"Chose Another Community for Better Fit and Familiar Faces"
We visited Sunrise of Mercer Island and thought it was pretty good. We picked a different place because it was better in every way. Plus, our loved one knew someone there, which made it easier.

"Urgent Nursing Staff Overhaul Needed"
The place looks good and the building is nice, but they really need to change their nursing team. Our mom or dad almost got super sick with sepsis, which can kill you fast, because they didn’t catch a UTI in time. Seriously, the signs of a UTI are obvious, or at least they’re supposed to be. Now there are better places to choose from on Mercer. We’ve taken our mom or dad out of that place.

"Small Rooms, No Closets"
Certainly! Here’s the revised review in simpler language: “The memory care rooms were tiny, with no closet space.” And here’s the summary:

"Safety Concerns at Sunrise After Resident Assault Incident"
This facility first appeared like a pleasant place with caring staff. However, I recently learned about a troubling incident at Sunrise that raised grave concerns about safety. A friend of mine, who's been a resident for a few months, was assaulted by another resident. My friend, who uses a wheelchair, couldn't protect himself. Despite this, the perpetrator continues to reside there while my friend is forced to move out. Given these events, I'm highly disappointed and I would suggest steering clear of this facility.

"Top choice with great care, but small studio size"
This place is my top choice so far. It’s great because of the size, the way it transitions from assisted living to memory care, and the personal caregiver attention. It feels more like home. The only downside is that the studio available is very small.

"Sunrise Healthcare: Substandard Care and Prescription Mishandling"
We're sharing our experience so others seeking assisted living for their parents can make informed choices. We feel this place isn't what it used to be. Our parent went from a vibrant, active individual to someone who couldn't hold their head up or walk - in mere weeks. This, unfortunately, was absolutely avoidable. We found that Sunrise Mercer Island had been improperly administering extended release beta blockers - crushed, twice a day, for more than a month. Despite CLEAR instructions on the medication to NOT crush it. This incorrect administration floods the body with the drug all at once instead of dispersing it over 12 hours. We believe this improper handling of the medication heavily links to our parent's swift decline. Despite acknowledging their mistake, the new executive director proceeded to inform us of a hike in the cost of care for our parent. Another instance of this facility's decline came when we noticed our parent was significantly heavier and could barely speak during a visit. Voicing our concerns to the nursing staff led to them dispassionately stating “It's in God's hands, we can't know when it's their time”. On persisting, the nursing staff just brushed it off saying our parent seemed fine that morning. Unsatisfied with their response, we consulted our parent's doctor, who immediately diagnosed a UTI. The doctor warned that if left untreated, the UTI could've evolved into sepsis, which is often quickly fatal. Our attempt to confront the Sunrise nursing staff with this was met with an indifferent "oh another one". We suspect that the UTI resulted from the caregivers not providing our parent with a shower for over 2 weeks, which we were completely unaware of. This directly contradicts the assurances given to us that showers would be provided twice a week and that we would be informed if a resident refused to take one. We believe these situations are intolerable and others should be informed about the poor quality of care at Sunrise Mercer Island. These are just our experiences and our opinions - reviewed February 2018.

"Nice facility, but not ideal for our care needs"
We had a nice tour and were deciding between this place and another. It's a big facility with lots of space. She would have had a small apartment, and it felt more like community living. We wanted more care, so we didn’t think it was the best fit for us. I would definitely recommend it to family and friends.

Title: A Disappointing Assisted Living Facility This place is a total mess right now. My mom has been living here for over 4 years, and things have only gotten worse each year. Plus, the cost keeps going up faster than inflation! The building looks nice, kind of like a hotel. The food is good, and they pay attention to little details like decorations. But here's the real problem: when it comes to taking care of seniors with dementia, they're failing big time. They say they have enough staff, and the staff-to-resident ratio seems good. But what they don't tell you is that in the memory care area, caregivers end up doing tasks like kitchen and laundry work that should be handled by non-caregiver staff. That means less time for actual care. Why the extra duties? Well, the memory care area is tucked away on the third floor, and it's like a fortress up there. There's only one slow elevator, and management rarely bothers to visit. The executive director has an office on the first floor, but she hardly ever comes up to check on things. Instead, she fusses over flowers and decorations that the residents don't even notice. The caregivers operate without much supervision. There's no real coaching or hands-on training from the more experienced staff. And after dinner, I often find the living room full of residents while the staff play on their smartphones, ignoring everyone. It's frustrating!

