"Caring Staff and Decent Food at Commonwealth Assisted Living"

Make sure to visit and talk to residents and staff to understand their happiness at assisted living facilities. Our experience at Commonwealth was positive—the caring staff did their best despite being short-staffed. Food quality was decent, and the nursing staff kept us informed. Unfortunately, we couldn't reach , but the hospice team was helpful.

"Friendly Staff and Tasty Meals at Assisted Living"

The community could be cleaner, but overall, it’s been a good experience. The staff is friendly, and the meals are tasty.

"Staffing and cleanliness concerns; unappetizing food."

They struggle with staff and cleanliness. Food not appealing. Limited options.

"Convenient One-Level Assisted Living Facility Tour"

The person who showed me around was very informative and did a great job answering questions and showing me the whole place. This assisted living facility in Commonwealth has two levels. Unfortunately, the only available room was on the top floor, and since my loved one had just had hip surgery, we were hoping for a place that was all on one level.

"Caring Staff, Recommend for Families"

The staff sometimes could be quicker in responding, but they truly care about all the residents. We've had a good experience with CommonWealth Senior Living and would suggest it to other families.

"Convenient Choice Near Home"

We visited Commonwealth and liked it a lot. Everyone was super friendly, and it’s a new place. It had everything we wanted, but we picked the other Commonwealth because it’s closer to our house.

"Mixed Feelings on Assisted Living Space"

I wasn’t too happy with my visit. It’s great that the Director knows a lot and the monthly price is good. You get everything in that cost, like laundry, without extra charges or fees at the start! But, the place is pretty old and they’re fixing it up. The living room and eating area are tiny and not well-decorated. The floors where everyone walks were not clean! All in all, it didn’t really wow me.

"Assisted Living Gem in VA Keeps Mom Safe and Happy"

Three years ago, I started searching for a place for my mom, Candy Leary, after my dad passed away in Lancaster County, PA. It was clear she couldn't live alone. I looked into assisted living near Blacksburg/Christiansburg, VA to keep her close. CAL came highly recommended. When we visited, I was really impressed. The staff were so caring, and I knew it was the right place for Mom to live happily and safely. Since then, CAL has only gotten better. The facility is beautiful, with recent upgrades that make it even more appealing. There are lots of activities she loves. Personally, I feel at ease knowing she's well cared for when I'm away. We're grateful to have CAL in our community and couldn't be happier with the excellent service they provide. Well done!

"Neglected and Overcharged: A Family Struggles with Assisted Living Center"

My mom's been living at this assisted center for over a year now. At first, she could do a lot on her own, but she's gotten to the point where she needs a lot of help, even with simple things like getting to meals or activities. I've had to ring-up Adult Protective Services three times in the last six months. Each call was serious. Once, they even had to swing by to snap some photos of her bruised and swollen arm caused by a fall which the staff claimed she totally fine after. Just recently, after another fall where she hit her head, nobody from the staff even cared to come check on her through the night. In another instance, a resident was yelling for help and I found her on the floor. The center's staff said they already knew she was there and that they'd 'get to her'! It's just really messed up. Another time, I came by on a Saturday night to give mom a shower. She'd been unwashed for days. They kept saying they were too busy or that there wasn't enough staff. One staff member even confessed she'd 'Never given a bath'. And the food's no good either. My mom's had to choke down the same soup for two meals straight, or just PB&J sandwiches. One night, while I was there helping her get ready for bed, there was no hot or even warm water. She told me someone else had complained about it during the day too. When I brought this up with the staff at 9:15 pm, they acted all clueless about it. I couldn't believe it! I work in healthcare and this really gets to me. What about hygiene and handwashing? When I reached out to the Health Department, I didn't get a peep from them. The next day, on my way to work at 7:30 am, the hot water issue hadn't been resolved. I live just a couple miles from the center so I show up most nights. I've seen this kind of neglect time time again. I worry about other folks here who don't have folks living close-by who can drop in or keep an eye on them. I've even tried ringing up the big bosses a few times and have gotten almost nothing in response. For all the trouble, they're billing my mom and lots of other folks around $4,400 a month.

"A Pleasant Assisted Living Option"

This place was really nice—maybe even a bit better maintained than English Meadows. If it were up to me, I'd probably choose this one. They made sure residents stayed connected with others, had TV rooms, and organized activities a couple of times a week. While I don't think they offered more activities than English Meadows, this place felt newer and the staff were super helpful. The lady who gave me the tour was really nice.

"Assisted living facility falls short on staff and meal care."

Until recently, I might've rated them a 4, but now it's more like a 2. My mom missed three meals because the staff didn't fetch her. She fell about a month ago; it wasn't their fault, but she got hurt. They're very short-staffed. When I reached them at 7:30 PM, they said they were feeding her supper, but all she got was a peanut butter and banana sandwich. I was disappointed. The place seemed clean, which is why we chose it initially. But there's been a lot of staff turnover. Only one person remains from when we moved mom in four months ago. It's definitely different now. If Wheatland can get more staff and control things better, I'd rate them higher, but not today.
