Sunrise at George Mason

"Friendly staff, convenient location, good communication."
We chose Sunrise at George Mason because it was close to my house, so we could visit often. The staff was very friendly, and people I talked to gave it high marks. They were always available, and if not, my voicemails were returned promptly. I got weekly phone calls from my move-in coordinator with updates. It was hard for my dad because the COVID lockdown started right after he moved in, so it wasn't the best experience for him. Overall, I would recommend it for assisted living/memory care.

"Personalized care, friendly staff, and engaging activities—very pleased!"
Sunrise at George Mason is an excellent community with personalized care in a warm and friendly setting. We visited several places recommended by A Place for Mom before choosing this one, and we’ve been very happy with our decision. The caring and knowledgeable staff made our 93-year-old mother's move from the Midwest smooth. They greet our mother and visitors by name, and care managers make sure residents feel included in activities. Family members are also encouraged to join in care plans and family-centered events. We’ve been impressed with the delicious, healthy meals, the cleanliness of the facility, and the variety of activities. The administrator is easy to reach and quick to address any concerns. The staff ensures residents are comfortable and their needs are met promptly. We’ve been very pleased!

"Communication and Service Concerns"
Sunrise at George Mason is a small place with around 50 people. It's all on one floor, which is handy. But, there are some problems. The cleaning and laundry service we were supposed to get every week didn't happen for three weeks, until we mentioned it. Also, the staff don't always talk well with the residents. Some are nice, while others are not so nice. For instance, some people get to choose their food in the dining room, but others don't. My mom had a bad experience when she talked about this with a friend, and a staff member got mad at her for bringing it up.

"Steer Clear: Understaffed with Poor Hygiene"
Don't let your family member reside here. They're always understaffed, particularly in the Alzheimer's unit. People there get bed sores and wear unclean clothes.

"Comforting Care Community"
Sunrise at George Mason is a super clean and friendly place. My father-in-law gets special care there and the staff are really nice and pay attention. We know he's safe and happy there. They have fun stuff for residents to do if they can. Dad loved the food. The staff make sure he's comfy. That's why we picked Sunrise at George Mason. I like that the boss is friendly and knows a lot, and they listen when we're worried. They always make us feel welcome when we visit.

"Average facility lacking desired amenities, cleanliness satisfactory."
This place is old but tidy. The cafeteria wasn't great like the one we picked. There wasn't an open space we fancied. Overall, we didn't find it appealing.

"Mixed feelings about Sunrise: caring staff, but supply and activity issues."
Since my mom moved into Sunrise, there have been some problems. Most of the time, the staff are nice, but sometimes they forget to put the things she needs in her room. The food is alright, but we're looking forward to the new food service, hoping it'll get better. They have activities every day, but sometimes they take her to the wrong place or cancel them without telling us.

"Friendly Staff, Cozy Space, Good for Mom"
Sunrise at George Mason is pretty cozy because it’s small and everything’s on one floor. That can be good in some ways. It’s also right next to the Commonwealth Rehab and Nursing Center—you just walk down the hallway to get there. The person who helps you join, the admissions director, is awesome. Everyone working there seems really nice and like they want to help—they care about the people living there a lot. The place for people with memory issues is really good, with people who pay a lot of attention to those who need it. I think my mom would like it there. But the rooms where people get help with daily stuff are kind of tiny, and the places where everyone hangs out feel too packed for my dad to be okay with.

"Best Assisted Living Choice for Comfort and Care"
My elderly father has lived in three assisted living places over the past four years (one was out of state). He ranks them as Good, Better, Best. He’s been at Sunrise at George Mason for about two weeks now. Since he uses a wheelchair, he really likes that this place is small, all on one level with no elevators, and easy to get around. He appreciates getting to know people easily, enjoying the tasty home-cooked meals, and the caring, friendly staff. He also loves the beautiful garden that's easy to reach, the fun activities, flexible meal times, and the help he gets without feeling like a burden. Even though his room is the smallest he's had, it fits his needs and feels like home to him and us, his family. The staff has been incredibly attentive and helpful.