"Terrible Care and Ignore Medical Order in this Place"
Right now, this place is just awful. My mom has been living here for over 4 years, and each year, it just keeps getting worse. On top of that, they ask for more and more money each year. This place looks nice on the outside, like a fancy hotel. The food is good and it looks clean. But the part that matters, the actual care for seniors, is terrible, especially for those with dementia. They have enough workers, but they don't use them right. The caregivers are stuck doing chores like dishes and laundry that other workers should be doing, taking away from their time with the residents. The big boss of the place mostly stays on the first floor and hardly ever checks on the top floor where my mom is. When she does, she just looks at the flowers and decorations, not at the actual residents. The caregivers don't get bossed around or trained. When I tell them how to take care of my mom, I have to repeat myself to every single one. Even when I'm there, I've seen all the workers just looking at their phones, ignoring the seniors. And they don't check on the seniors like they're supposed to. When disgusting smells start, they just open the windows, even when it's super cold. I had to teach the workers how to do basic stuff, like how to sit my mom down without messing up her posture, or how to change her diaper. I even had to teach them how to clean properly, which is something even a babysitter would know. But it gets even worse. The place doesn't listen to me when I tell them what to do medically for my mom. My mom has seizures and I don't want her to go to the hospital for it. But they keep calling paramedics and not letting me talk to them. I've even shown them a video of one of her seizures and explained it all to their nurses, but they still don't get it. I had to fight with them about medicines, too. They wanted to give her one I told them not to, and they took her off one without asking me. The nurses have been nothing but trouble. It took 7 weeks to get my mom a wheelchair, only because the nurses took forever and never did anything fast. There were even bedbugs on my mom's floor last summer, and they didn't tell anyone until the bites on my mom were obvious and they had to get rid of them. And last summer, another resident fell and the workers left her there for a long time. I helped her, but when I had to leave, they left her again. When I complained to the big bosses, they had a secret meeting with me and started blaming me for causing trouble. I bet the same thing will happen after I write this, but hopefully this will keep another family from dealing with all this trouble and get this place to fix its problems.

"Management Lacking Knowledge In Assisted Living Facility"
The assistants here are excellent, making me feel valued and included. But, I had an uncomfortable situation with a management staff member who couldn't answer my questions. Even though she was responsible for overseeing care, she didn't seem to know much about it. So disappointed!

"Mixed feelings about costs but great care; choose carefully."
The people working here are really nice! They're taking good care of my mom, and that makes me really happy. But I don't think everything should cost extra on top of the already expensive room. Like, why are we paying for cable separately? It seems kind of silly to me. And the cost keeps changing depending on how much help your parent needs, plus there's a daily fee for meds. It's all included in the monthly bill, but it could go up unless your parent needs less help. Sunrise is a friendly, loving, clean, and caring place. You definitely get what you pay for here, and the staff spend time with the residents, which is great. I checked out a bunch of places before choosing this one, and my mom's happy here, so I am too. Make sure to pick a place carefully though.

"Pricey, yet loving and attentive staff; choose carefully."
The people who work here are really nice! They take really good care of my mom, and I'm super happy about that. But, I don't think everything that's included in the room cost is fair because it's super expensive. You have to pay for cable separately, which seems kind of silly to me. They should just include it in the price. Also, the cost changes depending on how much help your parent needs, and there's a fee for their medicine every day. It's all added up in the monthly bill, but it might go up if your parent needs more help. Sunrise is a friendly, clean, and caring place. You definitely get what you pay for, and the staff spends time with the residents, which is great. I looked at a bunch of places before choosing this one. My mom is happy here, and so am I. Just make sure to pick a place that's right for you.

"A bit pricey but great atmosphere and all-inclusive fee"
It's a little expensive at over $6000 a month. But, everything is included in that cost, and I really liked the atmosphere of the place.
