"Mixed Feelings at McKendree Village"

My family member lives at McKendree Village. It's been alright. They still have some issues we're addressing.

"Assisted Living Facility Fails to Refund Money, Ignored Calls"

After seven years and loads of money spent, I tried to get the money that was owed to my mom after she passed. They gave me excuses and false promises that the check was on the way. Then I'm told that I must navigate their bankruptcy process to retrieve the money. I'm extremely angry. They ignored my calls, lied to me about sending the refund, and treated me terribly. I can't believe that they cannot pay their bills considering the number of facilities they own and the high fees they charge. This is poor management. Shaking my head.

"Struggles at Assisted Living Facility"

We heard good things about this place, but our experience has been tough. Our loved one has fallen and lost weight. The Executive Director hasn't been helpful. Communication with family is poor. We didn't even know our loved one was at the hospital. Unfortunately, it's the only Medicare facility nearby. Not recommended.

"Mixed Experience with McKendree Assisted Living; Unique Pet Policy"

The biggest issues we've faced are with fixing stuff in my family member's house and the lawn care being really bad (it's supposed to be included). But, all in all, it's been a good thing. McKendree is also the only place we've seen that lets you live on your own and have pets.

"Not Secure Enough for Mom"

I visited McKendree Village, but it didn't feel as safe as other places we checked out. The elevator access was only controlled by an arm bracelet. We decided on a different community because my mom tends to wander, and I didn't think it was secure enough.

"Horrible Service & Ignorance of Complaints at This Facility"

Seriously, don't let your family member live here! There's not enough staff. Nobody talks to each other. The folks living here barely get any attention. A few of the workers are impolite and have no idea what they're doing! The boss doesn't even care about the problems we bring up!

"Unsatisfactory Cleanliness, Decent Tour Experience"

I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone. It seemed really dirty to me, not the kind of place I'd want my loved one to stay. The tour was okay, though. They told me everything I needed to know.

"Second Choice But Nice: McKendree Village Assisted Living Review"

I visited McKendree Village. It was nice and the tour was good. However, I felt more comfortable at another place we saw, so this was my second choice.

"Great staff and happy residents at McKendree Village"

We chose McKendree Village because the staff was really nice to work with, and I got to meet the activities director and nurses during our tour. The residents also looked really happy. The communication here is great—they call if there's a problem or question and are quick to call back. I would recommend this place to others looking.

"Subpar Assisted Living: Poor Communication, Neglect, Decline in Health"

Placed my mom in rehab there. Communication terrible unless complained. Care mostly awful. Mom lost weight, couldn't sleep, ignored when needing bathroom. Declined a lot. Wounds not cared for properly. No extra food for healing. Compared to another place, huge difference. Mom left last place healing, eating more, walking with help. Now malnourished, can't walk. Feel I failed her. Don't choose this place. I'm a medical pro, 35 years. Not good for healing.

"Terrible Care at Assisted Living Facility Causes Outrage"

The nursing care at this facility is truly disappointing. It's like no one there understands what dementia is, or even cares about the residents. It seems like they're just there to collect a paycheck, nothing more. And what's really upsetting is that the people in charge don't seem to mind what the staff does. Call lights are left unanswered for up to 45 minutes. If a resident is uncomfortable, they just don't worry about it. They won't help unless you ask repeatedly. If a resident with dementia says they're not hungry, they just take it at face value. But anyone who understands dementia knows that "no" sometimes means "yes." They won't help with feeding and they hardly ever offer drinks. When they do, it's in a cheap plastic kiddie cup. The people running the place ought to be ashamed. I hope others will join me in reporting them to higher authorities. I'm already planning to contact News Channel 5, and I'm considering reaching out to the governor too. They don't even employ Registered Nurses, only Licensed Practical Nurses. The employees seem to be people who couldn't keep a job at a decent hospital. I would never recommend putting a loved one there, or even your worst enemy. I wouldn't even take a dog there.

"Unsatisfactory Care at Assisted Living Facility Demands Action"

My family member was at this rehab center - unbelievable! The facility is understaffed, and their knowledge of dementia is basically non-existent. They kept instructing my relative to pull a string for help. Understand that patients with dementia can't grasp this concept. If these patients get hungry or thirsty, they're out of luck. No one will offer them food or drinks. If they're uncomfortable, they're left in the same state. This place needs to be shut down. I'm currently contacting senators, the governor, joint commission and the state health department to close their doors for good. If someone falls or something else happpens, they won't act. The staff are just lazy workers picked up off the street, and there are only LPNs. They pretend to be RNs but they're not. This place deserves to be shut down. Since moving my mom out, my priority is to see to it that this place is closed. This place just isn't up to the standards of a nursing facility!