"Feels Like Home with Outstanding Staff and Great Amenities"
My elderly father has lived in three assisted living places over the past four years, including one in another state. He ranks them as Good, Better, and Best. After being at Sunrise at George Mason for about two weeks, he’s impressed. He likes the smaller size, single level with no elevators, short distances to travel, and the easy access to people. He enjoys the home-cooked food, attentive and friendly staff, the lovely garden, all the activities, flexible meal times, and the physical help without feeling like a bother. Even though his room is the smallest he’s had, it suits his needs and feels like home to him and our family. The staff has been outstanding so far.

"Overcrowded Facility with High Costs and Subpar Care"
Our mom lived in the memory area. It was too packed with way too many people for the number of workers they had. There were always wheelchairs in the way and the TV was too loud all the time. The cost was high. The rooms cost more than those on the assisted living side. They even made us pay extra for each service. We had to tell them about burnt out light bulbs in mom's room and other problems. The workers were nice, some were really good, but most were just alright. There seemed to be no organized process: they kept forgetting to put in her hearing aids (one was broken by a worker), wash her hair, or give her enough showers unless we paid more. The fees raised at the beginning of the new year, but as far as we know, the workers didn't get a pay raise. We were glad when we were able to move our mom somewhere else.

"Care facility crowded, disorganized, overpriced and underdelivering"
Our mom was in the memory care part of this facility. It was way too packed with people for the amount of workers they had, there were always wheelchairs blocking the way, and the TV was on full blast all the time. The cost was really high: the rooms cost more than the ones in the assisted living part for no clear reason, and we had to pay for every single service separately. We even had to tell them about stuff like burned light bulbs in her room that needed to be fixed. The workers were pretty friendly and some were really great, but most were just alright. The care seemed really random: they kept forgetting to put in her hearing aids, which one of the staff broke, and to wash her hair when she got a shower. They also didn't give her enough showers unless we paid extra. Prices got higher at the start of the year, but we don't think the workers got raises. We're glad we moved our mom out.

"Sunrise at George Mason: A Wonderful Place to Live"
Sunrise at George Mason is a really nice place with assisted living and Memory Care. It's small, with only about 70 residents. The activities director, Lynette, is amazing. She plans fun things for the seniors, like lunch out once a week, parties for every holiday, musical programs, and nightly Bingo. There are also religious services for Protestants and Catholics. The home has a resident dog, which makes my mom happy because she loves animals and had dogs for many years. One thing I don't like is how hard it is to have a meal with my mom. I have to sit at her regular table and take the spot of one of her friends, which sometimes causes hurt feelings. I wish there was a special table for seniors with visitors. But this is a small issue.

"Affordable assisted living facility with comprehensive amenities but varying costs."
This place costs a lot. The room alone is like $4,950 a month. Then they charge more for care and stuff. So, it could be anywhere from $6,780 to $8,460 a month.

"Expensive Assisted Living Costs"
This assisted living facility has some pricey options. Let's break it down: 1. Room Costs: - The basic room, which includes housekeeping, laundry, meals, and activities, costs between $123 and $153 per day. - If you want a private room, it adds up to $4,950 per month. 2. Care Expenses: - The cost for care varies. It can be anywhere from $47 to $92 per day. - That means $1,410 to $2,760 per month. 3. Additional Services: - There are extra services available, like transportation or special treatments. These cost $14 to $25 per day. - So, at the lowest, a private room would be $6,780 per month. - At the highest, it would be $8,460 per month. - Most likely, it falls somewhere in between. Overall, this place isn't cheap! 😬

"Mixed Feelings About Sunrise Assisted Living"
Sunrise Assisted Living is really nice and big! However, we think we might be paying for more than she'll actually use. She's not very into activities, so some of what Sunrise offers might not be relevant for her.

"Mixed Feelings: Nice Facility but May Offer Too Much"
It's really nice and big, but we're unsure if we're paying for stuff she won't use. She's not into activities, so a bunch of what Sunrise has might not be useful for her.
