. It was because of how professional they were and also how big the place was and how it was set up. I'd tell anyone that they should think about this place for their family. Thanks for looking after our family member.