"Understaffing and Negligence Overshadowing Good Points at McKendree Village"

My, oh my, where do I begin with McKendree Village? Well, let me start with the fact that my mom lives here, but that might not be the case much longer because things have gotten really bad. I've been visiting for several years now, and the Towers dining room seems to be in a real mess. They don't have enough trained servers and they're always short-staffed. More than half the time, the orders are wrong, and the food that is served is cold. It wasn't always this way. These days, we feel lucky if we even get served. But that isn’t the only problem. The marketing team needs a serious talking-to because they're allowing people who need more supervision to live here. There are lots of residents who can’t take care of themselves, and it’s heartbreaking. Even worse, there was a physical altercation between two residents because of lacking medical assistance. There are a few bright spots, though. The maintenance team is pretty swift at responding to calls, the coffee shop, and movie room that my mom adores are kept spotless and well-maintained, and the folks at the front desk are nice. But overall, our experience has been poor and it feels like the management doesn't care enough to make necessary changes.

This facility is now non-profit so you must provide all sources of income plus last 2 years of income tax records! Some of the facilities are in a bad state.

"Questioning 'Homey Feel' and Review Sources at Assisted Living"

About two months ago I went with my mother-in-law to check out this assisted living facility. She was attracted by the number of people she knew there, but I had hoped for more. For me, the rooms looked like they could belong to an old '60s hotel, decidedly lacking any sense of that comfort you'd expect in a homestead. I'm really left questioning whether glowing reviews might be written, predominantly, by 'United Methodist Church' followers.

"Mixed feelings about highrise independent living, but great amenities overall."

It was nice. It had the most stuff compared to the other places we saw this weekend. But I didn't like that the apartments for people who can do things on their own were in a tall building, especially because my husband has trouble moving around.

2/5.00 Published 6 years ago

""Small Apartments and Food Issues at Assisted Living Facility""

The tall building has one and two-story apartments that are too small and need a new look and modern updates. We also visited a two-bedroom cottage that's pretty far to walk to. The lunch they served was skimpy and not good at all. Plus, they wouldn't make any changes to the food.

"Nice place, friendly staff, but chose elsewhere for mom."

We visited McKendree Village, my top pick for my mom's new home. The staff were super nice and answered all our questions. There were lots of cool things for the people who live there. But we ended up picking a different place because it's the one my mom really wanted.

"Nice Community with Kitchen in Need of Update"

My mom and I had a great tour of this place. Everything was good, and everyone was nice. The workers and boss were really good. The tour went very well, but my mom wasn't quite ready to move. The only thing I noticed was the kitchen in the rooms. They need new cabinets and to be updated. Overall, it's a nice place, and I'd tell a friend about it.

"My Visit"

When we visited, this community looked nice. It’s a multi-level place with a pool and rehab services. They also have an exercise room and common areas for socializing. The person who gave us the tour was friendly.

"Great Care for Parents in This Community"

My folks are doing okay in this place. Mom's cared for, dad's alright. I'm happy with everything. Would suggest it.

"Happy Living: My Loved One Thrives in This Community"

This place is really nice. They have lots of things for the people who live here. I feel good about my family member being here. The workers are nice and helpful. There's a doctor's office here, too. People living here can do lots of fun things. The food is really good, and my family member likes it. Eating here feels like going to a restaurant. Everything is going well, and I'd tell others to come here.

"Assisted Living Review: Good Staff, Room for Improvement"

My folks are still getting used to the place. Most staff are pretty good. They help dad with his food needs, but he doesn't enjoy it much. The memory care unit could use more activities. Overall, it's okay.

"Pleasant Community"

I took a nice tour of this community. Everything went well, and I enjoyed it. The staff was friendly, and the community looked nice. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, but it didn't feel like the right fit for me.

