Summit Place of Beaufort

"Mixed Experience at Assisted Living Facility"
In the year my mom has been there, all the staff I originally dealt with have been replaced. Whether I recommend this facility depends on the individual's needs. If they're looking for hospice care to age in place, this isn't the right place.

"Needs improvement in staffing and leadership turnover."
The assisted living facility doesn’t have enough staff or qualified resources to properly care for residents. Leadership turnover is frequent, and while there are some heroes, it’s not sufficient. There’s plenty of room for improvement.

Distressed Daughter
"Unbearable conditions, lack of proper care, and unjust charges. AVOID!"
My Dad was at Oaks of Beaufort for six weeks and it was far from ideal. He was asked to do his own laundry, though he isn't capable, and the remains of packing materials were left scattered in his room for more than two weeks. The bathrooms are too small to navigate with a walker comfortably and there's no ventilation - no fans - which is quite problematic. Additionally, both the toilet paper and towel holders were broken. Dirty clothes were left to pile up and the smell was unbearable. The day staff informed me that the night staff regularly takes naps on the facility's couches instead of working, which in turn causes tension and disagreements amongst the employees. I heard complaints about poor pay and insufficient health benefits from several staff members. The food is far from appetizing and the servers don't seem to be pleased with their jobs. They don't offer any recreational activities for residents and the van, normally used for outings, has been idle for month. To make matters worse, cries for help during the night went unanswered. Their lack of memory care was notable. Towards the end, it seems they couldn't even keep the medicine administration consistent, which scared my dad enough to make him leave. Unjustly, they're charging him for a full extra month, when he officially left before the halfway point of the latest paid month. According to DHEC, they can only charge for two weeks after a resident's departure. Interestingly, several residents and staff members also left at the same time as my dad, all moving to a new place. To sum up, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

"Bus Outings Halted, No Solutions in Sight"
The Oaks, an Atlanta-based assisted living company, bought Summit Place over a year ago. One of the most important things to our family was that Summit Place had a bus that took residents on outings - to lunch, shopping, or just for a drive. The Oaks at Beaufort has not done this for about a year, saying there is a title issue with the bus. It is getting ridiculous that this company can't manage to get the bus registered. I’ve brought this up many times and got no help. I have tried contacting the corporate office, but they never call back. This is important for the residents and should be fixed.

"Be clear about communication and care plans"
You need to be clear about communication from the start. Make sure to discuss the daily schedule, facility routines, care plans, and who speaks for whom. It's important to know how to interact with the staff, especially if the resident's memory or understanding is not great.

"Affordable and Extra Perks!"
I really think it’s great. I’ve even told friends who moved their mom from California about it. My family member joins in Bingo, trivia, and arts and crafts. They also like the exercise. I checked out a few places nearby in Savannah, Pooler, Hilton Head, and Bluffton. Assisted living isn’t cheap, but I appreciated that they didn’t nickel-and-dime us for every little thing.

"Peaceful and Pleasant One Story Community with Staffing Challenges"
We like the Oaks at Beaufort for our loved one because it's all on one floor. It's a smaller place, and the staff are really nice. But like everywhere else, they sometimes have trouble finding enough people to work, so the care isn't always as good as we'd like.

"Decline in Cleanliness and Care at The Oaks Assisted Living"
My folks shifted to The Oaks. At first, we were happy for about 9 months. But when the new boss came in, things got worse. The place became less clean, and the care in the Assisted Living area went downhill. I wouldn't suggest moving any family member there.

"Budget-Friendly Assisted Living with Friendly Staff"
The staff were super friendly and helpful. The food was okay, but my loved one didn’t eat it. They had fun activities and welcomed others to join. We chose this place because it fit our budget.

"Better Care Needed at Oaks Community"
During our loved one's stay at the Oaks community, the caregivers were amazing and took great care of them. However, the management team needs to improve communication with the families of the residents.
