"Unsuitable setting, lacking stimulation."

I disliked the small home with shared bathrooms, lacking stimulation.

"Spotless Place, Care Could Improve"

The place is super clean, but they need to make their caring for people better.

"Kitchen Concerns at Avalon House on Gerard Court"

Avalon House on Gerard Court is an old house and not in great shape. The bathroom is a bit scary, and the kitchen looks rundown. When I asked about it, they said, ‘Your mother would never be in the kitchen.’ But the food is still cooked there, which worries me.

"Decent community, but not as good as another option"

This place was decent, but it wasn’t as good as another one we visited.

"Assisted Living Facility Needs More Bathrooms"

The workers are really friendly. The place is tidy, but there are just two bathrooms for eight people.

"Friendly Staff, Clean Place, But Limited Bathrooms"

The workers are really friendly. The place is tidy, but there's only a couple of bathrooms for eight people living there.

"Great care, clean environment, attentive staff, and good value"

The place is doing well. It's very clean, even though the building is older. The food is good, and the staff is really attentive. They go the extra mile to keep the residents busy, which is impressive. I think it's a good value. My only worry was about another resident, but they handled it well with respectful and positive care. In the end, there was nothing to worry about.

"Assisted Living Facility: Clean, Caring, and Attentive"

I believe they're doing a good job. The place is really clean, though it's old. Food's tasty. Staff's nice and pays attention. They work hard to keep residents busy, which is cool. It's worth the cost. Only worry was handled well with personal care and respect. Turns out, no need to worry.

"Cozy, clean, and affordable with friendly, professional staff."

I visited this Avalon House and another one recently with my siblings to find the best place for our mom. The two Avalon houses were the only ones where I felt sure and comfortable they would be a good fit for her. They are cozy and affordable, yet very clean and well-kept. There’s a calm and peaceful atmosphere. During lunch at one of the Avalon houses in McLean, the food was homemade and healthy, and the residents ate together at a family-style table. I also liked the manager who showed me around. She was straightforward but warm and friendly. I didn’t feel like she was trying to sell me anything. A big plus for me was that they are willing to take your loved one on walks around the neighborhood. I recommended an Avalon facility for my mom, but we chose a place in her current town where a brother lives. I suggest checking out Avalon houses if you’re looking in the D.C. area, as they offer something different and are more affordable than many other options.

"Caring, experienced staff with attention to personal requests"

I visited this home and found it clean, well-managed, and nice. However, I decided to place my 91-year-old mother in another Avalon House on High Street. The owner, Georgia Weiss, provides detailed and honest answers to questions and is attentive to special requests. For example, my mom loves the color yellow, so her room was painted that color. The caregivers are caring and professional with lots of experience.

"Outstanding care and staff at Avalon House!"

This home was amazing! There was really nothing they could improve (well, lunch could have been a bit better sometimes, but that's a small thing compared to how great the staff is). They took excellent care of the residents and the facility—everything was clean, neat, and even polished! I visited at all times of the day and night and always found things in order and everyone happy and well-cared for. The staff was loving and experienced, making me feel like it was a family and that my family was a big part of it. I think about them often and feel lucky that our family member was at #1 Avalon House. They are #1 in our eyes.

"Adequate Care, But Not as Impressive as Other Avalon House"

Before, we were really happy with a different Avalon House place we stayed at. So, we picked Avalon House on Gerard Court for another family member, thinking it would be just as great. But it wasn't the same this time. The workers didn't seem to connect with the people living there as much. And it looked like they were mostly taking care of people with Alzheimer's, which didn't fit our needs perfectly. Even though it wasn't what we expected, the care was okay. It wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't as amazing as the care we got from the first Avalon House we tried.

"Decent care, but not as engaging"

Before, we went to a different Avalon House that we loved. So, we picked Avalon House on Gerard Court for another family member hoping it'd be just as good. Sadly, it wasn't as good. The workers didn't interact with the people living there as much. Plus, it seemed like they were mostly focusing on people who have Alzheimer's, which didn't work as well for us. Still, they took alright care of everyone. It wasn't bad at all. It just wasn't as good as the other Avalon House we went to.

"Great care and very supportive staff, highly recommend"

I think they’re doing an excellent job. They have nine houses, and my mom is in one of them. All of the houses are well managed and clean. The staff is very helpful and accommodating, and they take calls at any time. The care is great. They call me often since my mom’s health is getting worse. She still recognizes us kids but not others. The staff always answers my questions and never says they can’t talk. Although she’s now in a smaller home and it’s been tough on her physically, it’s still the best choice for her in terms of finances and everything else.

"Amazing care at half the cost"

Having gone through the retirement home to nursing home process with my grandmother, it was a huge relief to move my mom into a house in a neighborhood with just eight other residents. The care and dedication of the staff are amazing. Plus, it's almost half the cost of the big places.

"Cozy assisted living with minor concerns."

Private rooms, friendly staff, some wear, no vacancies, personalized care.

"Friendly Staff and Personalized Care for $150/Day Assisted Living"

The assisted living place costs $150 a day, or $165 if you want a room with a bathroom. Everything's included in that price. There's only private rooms here, so you don't have to share. There's about 8 people living here at a time. The rooms vary in size, but they all cost the same. I checked out the one in McLean—it's showing its age and is a bit dark. The staff here seems really friendly, though. They have alarms on all the doors, but some of the folks living here have figured out the codes and can wander off. The staff gives baths every day and helps people who have trouble controlling their bladder several times a day. If someone needs special food, they get a nutritionist to help. They weigh people regularly to keep track of their health. There's always someone here, even at night. There's nine properties like this in the McLean and Falls Church area, but there's no open spots right now. It didn't smell weird when I visited, and that's a plus. There's a backyard, but people can only go out with supervision. The staff told me they take some folks on walks around the neighborhood. It seems like a great chance for individualized care.
