The Gardens of Virginia Beach

"Mixed Experience at the Gardens Assisted Living"
Most of the staff are friendly. However, my wife, who has Alzheimer's, refuses their assistance. They don't encourage her enough to shower and change clothes regularly. Without my questions or concerns, there's no feedback on her well-being. Housekeeping isn't great, but the meals are acceptable. If a resident needs individual attention, I wouldn't recommend the Gardens. Progress updates for residents are lacking.

My loved one lives at The Gardens of Virginia Beach and things have been really good overall. I would probably tell others about this place, but it's a bit expensive.

"Great care, clean facility, helpful staff, easy transition."
They've been really good, and loves living there. We did have some issues with automatic payments each month. The facility is always very clean, and they recently updated the inside. made enrollment easy and has been super helpful. Plus, enjoys the food. They got involved from the start, making the transition easier.

"Mixed Experience at Assisted Living Facility"
The place is clean, bright, and the lights are good. The staff is usually nice and helpful. I really like the app they use for activities and updates. It shows what's happening each day and what my family member has done. But I wish they'd share pictures of my loved one participating. Also, I'd prefer to talk to the nurse on duty when I call, not the assistant nurse director who might not know my loved one.

"Friendly Staff, Great Place, Needs Better Food"
The staff at The Gardens of Virginia Beach are super friendly and try hard to get to know everyone who lives there. The food could be better. It would be nice to have more fresh fruits and vegetables, especially seasonal ones. Overall, I would tell others to check out The Gardens of Virginia Beach.

"“Staffing Woes Impact Assisted Living Facility”"
My family member lived here, and the staff shortage caused problems. The top managers even worked in the kitchen because they didn’t have enough people. They ran out of food sometimes. The place was clean, and the existing staff were friendly. We picked this facility because it was new, affordable, and promised everything we wanted. But they didn’t deliver. They tried to do things right, but the staffing situation was a mess. I’d give them a 2 until they fix it. Once they do, my rating might go up to a 4 or 5.

"Bright and spacious wins over dark and cramped."
We visited The Gardens of Virginia Beach, but it felt dark. We chose [community name removed], with its big, airy halls.

"Praise for The Gardens of Virginia Beach's Family-Friendly Environment"
I really like The Gardens of Virginia Beach. The sales director is great. She's clear about prices and manages well. They plan lots of daily activities for residents. We get event emails, so there's always something going on. They're good at involving us, the family. It's been perfect for my dad; he feels at home here. The staff are friendly. I would recommend The Gardens to others.

"Assisted Living Review: Improving but Still Has Room to Grow"
This place has really nice staff. They got a new boss who's trying super hard to make things better, especially the food. They listen if you're worried about something and try to fix it. Overall, they're pretty good, but there's still stuff they can do better, and they're working on it.

"Residents Enjoy Clean, Active Living Environment"
The place has been kept clean. The things to do are really good, but it's the residents who decide whether to join in or not. Overall, everything's been pretty good up to now.

"Mixed Experience at Assisted Living Community"
My parent hasn't enjoyed their time at this community. The staff are mostly friendly, but there's a lot of confusion among them. Many staff members come from agencies, and we're unhappy with their work. They're trying to help, but the issues persist. My mom can be difficult, and she's had to wait up to 45 minutes for help when she calls.

"Warmth Overwhelming, Assurance of Meds and Care Underwhelming"
Just three days back, I concluded a one-month stay after respite care. The facility itself felt homey with large windows in each room providing lots of natural light. The staff there were sincerely warm. However, I wouldn't suggest placing a loved one here for respite care until a few spot checks indicate that things have improved under the new Nursing Director, especially if your dear ones rely on medication. Also, if there’s no one constantly available to advocate for your loved one, you should think twice before opting for this facility. When we arrived about a month ago, the place was going through a critical staff shortage, resulting in a lot of confusion and poor communication between staff members, as well as with residents and families. Unluckily, even after we spent 6 hours each day to ensure everything was smooth, it took nearly two weeks to arrange my father’s first scheduled bath. His awakening time fluctuated between early and late mornings. The newly appointed Nursing Director is progressively putting things in order, with the bathing schedule being among the improved aspects. However, medication issues persisted throughout our stay. On four occasions, his medications ran out. Three times this happened even before attempts at refill, while the fourth time, the medication dispensing got suspended. In his final days, the outbreaks of improper dosing and missing medication happened too frequently. Dad's special diet was overlooked often, and wrong liquids were used to dispense his medications. During his stay, Dad struggled with congestive heart failure and pneumonia. He choked on his medicines several times as they were given all at once. We had to push the staff to get the medications, he needed to manage his conditions. Apart from this, we had to request all the diagnostics and assist the staff in the treatment of his health issues as they seemed ill-equipped to handle it themselves. By the time he was discharged, Dad had congestive heart failure and pneumonia, which was unexpected as his health remained stable despite his prior health complications. But since returning home, his health has shown considerable improvement. There was a multitude of errors in the discharge note, which created confusion among the home care nurses and therapists. Although we selected in-house therapy at the Gardens, I can't recommend it due to its unpredictability and slowness in getting started. The in-house therapists, however, were genuinely kind and caring. The Nursing Director is accountable and is bringing about much-needed changes. I urge you to investigate thoroughly. Speak to residents and their families to know more about their experiences. It's a lovely place if your loved one's health is stable and doesn't depend on medicines, and they desire a warm and caring atmosphere.

"Enjoyable Staff"
I visited this place recently, and I don't have any complaints. The staff did an excellent job showing me around and answering my questions thoroughly. The floor plan was easy to follow. Although it wasn't the right fit for my loved one, I would still recommend it.

"Plenty of Amenities and Support at The Gardens"
The Gardens is a beautiful place. The staff and Directors are very friendly and always ready to help make new residents feel welcome. There are many activities to keep residents busy and social, but it's up to each person to join in. I was surprised to learn that PT/OT services are available right on site. There's even an exercise facility for PT, which is important for my father. The dining room is open all day, so residents can eat whenever they want. That's a big plus! They provide weekly housekeeping and laundry, plus daily bed-making and emptying of wastebasket. Managing my father's medicine was also a big help, especially with all the things to consider for his new heart condition.

"Outstanding, thoughtful care"
My Aunt has received amazing care since she moved in. When she was recently hospitalized, the director took time from his busy day to visit her, which meant a lot to me. I really appreciated that.

"Mixed Feelings About The Gardens Assisted Living"
They used to be known for not being good. We spoke to a few folks who had their family members living at The Gardens, but they had to find a new place for them. When I mentioned this to the staff, they said they have new people in charge, but you never know if that will really change things. The tour was good and the staff acted professionally, but we still felt uncertain.

"Mixed feelings about assisted living facility"
This place ranks fifth for me. It felt cluttered inside. I appreciated the dining options. The cost for lodging was fair, but the fees for care and medicine management were high. Despite this, the overall expenses were lower than what my mom is currently paying.

"Great staff and community feel, but missing memory unit and furniture."
All the staff were awesome. It really feels like a community here. I do wish they had a memory unit and a secure facility for patients with memory issues. I also love that pets are allowed and the shadow boxes outside the rooms. My only wish is that they included furniture since Dad has very few items.

"Perhaps an Adequate Choice for Assisted Living"
The assisted living place is okay, I guess. It’s not the worst, but it’s not the best either. The staff are pretty nice, and they do their jobs alright. The rooms are clean enough, but they could use a bit more space. The food’s decent, but it gets boring after a while because it’s the same stuff. They have activities, but they’re not always super fun. So, it’s like, maybe it’s good for some people, but maybe not for everyone.