"Great care, awful management, and unjust billing practices"

The care and tidiness at the place aren't the problems. It's great, in fact. The issue is the management, which is the worst I've ever seen, and downright mean. In September, I had to move my 92-year-old dad here because he had a fall and was sad and stuck in bed. After being in the place for a bit more than a week, we got told that he would improve slowly because of his old age and the new surroundings. We decided to check back in 3 weeks. But then, about a week and a half after that, they told me they'd stop his Medicare/extra insurance coverage in 2 days! I appealed this with and an independent doctor agreed that my dad couldn't be without care, supporting my complaint. When told McKendree about this on September 25th, the place decided to disregard the doctor's opinion and my appeal and ended my dad's Medicare-covered care, all without telling me. Despite me visiting my dad 3-4 times a week, they've never updated me on his progress. At the end of October, they fully billed me for the month after September 28. This is the most horrific and unfair thing I've had to deal with from a place that's supposed to look out for my elderly father. They don't let me know about his health or how he's doing. Out of all the places my dad has lived in, like independent, assisted, and now long-term care facilities, this place has had the worst communication and most cruel billing strategies. I'm looking for a new place to care for my dad, even though moving him while he's this sick is going to be tough.

"Mom Thrives in Clean, Caring Community"

My mom's happy here. Place stays clean, staff's nice and helpful. Lots of activities. Food's good. Nursing side needs work. Overall, good care.

"Reliable Help System Needed"

My mom's doing okay here, but I have a worry. At night, when she needs help, she has to pull a cord. This system isn't reliable. Sometimes she can't reach the nurse station. That's my main issue with this place. Apart from that, it looks nice. They keep it clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. I pay for extra care for her. I hope they improve the help system.

"Super friendly place, Mom can’t wait to move in!"

Mom and I toured the facility just to gather information. I didn't want to be unprepared about what options were available in the area. We had lunch, toured the whole building (she had been in the rehab unit a few months ago), and then discussed the costs. We were pleasantly surprised—it wasn't as expensive as we thought. We also attended a watermelon social where Mom ran into about 10 people she knew. She had a great time, and the residents were super friendly, excited that someone new might be moving in. A few residents greeted Mom, shared how long they'd been there, and how happy they were. That day, Mom decided this was where she wanted to live. With activities, transportation, access to medical care, and multiple care levels within the facility, we couldn't be happier. She's moving in next week—stay tuned.

I took a really nice tour of this place. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The place looked nice, and everything seemed clean. The staff was welcoming and told us lots of helpful information. They have fun activities and good food. Overall, it was a good tour.

"Highly Recommend This Friendly and Supportive Place"

My mom LOVES this place. It's so friendly and down to earth. The chapel looks like a real church, not just a multi-purpose room. There are lots of outings and fun activities. The staff is very kind and patient. The administrative staff was super helpful, especially Kim, who was very supportive and reassuring.

"Seemed like a nice place!"

I visited this place when we were exploring care options for a family member. The building was neat and tidy, and the staff I met were kind and professional. Although we chose a different community, this could have been a good choice for our loved one.

"Grateful for Great Care at McKendree's Rehab!"

After my surgery, I needed physical therapy. Even though I wanted to go home, I was really grateful for the care I got at McKendree's Rehab. The therapists truly cared about my needs and helped me get back on my feet. I also loved the nurse practitioner—he was so helpful to my family when they were worried about me. I would definitely recommend McKendree's Rehab.

"Assisted Living Visit: Rushed and Impersonal"

The lady who showed me around was nice, but they didn't ask who we were looking for. She had to check her clipboard for her name. The tour felt quick and basic, like a quick glance. The independent living area looked gloomy, like an old New York apartment.

"Clean and comfortable living, with activities and amenities"

This place seems pretty nice. It's an older building, but it looks like they take good care of it. It's not super fancy or anything. They have lots of stuff for people who live on their own. And it didn't smell weird, which is good. The dining room was nice, and they have a chef who cooks all the food. I talked to Kathy Nance, and she gave me a list of room sizes and prices. It's cool that they have a salon for haircuts right there too.

"Experience Dreadful, Especially the Horrible Food!"

The experience here was dreadful, especially the food! It was so unacceptable that I took my family member out during the night. The place was promoted as a rehabilitation center, but it was simply terrible! I couldn't possibly suggest this place to anyone.

"Good Place for Loved Ones"

My family's been here a year, and it's been good. The place is nice, food's tasty, they offer different care options. They take good care of residents.

"Good Care and Communication"

My mother-in-law has been at this place for quite a while, and they really take good care of her. The staff are super friendly and caring, making sure she feels comfortable and safe. Plus, they keep our family informed about any issues that pop up.

4/5.00 Published 11 years ago

"Extremely Friendly and Clean"

This place was expensive, and they didn't want to work with insurance or any other facility because she's on Medicare. They insisted on private pay and avoided anything related to Medicare. However, I was very impressed with how friendly and clean it was. Having been in many assisted living facilities and nursing homes, I know they can sometimes have an unpleasant smell. But this one stood out for its cleanliness.
